Russia's secret service has arrested two men in connection with a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Vladimir Putin after the March 4 presidential elections, state television says.

Channel One on Monday showed two men who said they were acting on the orders of Chechen warlord Doku Umarov. They said they prepared the attack in the Ukrainian port city of Odessa and were planning to carry it out in Moscow.

The station said three plotters came to Ukraine from the United Arab Emirates via Turkey with "clear instructions from representatives of Doku Umarov".

One of the men died in a blast in early January that prompted the investigation, the report said.

"They told us that first you come to Odessa and learn how to make bombs," the station showed a man identified as Ilya Pyanzin as saying.

"And then later, in Moscow, you will stage attacks against commercial objects, with the subsequent assassination attempt against Putin," the man said.

The state television footage, which was apparently shot in Ukraine, showed a video of Putin getting into his car being played on the laptop computer belonging to the second arrested man, identified as Adam Osmayev.

"This was done so that we had an understanding of how he was protected," Osmayev said.

"The end goal was to come to Moscow and to try to stage an assassination attempt against premier Putin," Osmayev said.

"The deadline was after the election of the Russian president," Osmayev said.

Nobody believesthis shit in Russia.

Yeah, and sadly people will still vote for Putin :(
I don't really see why Putin needs to come up with all these public stunts since over half of Russia will still vote for him even if he is not wrestling bears.

Because, people hate him and despite fact, that he will win at elections. There is not much possiblity of him being a president

I get that people hate him but surley he must understand that this types of PR-stunts belong in the past. Nobody buys this shit so why even bother to do it?

I'd guess because somebody will buy it? Or at least they think they will?

...as putin sadly disassembles the rifle he started putting together as soon as he smelled their fear.

A cheap and transparent ploy to boost his media presence. It's sickening to follow his campaign, first there was the stadium propaganda meeting, where people were forced to attend at gunpoint, now this.

I wonder what's item N on his agenda? Setting fire to a nun?

I really think that is bullshit. If today all Russia would vote and it would all be fair and square at the ballots Putin would still win. Big part of Russia isn't happy how things are but on the other hand many are afraid how things would turn out if there would be new president and new leaders. Majority of Russia is still afraid to ditch the status quo for new regime. There has been turn in tides and you can see that in many metropolitan areas, but Russia is big country. Moscow and St. Petersburg are hardly the voice of all Russia.

right before the election, convenient?
Because real terrorist attacks don't happen before elections? (The 2004 Madrid bombings lead to the same type of accusations.) Terrorists have targetted Russia/Moscow before, it wouldn't be surprising for them to try Putin.

Majority would vote for Navalny.

No they wouldn't. Yabloko is small party and don't have any seats in state Duma. While he has been on the news for the political activism he wouldn't stand any chance in elections. Party leader Mitrokhin could probably have some votes since he has long career in politics. But in the end I don't see any party that is heavily Pro-Europeanism to go long way in any elections at the moment in Russia. Real competition comes from the three other big parties in russia and Gennady Zyuganov is probably going to get most votes and Putin won't win with overwhelming majority vote (last times it was around 70% of votes) but he is still going to win.

Navallny is not a member of Yabloko. And he was not allowed to elections, but he isplaying biggest role in real oppsition and people love him. Nobody cares about Zyuganov anymore. Of course, he will win, but its doesnt mean that he will become a president again. Revolution will come sooner than many people can imagine.

But he isn't running. And in the polls Putin is the only one getting decent numbers.

You see. 50 percent of Russians would vote for Putin for some reasons. But ones who would not, they not just prefer someone else - they fucking hate Putin and his system. And people ready for some action.

That is democracy. The guy that gets support of 50% of the population, becomes the president.

He was too late, so that is just too dumb of him.

Yeah, my bad, but still I don't see Navallny as any serious contender in russian politics. Not all people love him, people who want a change love him but I don't see rest of the russia taking any actions, everybody admits things are not well but are afraid that things would get only worse if they usher into a new era. There won't be revolution but slow political transition. United Russia already lost it's super majority and in 2016 they will lose even more seats and will probably tie up with Communist Party at the rates things are going.

edit. also I have huge respect for Navalny don't take me wrong, I just don't see the political sphere of Russia moving fast.

Its called Tv propaganda and paying monies for votes.

He was arrested for 15 days, thats why he was too late, and if he was not, they would not let him become a candidate. Its always like that. There is no real opposition candidate in history that was allowed to take part in President elections.

Politics are always a popularity contest.

He had to register before December 15th, he got arrested on December 5th. If he had registered in October or November there wouldn't be any problem. Aside from that, he doesn't want to run.
