Rey parentage and Palpatine details revealed through TRoS novelization

The Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker novelization reveals Rey's father is actually a failed Palpatine clone. One of the biggest (and most controversial) reveals in the film is that Rey is the Emperor's granddaughter, descending from ultimate evil. While Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams and co-writer Chris Terrio have done their best to explain why this plot twist is compelling, some viewers took issue with how it seemingly retconned The Last Jedi's stance that Rey came from nowhere and her parents were nobodies. The Rise of Skywalker tries to "from a certain point of view" its way around this, but it didn't work for everyone.

Besides arguably clashing with the themes and developments of Last Jedi, Rey Palpatine obviously had huge implications within the larger Star Wars canon. At the time of The Rise of Skywalker's release, the information presented made it appear as if Palpatine had been intimate with an unknown woman, giving birth to a son. For the past few months, fans have speculated who Rey's grandmother could be, but now it's been confirmed she does not have one.

During the scene in the Rise of Skywalker novelization when Rey is feigning taking part in the Sith Ritual on Exegol to trick Palpatine (right before she passes the lightsaber to Ben), she has visions of her grandfather's past. This passage in the book reveals after Return of the Jedi, Palpatine "thrust his consciousness" into a clone body. However, "the transfer was imperfect" and members of the Sith Eternal worked tirelessly to engineer a new vessel for Palpatine's essence. One of these attempts is described as "a useless, powerless failure" who was "a not-quite-identical clone." While this body wasn't fit to house Palpatine's power, it was still able to live and eventually became Rey's father.

Back in January, Rise of Skywalker editor Maryann Brandon revealed they cut additional Palpatine backstory in an effort to condense the film, and it's possible this information is what she was referring to. Brandon had mentioned that initially the movie got more in depth into "what was keeping Palpatine alive." And it's been confirmed the Rise of Skywalker scripted included a line about Palpatine being a clone. While it's understandable why the Rise of Skywalker creative team would want to keep things moving and economically find a way around the topic of Palpatine's return, a case can be made it would have been good to include some of this in the film. It may have cleared up questions some people had. Palpatine's role in Rise of Skywalker received criticism in some circles for coming across as sudden and tacked on within the context of the sequel trilogy. His past between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens could have been fleshed out.

Anyone still care about this trash?

The writers involved in this shit should just stick to RetardEra (ReDo) and their batshit insane view of the world.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
Star Wars is dead to me forever. Oh well. Life goes on.
There are a lot more interesting things in this world.
It's pretty pathetic.

They might as well just say the Emperor came down with COVID-19 and had to jump into another body.

I want my "gray canon" EU back with shit like KOTOR and the Darkstryder campaign but who cares what entitled nerds want.

This (all of it) is the aggressive polar opposite of what a saga finale should've been doing.

I'm amazed. We actually need an Episode X thru XII now to fix this catastrofuck.

So now Rey not only has a cloned Grandpa, but now a father who was a failed Palps clone too?
Wtf?

They say the old EU is full of inconsistency & bad ideas, have they looked at the current Canon EU? You have to admit even if you love everything new Disney Star Wars the new Canon has some crap in it already.

Also I haven’t seen TROS so forgive me if I am wrong but if Palpatine was still “alive” on the Death Star ruins for 30 years after ROTJ and he made a secret army could the Lightside of the force (ghosts) not detect his activity? and warn Luke “oh shit, palpatine is still alive, forget your exile you have a more important threat”

In the Sequel Trilogy force ghosts have been shown to have new powers, but did palpatine find a way to cloud himself from the force again like he did in the Prequels? Even then the one that served alongside him could the ghost of Anakin not sense him? whats up with that?

hahah oh man if you’re looking for logic or consistency in anything that happened with the Disney trilogy you’re gonna have a bad time, this shot doesn’t even stick to its own rules let alone the stuff that was established decades ago.

I typically enjoy that elaborate backstory bullshit reminiscent of the EU of old, but I was so meh on the new trilogy that I don't even feel like giving it a fair shake and reading it.

Don't think the new trilogy was THAT bad, though. It's like C-tier sci-fi, something mildly amusing to kill 2 or so hours with.

I haven't seen RoS yet, and don't care much about star wars much these days, but isn't that a tiny bit too much info to put in a damn headline?

I mean, I'm gonna watch RoS once it's out on streaming somewhere, but I get the feeling you just spoiled something pretty big with that healdine.

They might as well have brought back Mace Windu for an epic as fuck lightsaber duel after the Emperor got juiced from the fantabulous duo. When asked where he had been all this time, he says that he was ‘traversing the universe. You know, like Caine in “KUNG FU.” Just traversing from star system to star system, meeting people, getting into adventures.’

Dave Filoni would have had the chops to pull this off. Here’s a great Kenobi scene mash/tribute video that highlights his work in the animated series:

Star Wars X: Attack of the failed Clones.

(if someone would have told me in 1983, that this series will be the biggest clusterfuck of storytelling of all time, I would not have believed you)
In ten years or so, that title will belong to the MCU.

Nah, they are still rubbish. Star Wars died for me with Episode 1.

They’re poorly made films, but at least the overarching plot/narrative makes sense and doesn’t shit all over what happens in the original trilogy. Lucas just needed an editor and someone else to direct them.

What about the other point where Anakin destroyed a Palpatine clone, thus making the prophecy useless?

I hope screwing up the entire SW lore just for that worth it a few bitch cash.

At least we got Mandalorian 🤓

Got to hand it to Disney for creating one of the best comedies I've seen in decades with Rise of Skywalker. Shit is hilarious.

I'm only laughing so I don't cry.

I agree that episodes 1-3 had at least a directorial vision and Lucas clearly had an idea what he wants to do in which of the three movies. It's just unfortunate that nobody in the room was willing to stop him from including some of the bad ideas. Episodes 7-9 are just all over the place with directors actively undermining each other and no plan where to go.

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
We had bets in our office on what was gonna happen in RotS and it was a three-way tie. This would have secured the win for me. Fuck.

Embarrassingly bad movie either way.
