Ridge Racers PSP developed in nine months.

Most launch games for any system are usually developed in less than one year. For Xbox it was 10 months, PS2 about 8 months...
This could change next generation, with almost 18 months for Xbox 2 launch games.

Even then, Ridge Racer V was buit in less time correct?
Yeah, I heard that too.
But R5 got all kinds of special treatment - at the Playstation show just weeks before the launch the game still wasn't gold, so they were cutting it awfully close. Amazing they shipped something so bug free too - considering there were other titles (DOA2 *cough*) that had a completely predictable way to crash them if you wanted.

Spider-Man 2 DS and Ridge Racer DS were both 5-6 month projects iirc (both actually started coding after E3).

That partially explains the monumental piece of crap that game turned out to be.
How they fucked up the gameplay so much when they had the N64 version as a base, especially considering they developed the N64 version as well is far, far beyond me.

Wasn't Soul Calibur ported to DC in something like nine months as well?

It kind of depends on how you define the development period. Development kits for Xbox weren't available until early 2001 (I think), but development on some/most titles had begun well before that. You don't necessarily need a devkit to start design or even coding work, as long as the approximate specs are known.

The problem with the PSP (and even more so with the DS), is that the time allowed between announcement and launch was very short, and specs weren't nailed down until late in the game.

So anyone know if the US PS2 versions of Ridge Racer 5 and Tekken Tag Tournament are indeed better than their JP counterparts?

Tekken Tag US version is better than its JPN counterpart as they cleaned up the visuals. Namco's goal was to clean up both Ridge Racer V and Tekken Tag, but only Tekken Tag managed to get passed the finish line for launch.

There is another interview with the Tekken developers about the US version of Tekken Tag but I'm still trying to find it.

In more concrete mortal-bound news, Namco is hard at work on making changes to TTT to improve it over the Japanese version. "There will be changes made, small tweaks, with extra modes, and changes in language," said a Namco representative. "They are also working on tackling the aliasing and flickering issues right now."

True, Halo had a much longer development cycle than 10 months of course.
But games like DOA3 / Project Gotham / Wreckless for example really only had such a short development time. For PGR they managed to recycle a lot of stuff from MSR so they had a big head start.

back in december, when I met Ridge Racers developers in London, they told me it took them 6 months to develop the game, not 9.

Handheld games normally have shorter development times and much smaller budgets. That will always be my main beef with the PSP, it will have inferior versions of games you could get on Xbox2 or PS3. If the games on my handheld are not different then the games on a console I have no reason to own one as I just don't travel enough to justify it and I hate those small screens.

What stops the PSP from having games differeny from the consoles? You know, there are niche games on every platform. You don't have to buy trendy games. But if you just dig Nintendo games more than whatever you expect the PSP to get, then that's cool too. But I don't think the hardware precludes the PSP from getting uniquely handheld experiences. Take Mercury for instance. Although I think it's kinda gimmicky, it's definitely trying to offer something only available on handhelds. But I'm not trying to sell you on the thing, just saying that's all. PEACE.

I hope you feel the same way about the GBA and the DS. Because everything equally applies. :D

Well the GBA provides a totally different experience then current consoles in that it is pretty much 100% 2D. If there was a console that gave me that same experience on a television screen that I could buy I would definitely prefer that over the GBA as well, but since there isn't I am stuck playing my 2d rpgs and metroidvania games on the SP.

I am not a big fan of the DS either actually. Even if it stays mostly 2D, I don't really like the touchscreen things, see I can hate on other consoles equally. :D

Absolutely nothing stops the PSP from having a library totally different from the PS3 and Xbox in terms of gameplay and asthetics, it is just I haven't seen that from developers. Most of them seem to want to bring watered down versions of their PS2 games to the PSP and judging from the reaction here that will be the path they continue to go down. I could care less about the PSP hardware. It is obvious from games like Darkstalker that if they wanted to they could make the same kind of games I love on the SP 100x better on the PSP, but I just don't see that ever happening. It is obviously early and things can change, I just have little faith in that happening. If the PSP comes up with enough unique games I am interested in I will definitely bite on it.
