Bah. Phone typing. "doing a sequel"

Not an official announcement, but kind of an off-hand comment. So we'll see what happens?
A Goonies sequel? There have been many rumors over the years, and supposedly a script that fell into development hell, but as Hollywood continues to search for my recycled ideas – The Goonies never say die. Goonies director Richard Donner was approached (err corned with a video camera) by gossip site TMZ and dropped the bomb that “We’re doing a sequel” to the 1980′s classic film Goonies. When asked if any of the stars from the original movie would return for The Goonies 2, Donner responded “Hopefully all of them!” Watch the full video of Donner talking comic book movies and the Goonies sequel, embedded after the jump.

The last script attempt involved a new group of kids, as the daughters and sons of the original Goonies gang, going off on a new adventure. All of the original cast members, including Josh Brolin, have expressed interest during interviews, in returning for a second film, if it were to happen. For a time Warner Bros was considering the Goonies franchise for their direct to DVD sequel line, but thankfully that never happened. Last we heard rumblings in 2008 that new writers has been hired to give it another go, but that was never confirmed.

Despite the fact that this would be a solid contender for least needed sequel of all time, it would possibly be worth it for seeing the character of Chunk in the Year of Our Lord 2015.

Come on guys. Mikey's rubies only paid for their house for a couple of years tops.

They need to go back for all the treasure.

Goonies is my favorite movie of all time. I'd be down if it was done well, but knowing Hollywood, it will forever soil the Goonies name =(

i think this could be cool. imagine if they did cg sets, some cool pop-music tie-ins, and added more funny characters. plus they could always do postconverted 3d and add some cool screen effects to wow modern audiences.

in any event, i just hope they tone down the sex talk/language. it's supposed to be a kid's movie, not some puerile adult comedy.

I want them to just call it the Goonies. The franchise is old enough where people don't care if a sequel is coming out. All the marketing and posters can make note its a continuation of the adventure, but why call it Goonies 2 or Goonies:meaningless subtitle. Just keep it "The Goonies". I think it would be hilarious.

The movie is so self contained though. A sequel would feel so forced and formulaic...no idea where they could go with it.

They'd be better off making a straight remake that claims no ties to the original.

I blame gay marriage for breaking down the established moral fabric of movie remake law. Conservative Christians have been warning us for years that this would happen. :(

We got a sequel in the form of a game, and we've also had a sequel in the form of however many animated sitcoms over the years that have done a Goonies episode (the best of which is obviously Bob's Burgers). Let it die, please.
