PRODUCT REVIEW: Nintendo's New Game Boy Micro a Missed Opportunity

DALLAS (AP) -- Nintendo Co.'s new Game Boy Micro handheld could have been so much more than a tiny hunk of plastic that plays video games. Less than a year after the innovative Nintendo DS arrived with dual screens, a microphone and wireless multiplayer capability, the company is set to release the diminutive Micro on Sept. 19.

But I'm still searching for a compelling reason to spend $99 on this machine, the smallest portable gaming system I've ever used, when Nintendo itself already offers better products for not much more money.

Is it for tech-savvy fashionistas who can't afford Sony Corp.'s sleek but pricey PlayStation Portable? Collectors who insist on owning every flavor of Game Boy ever made?

Perhaps grown-ups who think they'll somehow look more professional playing "Astro Boy" on a Micro?

Well, that last one is at least plausible. But if you wanted to really grab that market, why not integrate cell phone functionality, wireless connectivity for multiplayer gaming or even a digital audio player?

As it stands, the Micro is nothing more than a redesigned Game Boy Advance SP reduced to a palm-sized rectangle akin in dimensions to a candybar cell phone.

The Nintendo faithful already have a pretty small system in the Game Boy Advance SP -- and it costs $20 less. Likewise, for $50 more than a Micro, you can buy a snazzy DS and play new interactive games exclusively for that system, as well as Game Boy Advance games.

That said, the Micro includes several improvements over the aging Game Boy Advance SP (which itself is a retooled, enhanced version of the plain-old Game Boy Advance). Instead of a flip-open, side-lit 32,000 color liquid crystal display, the Micro uses a backlit screen that's much brighter and sharper. But at only 2 inches diagonal, the flat screen strained my eyes.

At 2.8 ounces, the Micro has almost half the heft of the square-shaped Game Boy Advance SP. It measures just four inches long and under an inch thick.

One thing that has long bugged me about my SP is that you have to buy a separate adapter to use headphones. The Micro remedies that annoyance with a standard headphone jack included.

As with the SP, battery life is excellent on the Micro, with about 10 hours between charges. And the Micro uses the same 32-bit processor and can play the hundreds of games in the Game Boy Advance library.

But it isn't compatible with new DS titles.

On the fashion front, the Micro comes with swappable faceplates available in camouflage and other patterns. And though it felt a bit cramped in my hands, I prefer it to my SP because its tiny size makes it incredibly easy to take with me.

Still, I can't get rid of the nagging feeling that the puny Micro is a giant missed opportunity.

If he thought the price was stupid then how much more stupid would he think it was if he got the price difference between the GBM and DS correct? :P

The author can't seem to figure out who the Micro is geared towards so he decides to go with current GBA(SP)/DS owners. Interesting.

Still, complaints about the price are well-founded IMO. It should have been at least $20 cheaper. I'll probably end up buying one nonetheless.

It is too expensive...but it is also clearly marketed towards those who don't own existing Nintendo handhelds and don't particularly want to. Whether or not there is a market for this, only time will tell.

Play yan should have been built in.
I 100% agree with this statement, in theory, but I'm sure Nintendo thinks that less than 10% of the buyers will want that so it's not worth the price hike just to please a few punters.

Its Ninendo's PSP. Too expensive for the riff-raff. Only for trendy must havzors. Price drops will eventually make it popular.

I wouldn't go that far. At least with the PSP it's hardware backs it's price but for Micro I just can't see it justified when there are other alternatives for the cheaper SP and the more powerful DS which is only $30 more.

I have one, and let me summarize:

It isn't THAT much smaller than a folded SP.

It's significantly more expensive.

The smaller size fucks both legibility AND control ergonomics.

It's THICK.

Micro is trendy? Hell yeah I'ma go pull me mad hoes... But yeah the thing is so damn oevr priced yet I'm still buying one. But I'm clearly the target market. I have no gba/ds, and man I can so sneak the micro in at work or school. SOLD

The only great thing about the Micro is that is is truly portable..

The DS and PSP dont really want to fit in my pocket, even the orignal GBA did not want to and the SP is just borderline!

I'll be buying a micro and a DS.

The headphone jack, great portability, bright backlit screen, and faceplates are worth the extra $ for me. I've never owned a GBA so I don't really care that the screen is smaller =)

Eventually I'll buy a DS and I think the machines actually complement each other. The DS is great for long trips, multiplayer with friends, etc.. while the micro seems to suit itself well for quick, covert play sessions at work or waiting in lines. With play yan it will become even more useful.

(I never owned a GBA)

This is the first Nintendo hardware I won't be buying at launch.

It's not that I'm cheap, it's just that...okay well yeah, I'm cheap.

The micro is, in all honesty, a brilliant product move.

At an MSRP of $39.95.

Third-pillar nonesense aside, I suspect people are for the moment coming to see the DS as Nintendo's new portable scene, period. It's the new Gameboy for this year - the fact that it plays GBA games just helps that perception. The SP may still be a very nice and attractive system (one of the best designs ever, IMHO), but it is becoming old in perception as well as fact. This is where you begin stretching out sales with gimmick products, like... PSOne. Or the GBA Micro.

Problem is, this price point makes no sense and works against the niche the Micro would fit into naturally. If the thing was dirt cheap, I bet a ton 'o people would snatch 'em up - mega-droves. A true pocket gameboy, pop in your one fav GBA game and have it on-hand everywhere.

I mean come on. At this point the GBA, even squished down further, cannot be costing Nintendo much to make.

I'm going to avoid the issue about whther the micro is worth $100 or not, but in developing a product, there is much more to it than what it costs to manufacture. There are designers to pay. ADvertising and marketing. And as a business any new (or old redesigned product) is out to make money - the micro is one of these - if they just wanted to increase marketshare to make profit off games, they just drop teh price of the older models (and Nintendo have done that). And because they're out to make money, profit must be made from the years od research and design that went into the Advance. Given, Nintendo are probably well into their profit-era, but the micro simply represents more profit. If it sells. I don't think nintendo are out to increase Gameboy market with the micro, but instead, are just trying to sell a new (old) piece of hardware in a new design. To make profit.

The screen is too small. Reminds me of the turbo express, you can't play the games, as there are so many elements that were designed specifically for a bigger screen. It's an eye strain to play. Class action?

GB Micro has a market but it's really aimed more at the portable minded gamer and the chic minded gamer who wears electronics more as a fashion statement. Gamers who don't actually commute and buy portables as part of their gaming hobby probably won't find much use out of it other than just to collect and to have the latest toy. I really like the fact that micro is the kind of portable I can fit anywhere.

Commuters will understand this, but when you're running to catch a train with an umbrella, a heavy coat and a bag, last thing I want to worry about is my fragile portable. I'd really like to be able to throw it into a pocket with my earbuds in place and pick up where I left off when I get seated again. I doubt most PSP or DS owners can even do that. GBASP owners might, if they wear baggy pants with big pockets but probably not with shirt pockets or jean pockets.

that said, what is really hurting the micro right now is that NOA is so ham fisted about bringing Play-Yan stateside. Micro + Play-yan = winner. Even if play-yan sales stateside is modest, that's one market Nintendo won't be reaching this year with the micro.

I don't know about him, but I bought a Virtual Boy at launch. :(

The system and the box are in mint condition, however, the damn screens are out of alignment, making it virtually (haha) unplayable. Well, more unplayable than normal.

And I won't be buying a Micro at launch. $100 is regoddamndiculous.

Good to see a pig being called a pig.

Nintendo could have had a hit on their hands, or at least a nice second wind to GBA sales in the wake of the NintenD00DS and PSP; but it's Nintendo. Money! Money! Money!

You're not going to charge me $100 for some sorry ass outdated hardware. No way. No how.

I suspect the Micro could be the second coming of the Virtual Boy. I anticipate rapid price drops. :X

Let me own your Virtual Boy story with this true story.

Remember when it was announced? It was literally a few days before it was debuted at Spaceworld. The doors opened. I ran up to the kiosk, because I was young and I hadn't been WTF'd yet by Nintendo.

I stuck my face in the foam googles and looked inside for about three seconds. Then I turned to a colleague and I said, "Oh my fucking god it is totally teh* utter shit."

Two Japanese fellows (and a small crew of lackeys) discussed what I'd just said, including a translation.

One of them was Yamauchi.

* First ever use of "teh."

If the most stressful part of your day is "Oh man, oh man, oh MAN! Which Game Boy do I buy? There are just too many to choose from?! DAMN YOU NINTENDO," then there are a lot of people who envy you.
