Mitsuo Terada, also known Tsunku, has been diagnosed with Laryngeal cancer. This was announced on March 6th on the official website of the artist. Tsunku is a name you might know from the Rhythm Tengoku/Heaven series, as he has been responsible for the music in those games. In the statement, he said that he had something wrong with his left vocal cord for 7-8 years. It was causing issues with high pitches and it made his voice a bit huskier. He went in for an inspection in February and the cancer was diagnosed as in being in early stages. He was surprised, but decided to accept it as a positive that he discovered it so early. Tsunku has been away for a while, because the treatment has been intense. He thanked the fans and assured them that he is mentally fit and ready. He plans to continue to work.

Didn't see a thread on this. As a fan of the RH series, I wish him the best. Thankfully he's discovered it early.

I was gonna make a thread on this, but thought it was old news; GN is actually quite late on the matter. Has there been any updates on his situation at all? I've tried looking, but haven't found anything recent, I really hope he's okay. I hope his treatment helps him, but that cancer is aggressive, especially for vocalists; even after a recover, it can significantly ruin ones quality of life.

I wish him the best.

Really sad, Rhythem had amazing music, really upbeat and cheerful. The golf ones are especially memorable, hope he pulls through okay.

Most people come out perfectly fine when cancer is caught early.

I'm sure he'll beat it soon enough. Can't stop Rhythm Heaven.

I understand the reason for emphasizing the connection, but just to be clear, Tsunku is FAR more than the guy who helps make Rhythm Heaven's music. He's long been a big name in the creation/production of Japanese pop music.

Just to give perspective to those who don't know him outside gaming.

Good thing they caught it in it's early stages. Think he's crazy to be planning this early to continue work. Take a break for a bit to recover man.

Its a good thing that he discovered it early. Looking foward to his next projects, or a least a new Rhythm Heaven 3DS game.

Thank you!

The Rhythm Heaven / Gold OST has been with me on my shitty mp3 player ever since the it came out.

Love the games, love the music itself. Easily one of my favourite VGM music.

Hope he gets better :(

Hope he gets well soon. I may only be familiar with a small body of his work, but I'm a big fan of the little I've heard.

Dunno if he smoked or drank heavily, but in Japan, it's a pretty good bet, and even if he didn't, the Japanese music and games industry, especially, has lots of smokers, so he was immersed.

Japan really needs to get serious about reducing their smoking rates. They still have almost double the percentage of smokers the US has (relative to population) and Japanese smokers tear through almost 2x as many cigarettes as a US smoker in a year. Legal challenges have gone nowhere. The government needs to lead the way and get the ship turned around.

Anecdotally, I've noticed it IS better than it used to be in the 1990s, when it seemed like Japan was one huge smoking area, but it's still much worse than it should be.

Anyway, sad situation. Glad it's pretty treatable in this case. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Sounds like good news to me. I hope he's able to get through this.

That really, really sucks. I hope he can get the proper treatment and hopefully it isn't mega-invasive chemo.

This is also unfortunate b/c it's the 2nd person in a month I've found out having cancer. The first is actually much more personal since it's a good friend's family member, and that one also came out of the blue.

Still strikes me as so odd there isn't a cure (or at least something like a vaccine...I at least know vaccines are for viruses and cancer isn't technically a virus) for cancer yet.

Wubba dubba dub, is that true?

Please get well soon. The Rhythm Heaven franchise is one of Nintendo's best, mainly because of the fantastic soundtrack.
