Ruh-roh, lost my cell phone

I went to Six Flags the other day (awesome time, lots of good coasters) and on the very first ride my phone managed to find it's way out of my buttoned cargo pocket. So yeah, this sucks.

I am about 13 months into my two year contract with Verizon so I'm not eligible for an early upgrade and I obviously don't have the insurance on it. In a quick roundtable with various friends it seems I have three options, two of which are sane.

#1 - Add a second line to my plan for an additional $10 a month (and getting my contract extended one more year) then I can buy a phone from any Verizon retailer complete with rebates and such.

#2 - Search online at outlets or eBay for a phone which I can then get activated for a one time fee of $15 and still keep my existing plan. Obvious drawbacks are integrity of people selling said items and if I'll get everything that I need (friend bought a phone that appeared to be a good deal but was suprised at the lack of manual, home charger and battery).

#3 - Pay the ungodly high no-activation fee for a phone from previously mentioned Verizon retailers. This would eliminate concern of phone quality and piling on to my contract, but we're talking like 250% mark-up here.

So GAF I turn to you. Which way do you think I should go? Anyone else been in this situation?

I have a better idea.

1.) Call them up and explain you've lost your phone. They'll say a new one is crazy money. Then ask how much it is to cancel your account. I'm willing to bet that it's cheaper to cancel your account then it is to buy a new phone from them.

2.) Then you ask why you shouldn't just cancel your account and go sign up with Cingular (or whoever) and get a new free phone from them.

3.) Now they'll usually find a way to give you a free phone. It usually involves signing a contract extension.

Yeah dude, that sucks... I've lost 2 cells myself in the past. Both drunken nights out at clubs. It's not fun..... Since you're still on a plan, I'd say go with the #2 route. You can just buy a shitty cheaper phone and tough it out for the remainder of your plan. It'd be far easier I'd say than having to extend the plan an additional year.

But it's up to you. Best of luck dude.

*edit* Try what he said, it might work. Most companies would rather give you a deal than lose a customer.

My brother lost his set of keys at Six Flags... showed up in his mailbox months later. Apparently he had one of those Krogers discount cards attached; someone found it, popped it in the mail (as the card suggest) and Krogers HQ took care of the rest. Who knew.

This story doesn't help you in the least bit, but I thought I'd share it anyways. GL
