The new rent, $400, is $100 less than twice the old rent. $400 is $100 less than $500, and so $500 is twice the old rent, which means that the old rent is half of $500, or $250.

Not really a riddle, it's just a simple math problem.

Okay:

X = what she's paying now
Y = what she was paying before

X = 2Y - 100
400 = 2Y - 100
500 = 2Y
250 = Y

Let x = original rent

400 = 2x - 100

2x = 500

x = 250
