Indeed. I like some of the things they're introducing but the tracklist is a few degrees off of abysmal, and that's all that really matters to me when it comes down to it.
I'm the opposite, considering the majority of music I listen to is punk Neversoft has hit the home run for me. NoFX, Rise Against, The Living End (FINALLY!!!) and stuff like Sublime and At The Drive in and The Mars Volta are right up my alley. And stuff like The Joker, Sweet Home Alabama, Beat It and Hotel California is the type of music I've been hanging out for forever, it's gonna go off at parties. In general there's just a lot more variety. HMX needs to follow suit (and sorry, but that means less metal). The RB2 tracklist was a good start but they've gotta follow through with a more diverse range of DLC.

The metal was only really during August. August was probably HMX's least diverse month.

The 20-track pack and the remaining songs can change that, though.

I'm starting to think the solution is to scrub the idea of whole albums. Have a few weeks where there are 1 or 2 good songs by 3 or 4 different bands, all from different genres.

At the very least have each album supplemented by a few single tracks that are from a totally different genre.

We already know the rest of the albums for the year.

Texas Flood
The Color And the Shape
No Doubt Pack

That's only 3 weeks out of 13.

We'll see. I was nowhere near this pessimistic before August. I looked forward to each week with excitement. Chances are I'll probably get a few tracks off all of those albums anyway.

M3wThr33 said:
I know. There's no surprises in there. Which means 2/3 of all the remaining weeks will be surprises.
You missed the joke. Janes Addiction.

I love how it's $10 more on nextgen when the only new content (charts + music) will be identical on all discs.

I find that most amusing when something costs $10 more than the PC version where you'll generally get even better graphics (if not now then give it a year for new hardware to release). Yeah... the cost of games is up. But so are sales. This is just like being dicked by oil companies. Sure the cost of oil is up, but when you keep posting record profits that works out to you just dicking the consumer harder rather than maybe make a bit less profit and charge something that might one day dream of being a reasonable price.

Ah well, I live in the city and take public transit the vast majority of the time. I think my girlfriend and I fill up our car maybe once a month at the most and generally less often than that. Then again we have some of the highest gas prices in the nation out here. Once again Europe is screwed even harder here. That seems pretty constant. Europe == screwing. Damn American puritanism!

Yeah but you know why that is....

<generalisation>
Because PC gamers look for any excuse to get out of having to pay for games and by charging less it gives a little more incentive to buy them.
</generalisation>

The real answer is probably licensing costs. We've heard developers whinge about how much Microsoft charges. Sony probably charges more for PS3 than PS2 because of Blu-Ray. And Nintendo seemingly puts their licensing application forms on the back of cereal boxes.

"zero value" means fuck all, m'kay? It's a physical disc no matter what you do to it and all of those listed factors have to be taken into account with physical media. Packaging doesn't design itself, print itself, or manufacture itself. It also doesn't do any of these things out of thin air. All of these steps cost money. Sure it was retarded to offer it like this (a code included in the AC/DC BRD would have been smarter and cheaper and probably driven more sales of said BRD) but that's what they chose to do. "They", however, could be anyone from AC/DC to HMX and I'm sure we'll never know.
:lol two different answers to the same question.

While I agree with you in general (of course it costs more to ship physical product) I have to point out that the design for the Track Pack probably took all of 15 minutes. It's bad, or rather, simple enough that even I could have done it.

Licensing costs and the fact that Microsoft quickly put out the idea that Next-Gen means games cost more to develop so you have to pay more. Whether it all goes to licensing costs of not I think it was just Microsoft wanting to raise the price of games. Sony was willing to go along with it because although I don't (and doubt I ever could) loathe Sony like I do Microsoft they also have a pretty strong track record of doing evil. Nintendo wanted to push a more casual market so they held onto the industry-wide pricing that we've all been used to for, well... decades now. Or were new NES games $40 for the majority of the time? I seem to recall that Legend of Zelda was more expensive than most other games when it was first released, but I was so young and it was so long ago that I can't recall what the costs were. Still, $50 was definitely the standard from the early 90s until today. I think Microsoft chafed at this and just wanted to charge more and needed a vague excuse to give to gamers.

You honestly think it was Microsoft? They are one of the few publishers that sell their titles for < $60USD. EA started this trend my man.

Saying that, accounting for inflation, games are cheaper than they were when I was growing up. Nintendo was the king of price gouging. I remember buying Conkers Bad Fur Day for $120AUD. These days 90% of next-gen games are $100AUD or less. I pick up most of mine for around $80AUD.

Those edits were key. This is where the problems comes from. Australia is the king of price gouging.

In the USA Halo 3 lists for $60USD as do all of their first-party games. Australia is just historically screwed when it comes to game prices. Not to mention venomous animals.

Not all first party games. What about Viva Pinata, Viva Pinata 2 or Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts?

Belgand said:

My point stands. If Microsoft started this trend to rip us all off why aren't the following through in all countries? Why did they let me buy Gears of War for $80AUD or Viva Pinata for $50AUD? Surely they could've charged $120AUD like EA was back at the start of the generation right?

The savvy shopper can buy any new release 360 game for the same price as it's Wii equivalent. PS3 games are always a little more expensive, though I put that down to Blu-Ray manufacturing costs at this stage.

I wonder why I even bother playing with random people online in RB. HAY GUYS 4 LOZ LETS PLAY BATTERYZ 3 TIMES LOL LOL LOL!!!

-.-
I played the other day with this kid, and when I went to "Make a Setlist" he started yelling in a high pitched, whiny voice "PAINKILLER! PAAAAAAINKILLLLERRRRRR!" So I highlighted Painkiller and he was like "YEAH! YEAH!" then I slowly started drifting away over other songs and he FLIPPED OUT. It was awesome.

I knew, but I didn't want to admit it. I just enjoyed the little hints.

Remember folks, my offer still stands. I'll buy this shit and ship it wherever you need, out of the goodness of my heart. You just have to pay the cost, shipping and whatever it takes to box the fucker up.

I just downloaded and played Greatful Dead pack (along with Moving Pictures)...god damn that shit is fun!

China Cat Sunflower is the most fun I've had since Crossroads.

It's a beauty ain't it. Believe it or not that is the song my disabled mate learned to play HOPOs on. It was like the holy grail to him, to be able to pass it on Expert.

Grateful Dead pack is only weak on the drums. It's gold for the other three instruments, though. Franklin's Tower's expert guitar track is so awesome to kick back and play, not to mention it's one of the best songs in the game to experiment with the effects switch.

I'd put it on par with the Who pack, with only the Boston pack above them. Really, though, all three are 'must buys'.

TheGreatDave said:
I don't really like the Boston pack that much on guitar. Mainly because of their little 4 notes of death, i.e. r-y-r-g. Fuck me up.
Turns and mordents are so common in music, I think I tend to just gloss over them, but I do recall having trouble playing them smoothly when I was first learning (Damn you, Shaum's Fingerpower!) They're a bit of bitch pattern, but eventually your fingers start to do it automatically when you hear that particular Ornament.

I wish someone could do a timeline of this thread, like a sales-age chart, highlighting all the dramas and furious masturbating by each poster. It would be pretty awesome.

Belgand, get on it!

I love going through the old thread. If you go here there was a group of us watching a live stream of people playing pre-release. Lots of excitement. My personal highlight? Proof I'm not teh biased.

I love the old thread so much. We should never have moved.

Why, exactly, has this become my task? Is my new title "Belgand, Keeper of the Drama, Recorder of Masturbatory Fantasies, and Lord of the Music Game Warriorz" or something?

I mean, I guess I could do it, but keeping track of all the relevant significant events and trying to sort out the important ones from the unimportant is a bit tough. Not to mention giving proper credit when something spirals well out of control.

Why don't I just do a big list of "Bands Belgand Hates That You Love"? Here, it'll be easy:

  • All of Them

Well, except Pavement, but that's a given.

Oh and there's no way in hell I'm going to venture back into the land of wind and ghosts that are the previous threads. Just this one. Grr... I usually hate going back just to verify what I said. I'd rather just repeat/contradict myself.

What would be awesome, actually, is if we had this sort of historical record in the OP so we could easily relive our favorite moments. Though I've often thought of it and just as often realized it wouldn't work sometimes it would be nice if we had our own sub-forum as opposed to just a thread. It would certainly make that a lot easier. But it would make tangential conversations and casual bits much harder.

We need BenjaminBirdie off the OP!

*campaigns for such*

You don't hate the Beastie Boys and my love for them knows few boundaries.

Maybe we should go start our own forum. Rhythm-Age.

Well, that's why you have me as OP on the GH thread. Although it's not the official thread, gets far less traffic, and I'm still a RB partisan who's considering whether I'll even get GH:WT (probably eventually, but likely not right away when it comes out). I'd say that Dave might be the better choice to take over there as he's around all the damn time as well and actually cares far more about it.

McBradders said:

Actually I hate the Beastie Boys probably more than anything else I've ever hated that's been mentioned in this thread. Well, except that one song the other day that I mentioned was my most hated thing ever.

Most Hated
  1. Rap
  2. Anything even vaguely like rap in any sort of way: e.g. RATM, Rap-rock, dangerously rhythmic spoken-word
  3. Country, with an exception made for Johnny Cash
  4. RHCP
  5. Paramore
  6. Nu-Metal
  7. U2
  8. The Fuckin' Eagles
  9. Foo Fighters
  10. Paramore

This isn't a complete list, just the stuff I see in the game/thread most often/can think of at the moment.

Pop-punk is one of my most hated genres, but there is the occasional band that gets it close to right (not Green Day, I hate them a lot). In general, however, it combines the lyrical depth, intensity, and cultural value of pop with the general instrumental ability, production quality, and songwriting of punk. While each is a necessary part of it's proper genre (I don't want a well-produced punk album with tight, catchy hooks... I want loud, fast, raw, and insightful) it's generally the worst of both worlds.

TheGreatDave said:

No DaveAge? For some reason I just like how that sounds.

TheGreatDave said:
We basically need this. Only ROCK.

We do need that, but I have no idea how we would ever get that. It looks like an absolutely ludicrous amount of work. I don't think I could do the work that went into even one of those posts.

Hey! I do have my own cab... erm, well, actually it's just a shitty little practice amp, but dammit, that's close enough for this purpose!

If the people need a hero, I'm here for them. DaveAge.com is parked though, so now we simply can't do it.

If the people ever need a villain. An arch-enemy to sit chortling with glee as he rubs his hands and strokes his beard plotting their downfall in his fiendish and oh so intricate and masterful schemes, I too am here. The fearsome Dr. Chum awaits with his bucket of torments (and some chum).

That was, of course, intentional. I'm not certain I drove the point home enough though, maybe I should have had another spot reserved just for Hayley.

That's why I'm not sure I'm the best choice for the archive project. I'm too busy seething with superfluous hate. Well, that and watching Twitch City on DVD. As many may have already guessed one of my primary hobbies is to watch decade-old foreign Anglophone comedy programmes on DVD. If they have Bruce McCulloch or Simon Pegg so much the better. Clearly these two activities consume nearly all of my time.

Incidentally Barry Lyndon was totally fucking boss. People who fail to lavish it with the appropriate amounts of praise should probably just be castrated right now.

You should remove the higher Paramore spot for Fallout Boy.

I merely have contempt for them. Hate would mean devoting more attention to them than they will ever be worth.

On an unrelated note because the box is right in front of me: Danish Twist sounds rather more like a very enjoyable erotic act rather than merely a very enjoyable breakfast treat. I suspect that both are equally enjoyable in raspberry flavour.

Also, never attempt to make a beverage from natural peanut butter and the remains of a bottle of non-alcoholic white wine opened a month and a half ago and sitting in the refrigerator ever since. No matter how close to each other they are sitting when you thirstily cast your gaze over them while searching for something to enquenchen yourself with. The taste of such a potable definitely belongs in the column for Things Man Was Not Meant to Know.

I don't CARE about ROCK BAND?

Are you serious?

My 360 has been MIA for like a month now. Believe me, if I had it, ALL I WOULD BE TALKING ABOUT WOULD BE ROCK BAND.

And, jeepers, sorry if I don't keep a chat log of the thread in the OP. If you guys want to start a Conversations About Rock Band thread, go right ahead. Yeesh.

I know I don't keep up with all the news and such as much as I ought to, again, because my 360 has been crapped out so I try to stay away from gaming stuff as much as I used to so I don't pitch myself through a window in grief.

I know I can do better in that respect, and I was working on a track list solution that became very unwieldy very quickly but I have to take serious issue with this idea that I don't care about Rock Band or this thread.
