Riot at NSM march

TOLEDO, Ohio — A crowd that gathered to protest a white supremacists' march Saturday turned violent, throwing baseball-sized rocks at police and vandalizing vehicles.

Six people were arrested and police, fire and media vehicles were damaged, Police Chief Mike Navarre said.

At least two dozen members of the Roanoke, Va.-based National Socialist Movement (search), which calls itself "America's Nazi Party," gathered at a city park to march under police protection. Organizers said they were demonstrating against black gangs that were harassing white residents.

The march was canceled, and the violence broke out about a quarter mile away from the park along the planned route.

Keith White, a black resident, criticized city officials for initially allowing the march.

"They let them come here and expect this not to happen?" said White, 29.

Two hours after authorities called off the march, 150 officers in helicopters and cruisers and on foot, bicycles and horses continued to chase bands of youths.

Apparently some gang left threatening notes on some white people's doors and then the white people "acted back" by calling the NSM in to march in their defense. In retaliation, groups like One People's Project and the ARA equipped citizens of Toledo with eggs and rocks to throw at the NSM, causing violence and ending the NSM march before it could even begin.

I got a lot of this information from the NSM's "radio" show and Hal Turner's website. They're both awful sites, but I was curious.
 
Alway's sad when demonstrations turn nasty.

But considering the type of "people" at the heart I really don't give a fuck.

This kind of thing happens all the time in Japan and parts of Europe. Not the violence per se although that's also common but in Japan, there's an extreme right-wing party that holds marches in Tokyo regularly, sometimes in full WWII battle uniform.

So let me get this straight...they went into a black neighborhood and basically gave the middle finger to street gangs...yeah i can see why this happened.
 
what's not said here that CNN makes quite clear is that the gangs, instead of retaliating against the protestors, generally went after cops instead. 8 o'clock curfew is in force and the mayor of Toledo has declared a State of Emergency.
 
Why a permit was given for such a march in that location knowing the obvious result is beyond me... but I guess that's why I shouldn't run for public office - too much common sense (which is unfortunately not very common).
 
This curfew they placed on us is kinda wack too, but I never go out anyway so it's all good.

I finally have a legit excuse, at least!

It's that whole freedom to assemble and speak. I think it would have been better if everyone would have ignored the fuck ups. What if there was a protest/march and nobody came?

Yep. In Canada, freedom is speech is limited by the government on democratic principles. So speech is not totally free and many Canadians I speak to are proud of it which is scary since the clause on the constitution limiting speech is very vague and a future authoritarian government could interpret it as any speech directed against it and effectively quash all forms of speech. Not that it would happen tomorrow, but the door is open for someone to walk in when no one is looking.

When it comes to speech, I tend to come down heavily on the side on the right of the individual to express his or her views given that they are only expressing an opinion and isn't infringing on some else's right to life, liberty etc. etc. Cersorship of speech irregardless of the reason is wrong in my mind.

The people on the other side are too stupid to realize that. Knowing this, groups like the NSM make their appearances because they know the media will give them attention even if only five of them turn up for an event.

Nah, a permit can be denied (and often is) if its clear that problems will result and that no peaceful assembly is possible (because your freedom to assemble is only for peaceful assembly). It would be like allowing the christian right to assemble and hold a march in front of the porno awards - no good could possibly come of that.

So you're one of those all for yelling "suicide bomber" in a crowded room or a march of 10s of thousands? Sorry, all speech should have limits on its expression based on some common sense rules.

That kind of speech infringens on someone else's life. I think there are laws against using speech in that fashion.

Speech in general, as in expressing a viewpoint, should be free. So if a neo-nazi wants to march down main street, he should be able to and express his view. I can understand people's desire to want to hurt someone who espouses a radically opposing viewpoint, but a person's inability to tolerate extreme opposing views says more about that person than the 'offender' who just wants to speak their minds.

But seriously, I'd let him do whatever...just as long as he doen't address me. But I wouldn't have to worry about that because there's no chance in hell Neo-Nazis would come and march where I live.
