Revolution to download DS demos

Fuzzy

I would bang a hot farmer!
I didn't see this posted.
In yet another confirmation that Nintendo's first-party back catalogue will not be available to download for free on the Revolution, Mr. Iwata also confirmed that Revolution users will be able to download demos for the Nintendo DS to the console and then transfer them wirelessly to their handhelds. We look forward to hearing more on this service next month when Mr. Iwata announced that Nintendo will reveal more information on their Wi-Fi connection to be used in games for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Revolution.

very cool. it would even more cool if it was possible to download full NES or SNES games to the DS. The DS is certainly capable of running them and the screen resolution between all three systems is essentially the same.

From where though? It doesn't have a web browser. The DS can't search the internet for downloads. There has to be a nearby "broadcasting station" for the DS' operating system search software to locate and download from. The Revolution will be this broadcasting station.

This would also be nice.

It would be nice if you could play the games on an ultra-high res emulator. Use the remote to point at the simulated touch screen.

Well only if something is transmitting it. If you want to go online to download it from some website, there is no web browser as yet. All online functions such as gaming hubs or rooms to meet people etc I assume will be in each game individually, there is no functionality for the DS to do this alone.

I would love to dl NES/SNES games to the DS, shame they get cleared when you power off. Seems like they haven't factored this a possibility and so they wont make it happen. Guess that takes things a step too close to illegal emulation cos it would involve sending the game in a manner or format they might not be able to control perfectly.

What are the chances of the Rev saving games to an SD card which can then be used on the DS though?

Revolution to download songs via iTunes and wirelessly send them the DS to be stored on DS Play-Yan. DS to be portable MP3 player.

I fail to find any interview with Iwata at this story's source.

Well... NES is easy, but SNES is probably impossible. The DS only has 4MB of RAM, IIRC, while many SNES games are 4MB in themselves, not to mention the memory needs of an emulator!

Now, they could put out an official NES/SNES emulator card that only plays Nintendo-encrypted ROMs and a GBA slot ROM storage cart. This makes so much sense there's no way they'll do it.

This probably explains why the Play-Yan hasn't officially been brought over here. They're probably working on one that works with the SD cards so that you can download games using the Revolution as a Nintendo "hub" and then transferring these games to the GBA or NDS via a newer version of the Play-Yan. This could help extend the life of the GBA as well as add to what the NDS can do...it'd be like iGames for Nintendo.

Awesome. I was hoping they would do this.

Although I was also hoping the Rev would take the PS3 route and use multiple memory cards: SD + their own. My idea for their own would be one that is basically a DS card. You could save Rev games on it and/or download DS demos to it, then put it in the DS and play them.

They could compress the roms, this way most 4MB games could still work.

Only a handfull of SNES games ever exceeded 4MB anyway, and they were all JP only RPGs. IIRC, it was just Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia and Tengai Makyo Zero.

Downloading GB/GBC games to DS would make more sense than NES/SNES imo.

why? you can already play gameboy games on the go, but you cant play NES games (without illegal hardware and stolen roms) on the go.

Not on DS. ;)

True, but that still doens't answer the question as to why gameboy game, which do have several legal pieces of portable hardwae to play on, make more snese than NES game, which dont, regardless of whether either can currently be played on DS.

this all reminds me of all those "gameboy evolution" rumors that made it sound like b/c with gb,gbc games would be handled differently than before and the system would have some internal storage.

That´s great. Now, Nintendo should allow this feature not being needed the Revolution. I mean, I want to play DS demos now! Let them happen when the WiFi service begins Nintendo!

It'd fit better with their concepts of "virtual console" and a potential "virtual handheld". Sure there's hardware to play old GB games (GBA SP), but that's being phased out and there's no retail infastructure to buy those old GB/GBC games anymore.

You can just play NES, SNES or N64 games at home already... so why bother including emulation in Revolution? It's the same thing, it's about an easy way to replay classics. Seems like a prefect solution imo...

Revolution's "virtual console" means downloadable NES/SNES/N64 games. Bring a DS to access Revolution's "virtual handheld" and play downloadable GB/GBC games.

It just occurred to me that the RumourDongle would be perfect for a broadcasting station as well. Just open up the Nintendo Demo Loader, click on the demo, click send, then download it onto your DS.

You know why I think this might happen? It's a reason for people who have networks already to buy rumourdongle, and Nintendo doesn't often say no to free money.
