Anyone who grew up in the late 80's and early 90's can tell you that (aside from the Burton Batman films) the 90's sucked pretty hard when it came to comic book movies. Then along comes Blade. A superhero film starring a black lead that's also rated R.
I loved it as a kid and I think it's held up pretty well. This film is pretty much the only reason why I give David S. Goyer the benefit of the doubt. Wesley Snipes was perfectly cast as was Stephen Dorff. Great gore and action. Great soundtrack too. Fuck me, I like dubstep/electronic.
I didn't like the sequels very much but I know Part 2 has its fans.
Makes me wonder what if the Spawn movie was R rated and maybe had a better director. Hard to believe that both Spawn and Blade had the same budget, both had black leads, both were dark stories, but Spawn was PG-13 and under-performed. Whereas Blade was rated R and was a hit (made three times its budget back).
