RYU GA GOTOKU: New Gameplay Vids

Most of the conversation is text-only, and you control the pace at which it advances. So really, there's no reason why you couldn't work through it with a dictionary and get every last nuance if you felt like it. Of course, some of the yakuza speak/kansai-ben may not be in the dictionary, but you can probably guess from the tone.

Yeah, that last bit is mostly what bugs me. Not to mention these kanji are tiny as shit, haha. Oh well. I have begun!
(I need more games with fucking furigana, damnit.)

What the heck are you talking about? There's no really much non-voiced important text in the game. The non-voiced stuff is like "hey, go to street x". Who cares about that stuff, you can figure it out for the most part due to the map. What's important is the story and it's 100% fully voiced and you can't control the speed of it.

Some of it seems to have subs though, and as long as long as that keeps up, I can get a good chunk of it. Kanji is tiny as shit though.
I'll probably miss a bit of the story, but I'm just doing the tutorial and it is fun. Doing the special move on different places in the environment is fucking sweet.

Guess what sparky? I have played DMC3 and the videos are still not interesting to me.
Heh. I agree with this guy. And what was up with the godawful music?

Yeah, in the full game you have like more moves than any action game bar-DMC3/NG. So it's not just punch punch punch.

example of several situations:

1. Guy is swinging at me with a stun gun. I wait for him to strike quickly do a circle strafe 180 slide behind him (completely with shadows) and do punch -> punch -> kick -> grab into backbreaker on my knee into tossing him into the guy behind me. Then I reach down and pick up his dropped beer bottle which has now broken and turned into a broken sharb beer bottle. I quickly run up to him as he's recovering off the ground do a slow-motion bloody quick move of stabbing him in the gut with the sharp end of the beer bottle.

2. Group of enemies are trying to circle around me. I quickly do a shadow dash out of the group and then perform a running two footed full body flying quick into the group knocking them all down. I grab a nearby bike and walk over to a punk whose still on the ground. Quickly I throw the bike down on his chest only to then jump in the air and stomp both my feet into the bike smashing it into his ribs. By this time the other thugs have all gotten up so I quickly do a punch -> kick -> spinning throw that wolf does in VF which knocks everyone down again. Then since I'm weaponless I run over to the downed opponents and step on a few of their faces, grinding the soul of the shoes into their cheek. Or kicking them in the stomach lifting them back into the air.

3. I'm surrounded by a group with swords. Weaponless, I do a dash in -> dash cancelling special stomach jab which knocks the sword out of one of the guys. Now I have a wooden sword. I have learned the art of sword fighting from my hobo-drunken sword master. I circle strafe around a group, dodging and dashing in with counter-strikes until I'm full of RAGE. Then I get near a guy and slash him straight down the chest taking him out. I drop the bat and circle dash around a smaller guy to stomach punch paralyze him and grab him. I think proceed to take him near a bench where I smash his face into the bench and the get on him and do the UFC left punch right punch left punch right punch to his face until he dies. Then I run over and pick up a giant neon sign and do my best impression of lumberjack swings as I take out whoevers left from a distance. Finally I grab the one remaining guy and headbutt him bloody only to finish by walking near a wall and putting an impression of his face in it.

Oh and then there's the spinning brass knuckles, the smoke grenades, the shotgun, the baseballs (good for throwing), the chairs, desks, tables, beer crates, tongfers, spears, and of course, my best friend the medieval shield which you can throw down and impale into downed enemies as it goes right through their heart.

Yeah, and if you weren't having the time of your life doing all that in battle, you'd also be watching the best crime drama ever put in game form. With extremely well directed cutscenes and writing that's so good if they had released this same story in theaters with a word for word script it'd be in the Japanese oscars at the end of the year.

Hmmm, and forgot to mention that Kiryu Kazuma, the lead character of the game, is the most badass cool character you will ever play as in your entire gaming life. Solid Snake? Kratos? Mario? Kiryu gut punches them to the stomach and then throws them into a pond. They can swim? Well he knocks them onto their knees and their hits a homerun into their face.

Yeah...there are times when opinions can vary. But with Ryu Ga Gotoku/Yakuza there is no variance. You either love every minute that you hold the controller, or you hate gaming and cry in the corner with your Mario doll. It's that simple. Best game ever.

Yeah, there's 100% subs for all the voiced dialogue. It's a life saver especially with all the gang titles.

Gaming sex in my head. Thanks.

So uh, you guys are comparing an action game like DMC3 with an action RPG? Whatever...

Anyway I'm sure if all I did was do the same moves in DMC3 or NG again and again, you'ill get boring videos of it too.

Good lawd Bebpo, you really know how to sell this game. That sounds completely bad ass.

Agreed. An RPG that does something different for a change and completely badass!! The characters, the action, the surroundings, the story. Nice having a "real world" scenerio to play for a change of pace.

The gameplay could be much better, but the art is not on par with Shenmue's. Not by a long shot.

Game is hawt. Shame I put it aside for so long.

Edit: Roofles at the video! Fucker needs to hit buttons other than square. Seriously, I was doing things that looked more fun in the fucking tutorial. :P

but the art is not on par with Shenmue's. Not by a long shot.

i like shenmue , but IMO Ryu takes a dump on it in every conceivable way - and that includes the art.

I don't want a new shenmue, i want a new Ryu.

Game is hawt. Shame I put it aside for so long.

welcome to the family

Exactly....a lot of that gameplay describes exactly what I'd want in a Streets of Rage sequel. Sounds like gaming sex because the best nasty sex talk is very descriptive. Go tell it like it is!

Shenmue...is a different game, let this one stand on its own merits. You won't likely get a game like this out of anybody else, it's what makes Sega unique and relevant.

Bebpo plays this game up at such heights that any slight variance of opinion will be catastrophic for his impressions.

But since everyone pretty much seems to agree here, where is the US announcement?

That definitely looks like the Spikeout mechanics running under the hood. Man, I want to bloody some dudes up! I hope they don't hold onto this all year making us wait until Christmas, but I could easily see that happening. :-/

Man, now I want to go beat up shit. HERE COMES THE BOSS

Patience grasshopper...Sega's already secured the US trademark for Yakuza (and we're pretty sure that isn't the name they'll be using for the next Billy Hatcher game), but they're not gonna announce a game with a projected fall release date when virtually nobody else in the industry has anything officially slated for release past August.

This game won't quench my desire for Shenmue 3 BTW...if anything it'll only make that desire grow based on the description. And frankly I'm greedy...if I could get Yakuza 2 and Shenmue 3 as well, then so much the better for me.

[edit]
duh just notice someone said the same thing...hehehe...[/edit]

would really love Ryu Ga Gotoku 2 and Shenmue 3 as well :D

According to Famitsu numbers on last, last week's sales.....

Ryu ga Gotoku - 8,213 (total: 325,601)

Good to see it's still alive! I hope eventually it breaks at least 400k in Japan. ^^;

A not-very-flash DIY gameplay/battle movie that I've made which involves a little bit better combat in response to the 'borrring' ones already there. Hopefully it shows RGG in a bit of a better light (sans loading times, I know it's long).

It's on rapidshare, but at least it's only 7.5 MB. (requires DivX).

That's definitely much more fun looking, thanks.

With all these reaction, I think I'd better not watch the video at all. :lol

I'm really glad they are bringing this over here. I'll bite all over again, and again - gladly.

This game does seem pretty class. Only having tested the first 20 minutes or so and not being able to follow pretty much any of the plotline(aside from making logical guesses), I was transfixed on how artful Sega handles the baditude of your main guy.

I think the tutorial mission involve you and a cronie heading off to collect an unpaid kickback from some squirrelly boss of a Mahjong parlor. (Or at least that is MY translation of the scene) Even just the first encounter(pre-upgrades) allows you to do some crazy shit aside from basic 3-hit combos. I particularly loved dragging thugs around with one-hand, looking all ruff and cocky, freely deciding which piece of furniture I would slam his noggin against.

My only knock so far is that the graphics aren't all THAT impressive(at least in the early stages), and I felt severely limited in how much freedom I have in the slums of Tokyo. Again, I was probably expecting too much too early, but invisible walls and on-screen errata dictating what I surmise as "Not here stupid! Go to the blinking thing on the map!" were a dissapointing blow. I assume this changes though.

Fucking golfswing! :lol Makes Gametrailers videos look laughable instead of boring. The halfsecond long loading transitions seem a bit annoying though. When running around the city, fine, that's acceptable. But when fighting?

The preview in this month's PLAY magazine mentioned that the blinking spot shows you where to go but you're always free to venture off the main quest and go do sidequests.

PLAY has a preview? How is this not confirmed stateside?

Those transitions only happen when you press the 'Special' button to whoop ass as the engine has to refocus when you strangle someone with the golf club, for example. In that split second before and after it you're invulnerable, so no worries there. Anyhow there isn't any other transitions during normal fights.

Brandon, the city fully opens up by about Chapter 5, so there's a way to go.

Yeah, the thing about RGG is that you actually can beat most of the game just doing the stupid basic moves over and over (knock someone down, stomp, repeat, etc.) But then, you can also do all that crazy and fun stuff that Bebpo was describing instead as well if you put a little extra effort into it and try new things.

It's up to you basically how boring or exciting of a fighter you want to be, and it's a big part of the fun of the combat to max out the craziness instead of going for the boring kill.
