I had a similar experience when watching it at the cinema the first time. However, I went to another cinema on my second viewing and it was so much better. The first cinema didn't project enough light on the screen so it made the picture darker and colours stood out less.

The 3D versions are colour-graded differently to account for the tinting of the glasses. The colours in the 3D version are much more vibrant than in the 2D version so that when you put the glasses on you should be getting around the same picture as when you watch it in 2D.

It sounds like your cinema isn't running the bulbs at full brightness so everything will look extra dim and colours extra muted.
 
Hmm, interesting. All of the films in 3D I've ever seen have looked much more tinted than without glasses, which is one of my big issues with 3D. It always feels like I'm watching a film with sunglasses on.

Although, outside of the floaty things, I'd argue that 3D added nothing for the film anyway. That was the one scene where 3D felt justified... I honestly didn't see the point of it for the rest of the film.
 
No way, mang. The scene where Grace, Jake and Norm are walking through the jungle is incredible in 3D. The first shot the 3D jumps out at you is in the cryo-vault with all the floating med workers.
 
I've only seen it in 3D once when it first came out so I can't really remember specifics, I just know that floaty scene was the one that really amazed me.

I left the cinema feeling very disappointed after expecting it to show me the 3D revolution. Maybe I'll watch it again one day to see if my opinion changes, but for the most part I hate the fact it brought back 3D.

Well until Glassesless 3D gets bigger then I'm doomed to watching the film simply on Blu-Ray so that I can report just how Meh it still is.

Maybe in 3D it will stop being Meh.

The water droplets. I admire Avatar for not having obvious 3D scenes like the majority of 3D films but it really does look better on blu-ray.

'Meh' is the first indicator to me that discussing the merits of something with that person is a complete waste of my time. It is the laziest critique in today's day and age. To hell with you and your 'meh!' May you forever live with your half-watched, 2D, SD 'meh' verdict of Avatar.

Hey, my critique is much more fleshed out on Page 1 and other people share my voice. I just didn't want to type Mediocre over and over again.

I haven't seen Avengers but I found the action scenes in Avatar to be unengaging and boring.
 
If a movie is only good in 3D and/or HD, it isn't a good movie.

Avatar isn't a good movie. It's not bad, but anyone who thinks that impressive CG makes a mediocre film great has incredibly different priorities in movies than I do. And that's fine, you know, to each his own...but to pretend that there are no valid criticisms or that the movie deserves all of the hype it got is disingenuous.

Or to put it another way, "meh".
 
Just wait, in 5 years whenever I get around to watching the last half of this mediocre movie my eyes will see the light and I'll come back and bump this thread telling Scullibundo just how correct he was and how I was wrong to ever doubt the magic of 30 minutes of visual effects porn.

Wait no, that won't happen at all.

"Meh" is an interjection, often used as an expression of indifference or boredom. It can also be used to indicate agreement or disagreement. It can also be used as a verb, (rendering something uninteresting or boring) and an adjective, meaning mediocre or boring.

It's a standard action film that borrows heavily from other stories and is mostly concerned with showing you a beautiful world.

You can post the dictionary definition all you want, it still doesn't apply to Avatar.
 
The best "blockbuster" of recent times. This movie is pure cinema escapism, it's fantastic action adventuring. If you couldn't lose yourself in it then that's your loss.

It is pretentious in that is has absolutely no subtlety in broadcastng its enviornmental/political themes in the most heavy-handed of ways ("They killed their mother" HAHAHAHAHAHAH). The tech is amazing and the action is obviously well directed but the visual design of the movie has kind of diminished for me. I watched it recently and it was just too bright and colorful and looked a lot like animation, particularly in scenes where there a lot of Navi (or ONLY Navi onscreen) and the night sequences.
 
I hardly remember the movie and I was actually completely sober when I saw it. :/


I do remember thinking the dialogue was really bad... and Weaver seemed like she was phoning it in.

Technically awesome, though.
I'm still holding onto hope that Cameron is able to make Battle Angel before the giant sea kraken eats him eventually. :|

But you'd be surprised how much the increased visual fidelity would pull you in, I think.

The only way to really see this movie is in 3D IMAX, the real kind you find at science centers etc not the Lie-MAX screen at most cinemas. I am not usually such a purist, but in this case it made a huge difference. (Saw it Seattle's Pacific Science Center). I am sure they'll have revival screenings as Avatar 2 ramps up whenever Cameron stops exploring the universe.

I suppose you're right that this could be considered pretentious. I never viewed it that way - I just saw it as bad writing :P
 
I honestly don't feel like Avatar gets the credit it deserves. Everybody praises the visuals of the movie, but not the story or the world it's set in.

I very hardly like "Holywood Blockbusters", but Avatar blew my mind. The film is gorgeous, I think the story while simple and straight forward, it's very well told and has a good pace.

The thing I liked the most about the movie was the world it was set in. I really wish they would make a movie based just on the world avatar was set in - See all the animals, all the species, all the races in it. It has a really fantastic setting.
 
I feel like Pandora is praised just as much as the visuals, personally. They kinda go hand in hand, don't they? The world is so beautifully constructed that praising the visuals is praising the world.

I agree that a focus on the planet and less on the human invasion would be more interesting.

Nah, I feel like a lot of times it's "Lol good graphix dont maek good moviz"

I think what makes the visuals of the movie fantastic it's how it connects an amazing world (Pandora, was that the name of it?) to the investment in the digital images the movie has.

I'm not a fan of Tolkien, but Pandora really feels like a creation sort of the type from a Tolkien book :P
