RRELTTP: Resident Evil HD

Resident Crybaby
really, really, extremely late to the party

Growing up with gaming my whole life, somehow the Resident Evil series had always alluded me. I watched some friends play it here or there, was aware of some of the cheesy writing and memes (Jill sandwich!), but had never actually played any of the games. Some time over the years I had just wrote it off as "not for me".

That changed back in 2022, when Resident Evil 2 Remake received a "next-gen" update and went on sale for like 12 bucks, and I said fuck it and jumped in.

I was immediately hooked and after 2 Remake, I played 3 Remake, followed by 7, followed by VIII, followed by 5, followed by 6, then RE4 Remake. Really weird order to play them in, I know.

But now, in 2025, the only remaining games I hadn't played from the main/numbered series were RE0 and RE1. That changed this month and I finally jumped into Resident Evil HD.

... what a god damn game. Shocking how well it holds up, even with the fixed camera angles and tank controls. I understand now why this game is regarded as such a classic and as a bit of the grandfather of survival horror. The game is also extremely challenging, not so much in combat/survival, but in figuring out puzzles and testing your patience. It's a hardcore game in a way the other RE entries are not (RE2 probably comes the closest).

Anyway, I loved it. Of course there's cheesy voice acting and over the top characters and all of that which the RE series is known for, but there's also a genuinely creepy vibe/setting throughout. In many ways this is the most grounded of all the REs except for maybe 7.

I also played this on PC, so I was able to take advantage of all kinds of PC perks. I used a mod that allowed me to run the game at native 4k (vanilla is limited to 2560x1440), up the FPS to 165 (vanilla is limited to 60), was able to force 4X MSAA via Nvidia Profile Inspector (much better than the blurry and less effective FXAA the vanilla game offers), and also had a mod that recreated all of the UI items to be 4k native, and finally had a massive mod that replaced all of the textures in the game with 4k/8k versions. This last mod in particular was huge as it really upped the detail across the board and made the environments much more convincingly blend with characters/enemies/etc.. and look less "pre-rendered".

Here's some of my shots of this modified PC playthrough:

What a damn game! Bring on RE9.

Here's my ranking of all the RE games I've played:

  1. Resident Evil 2 Remake
  2. Resident Evil HD
  3. Resident Evil Village
  4. Resident Evil 4 Remake
  5. Resident Evil 7
  6. Resident Evil 3 Remake
  7. Resident Evil 5
  8. Resident Evil 6

Incredible looking game. Back in 2002 on a CRT it was gobsmackingly gorgeous. Hell, it still is today.

It never replaced the original for me like it does for a lot of people, but it also doesn't need to. Both do some things better than the other.

If memory serves me correct, you could also force the PS3 version to render and output 480p via XMB video setting so it plays nicely on a CRT that way too.

The mods you have here are a nice way to clean the game up on modern displays. I did the same a while back, and also forced some MSAA to clean up 3D model aliasing.

Out of all "old" games I played, RE is the best. ( I beat it recently )

It is the only game that my "very" GenZ friends have played and enjoyed as usually tell me to fuck off when I tell about old games.

Evergreen and iconic. Just a classic and a favourite of the gaming world. RE (franchise) is the quintessential survival horror as well a permanent pillar in video game high table.

I'm pretty sure I'll read similar posts a decade later, a century later.

Wow, this looks glorious. Never played the first one. Or I might have on PlayStation, but I have zero memories of it.

The intro was also aurally devastating if you could output Dolby Pro Logic II. I had literal goosebumps when the dog jumps at Jill and Chris shoots it.

But seriously OP, cheesy voice acting? REmake's VA was Hollywood levels compared to the PS original. Chris's voice is amazing.

Ultimately though, being a diehard fan of the original, I was a tad disappointed by the REmake. They really went out of their way to make a lot of things much more convoluted than necessary. I didn't like the part with the four masks, nor the Crimson Head boss it leads up to (amazing atmosphere, though). Lisa Trevor was also quite annoying. The Aqua Ring was neat, though. That underground section was very uninspired in the OG (but totally realistic, too).

I mean anything will feel Hollywood level compared to the original lol. The voice acting, even in the REmake, is really amateur today compared modern games.

If you really liked REmake, you should also, IMO, check out the original RE2 and 3, as well as Code Veronica. I love the fixed camera angle gameplay, personally.

That's not Resident Evil HD. That is the half-assed remake. Here is Resident Evil HD:

I assume you're joking, but for anyone interested in a modernized version of the original RE1 (and RE2-RE3) on PC, Seamless HD has been yugely surpassed by RE: Enhance.

It uses Seamless HD but significantly cleans up the background visuals so that instead of being a blurry, muddled mess, they're actually representative of the original prerendered artwork, just significantly cleaner and higher resolution.

Comparisons between SHD and RE: Enhance:

There are RE: Enhance mods for RE2 and RE3 as well.

The voice acting being so bad in the original plays a massive part to the games charm. REmake goes for a more professional approach, but ends up coming across as cheap, dull, and void of any charm that the VO in the original has.

It's one of the few nitpicks I have with REmake. The other two are... less precise tank controls. The orginal trilogy lacked the animations we saw in later entries, which meant it felt snappy and responsive. REmake is floaty.
Lastly, zombies being a joke to get past once you realise they do a short reach lunge (can't hit you) every-single-time you approach them slowly. This makes manoeuvring around them a breeze as you get a good couple of seconds to run past after the animation. In the OG, you could get caught out by them no matter how many times you played through the game. They would do complete bullshit angle grabs, which kept you on your toes.

I would also say the new music renditions were a downgrade. They were too subtle in REmake.

That said, It's still brilliant fucking game though.

The AI upscales on RE1 look horrible. RE2 and 3 fare much better but 1 is unwatchable.
Only so much can be done without going for a full redraw.

At the very least, RE1 needs a decent CRT shader. For the PC version this can be accomplished with Shaderglass. For PS1/Saturn you should use Retroarch and go nuts with the huge shader offerings they have. Can also use downsampling and PGXP to fix wobly models and low resolution.

  8. Resident Evil 6
What makes it unique is the fact that it looks and feels like a classic Gothic Horror film come to life. The fixed angles are essentially cinematography and every "scene" is framed so beautifully. Even the lab area, which sucks the wind out of every other RE game imo, is a 10/10 and looks and sounds like a nightmare.

It's just a gorgeous game with fantastic gameplay, level design, pacing and the densest atmosphere. Straight 10/10 in my book.

Fun-fact: This 'crypt' area is not pre-rendered in the remaster re-releases, they re-created it in 3D. You can tell if you look carefully enough, but the darkness and moody selective lighting makes it hard to pick out.

These look great but how can you make them work on a 1080p screen? Seems like only in Windowed mode they can look clean, in full screen they have upscaling artifacts.

That's a bit of nostalgia / rose colored sunglasses shaping your opinion though. Without nostalgia, I don't think this type of voice acting is going to charm many players:

Hitting on another point I meant to mention. The lighting, or just use of light, in this game is insanely atmospheric.

Resident Evil HD, Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 2 are easily my favorites in the series. The only thing that comes somewhat close to them is RE2 Remake.

Sure. Nostalgia plays a massive role, but it's not just the charmingly shit VO. It's the incredible game, and what it did for the genre going forward. Alone in the Dark was first, but RE is what truly got the ball rolling.

Fo those that want some truly "so bad it's good" voice acting, give Deep Fear on Saturn a whirl.

Game looks clean as hell and better than some current gen stuff.

Wish Capcom would go back to fixed camera angle, as nothing compares visually.

You gotta play og resident evil 2 and 3, these are absolute classics of atmosphere and gameplay on par with resident evil remake maybe even better in some aspects.

I also just recently played them for the first time and man they don't make em like that anymore

Not sure what you mean. They look fine to me at 4:3 at 1440p. They aren't perfect, but they're hugely better than Seamless HD. I believe the creator said he's going to manually fix areas where they're still blotched/smudged.

I am surprised you rank Village higher than 4 Remake

Village is still a great game and I had fun with it but I feel like it has so many issues, namely the story (Aka Chris is fucking stupid in this) and just how much the enemies shamble around making them harder to hit

Last summer I went through several RE games( RE0, REmake, RE2R, RE3R, Revelations 1/2, RE7). This year I finished Village and RE5. I feel like I got the most satisfaction playing Remake. I owned the Gamecube original back in the day but never got very far.

Look at the vertical lines. This is how the game looks at 1080p fullscreen. If i use any of the other windowed options, the image looks clean.
