Rumor: Witcher 3 getting an expansion in 2026

The Witcher 3 is potentially asking The Witcher 4 to hang fire as The Witcher 3 could be getting its first proper DLC expansion in nearly a decade. It's being outsourced to a different company—if it's happening—and would follow on from Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine.

The Witcher 4 is CD Projekt Red's, well, main project. It's the long-awaited sequel to 2015's The Witcher 3 masterpiece. A recent tech demo gave us a huge glimpse into what we can expect. What we didn't expect was a bombshell rumor that The Witcher 3 is getting more DLC.

As reported by Polish podcasters Rock and Boris (through MP1st), a third major DLC expansion is planned for The Witcher 3.

"From the information we have collected, it turns out that the announced, mysterious project by CD Projekt Red, made by Fool's Theory, is a story DLC for The Witcher 3. This is confirmed information from several independent sources."

"What we know is that this is a DLC for The Witcher 3. Based on one piece of information, I can't confirm it any further, but the earliest it could be is in the future year. We also more or less know the order of the releases: first, mods for consoles, then the DLC for The Witcher 3, then The Witcher 4, and finally, the remake of The Witcher 1."

Weird, but I would play it.

Idk if I can trust any outsourcers to handle this IP right. The real question is though - why after 10 years? To tie it to The Witcher 4 and continue from there?

Fool's Theory are already making Witcher 1 remake. Strange that they would have resources for another project on the side. Studio was founded by exCDP people btw.

The idea itself is great though. The engine is still perfectly fine and there is no reason why it could not be used for new smaller scale story.

One modder is also adapting entire Last Wish book into a game with the Witcher 3 tools. First short story is already playable in early form.

CD Projekt recently said on their earnings call they have an unnanounced project with Fools Theory developing it which is "gaming-related". This project is unrelated to Witcher 1 remake so this rumor may actually be true

As for why, I wouldn't be surprised if this happened because of the bottleneck that comes with them being dependent on CDPR giving them access to all of their tools they're working for The Witcher 4 as TW1 remake is supposed to be using the same tech on Unreal. I assume remake is in a stage of development where they don't need to involve everyone from their team yet, meaning some of the devs are available to work on something else in the meanwhile. An expansion to already released game seems like a good project for a stop gap

This tracks, the switch version of W3 was just updated, and looks like a whole generational leap compared to the earlier version that was put out. Of course, everyone is familiar with the ray traced updates put out on the other platforms. It wouldn't make sense for CDPR to put in this level of investment to re-polish, and remaster the game for free.

Im guessing its to bridge the gap between 3 and 4 and probably an excuse to rerelease the game.

Looks like im gonna be doing another playthrough of The Witcher.....I cant remember shit so id be too lost to just start the DLC.
Hell I had to restart the game for Hearts of Stone & Blood and Wine, why not with this one.

First time I ever witnessed a DLC being made to a game released 10 years ago. But I'll take it. Loved Witcher 3 so I ain't complaining.

Titan Quest, Age of Empires II, Baldur's Gate 1, Neverwinter Nights 1, Quake 1 and Quake 2 are some examples of games which released new dlcs 10+ years after its release

It's not really a common occurence, but things like this sometimes tends to happen

Cool! I didn't know that (I haven't played any of those games, despite them being critically acclaimed 😳)

I haven't even played the existing DLC. I want to, but at this point I feel like I would have to replay the entire game first.

They are both incredibly good. I am also pretty sure you can generate save files ready to go for the DLC from the menu. Hearts of Stone has one of the coolest antagonists in any game IMO.

This sounds wild and weird but I'd absolutely buy it in the hopes that this motivates CDPR to fix the CPU optimization for good if they revisit the game. Witcher 3 is one of the best games ever made in my eyes, especially when you mod it up right, but it's just a shame that it wasn't left in as good a spot as Cyberpunk was from an optimization standpoint, and hopefully this motivates them to fix that injustice.

Would love a proper reason to get back into Witcher 3 again, such a great experience and game of the generation as far as I'm concerned. Can't believe I almost missed out on it, my brother had to persuade me to buy it.

Oh hell yeah. I adore W3 and I have been keeping B&W for a rainy day, gonna start with that soon.

A new DLC would be fantastic and hopefully not just a new side quest or something that they added when they patched W3 for current gen consoles. It sounds like it might be something big, hope it's true.

I think it would be extremely smart, actually. TW3 is still in convo of many, so it's not a dead and forgotten game. TW4 hype is building up, so them releasing new TW content, especially if its high effort and lengthy, it could have great out-of-nowhere marketing from just people talking about this unexpected expansion. I'd do it if i were them.

Yeah sure why not?! I wish more open world games did this and hopefully in the future open world single player games is treated like GAAS give me 5 years of DLC it's a much better future than multi-player GAAS crap everywhere that market seems oversaturated
