S5 reviews hitting

One of the things it will come down to for me is sound quality.

So far I've read the HTC One M8 has really good audio so it will be interesting to see how it compares with the S5.

my only decision is basically do i stick with my S4 or not.

not sure about the form factor this time, but i think i saw one in the wild today and i have to say i liked the look of it. going to wait till i get a hands on at least. the feature set as always from a galaxy is sounding good.

I have an S4 also.

The S5 form factor is more like the Note 3, more of a rectangle and less tapers on the corner, which I really like.

I actually don't have an upgrade until september so I may just wait and see what the Note 4 looks like, but I really like the S5.

Plastic or not, I LOVE my S4 and would have no problems whatsoever holding off until next spring for the S6

The S4 is still great, and the S5 isn't worlds apart from it.

Is the S5 worth it's price? Yes, but if you have an S4, you shouldn't worry about getting the S5 at it's lauch.

you know so many sites ripped on the s4 for it's design .... the thing is a marvel ... so slim, so light ... the benzil is so tiny. look at the sony phones ... on screen nav buttons, but the screen is smaller or equal to the samsung phone, and yet it has this whopping great lower benzil. just smarter use of space by samsung.

i'm a bit surprised at GSM's review there re the codec support, the galaxy phones have always been top tier re codex support ... and the s5 can't play MKV's? ...something is off there ...

If you have an S4, what would be the point of getting an S5, seriously?

Use that phone until it's worn out completely. The cycle of cyclical consumption most people live in is disgusting. There is no need for a new phone every 12 months or less.

I'm sure it's a great phone though, looks nice.

in two years time a phone's resale value drops to virtually nothing ... you end up spending more going from a s4 to a s6 , than s4>s5>s6

i buy outright though, not on plans.

Unless they've made significant strides I'd put my money on the M8 hands down. The first HTC One had amazing sound and stereo speakers.

iPhone's hold their value big time and you clearly don't end up spending more by purchasing less phones, that statement is just insane, lol. It is obviously more expensive to purchase 3 phones rather than 2.

It's not only about the money that I'm referring to either, it's the finite amount resources that these phones requireto be constructed and then they're just tossed aside a year later, it turns my stomach.

The improvements look nice, but as an S4 owner (who's finally happy with the phone thanks to CyanogenMod + an extended battery) I'm just not interested. At this point, I'd be more interested in the Note 4 (or potentially whatever the sequel to the Moto X is, if Lenovo even lets Motorola make one.)

Seen them in person today, and for all the knocks against it, that thing is svelte as hell and a very worthy phone. For looks alone I would give the phone 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. Its really stylish in person.

Not really. I have the S5 with me, and it looks clearly superior.

I think its a matter of opinion. I think it "feels" better and its certainly faster, but the physical factor isn't exactly awe inspiring. Still not sure I care for Samsungs new UI. Their settings pages stretch on FOREVER.

I've been developing on one for a couple of weeks now, and it seems like its a decent purchase if you want o continue living in the Samsung family, but I like the HTC factor MUCH better.

I've been getting a lot of texts from my phone company about this (maybe cause I have an S4). It's probably going to be something stupid like $1,000+ here so I don't see why they even bother when i pay like $30 a month for my plan.

Don't think any phone can match the One's audio output. Goddamn this phone sounds great.

So does the S5 heats up as badly as the S4? There was a point where I just couldn't use the thing, and I wasn't even watching videos, just browsing the internet.

Yeah, the Xperia Z is just a colossal waste of screen real estate. LG got it perfect with the G2. The bezels on the Z are way too large for a phone that doesn't have any face buttons.

It has the S801 which is quite a lot more energy efficient and the screen uses a lot less power so it should be cooler. Engadget reported that they couldn't make the M8 uncomfortable hot despite its aluminium body so the S801 seems to stay cool. Here's a comparison of total platform power with the same screen brightness (200nits, quite high).

Browsing the net is a surprisingly high CPU draw on smartphones. I wish there was a feature to disable the scrolling animation and also reduce the CPU frequency to get more battery life. My Nexus 4 often hits 40C battery temp when I browse Neogaf with the lowest screen brightness.

Can you please post some picks of it and give us your opinion on it?

I loved it. It's much prettier in person than in pictures. I only have the white version with me:

On the other hand, Anandtech suggests that thermal throttling kicks in for the S5, allowing the M8 to outperform it in some benchmarks. As to whether those benchmarks are representative of real use - who knows.

Yeah it is kind of insane, I browse Gaf with images and gifs and avatars disabled, yet the phone used to get to 40 c as well, good thing the S5 seems to improve on that.

Do they still bloat up android with those ridiculous gimmicky features like tapping the top of screen to scroll up or shaking your phone to open up the camera?

Not much buzz on the net about this phone. Verge or Engadget haven't posted their reviews and the phone is launching today.

Something weird is going on with those sites. Some other sites had their reviews up a couple days ago, including Anandtech, which is a more niche website for phone reviews and usually has slower reviews. Regardless of whether you think it's an exciting redesign or not, they are surely losing a lot of hits by not having reviews up. And they did put up reviews for the M8 as soon as the embargo lifted, despite that phone being a similarly incremental update over the M7.

I bet there is some issue with Samsung not providing review samples to them for some reason.

Got it in our store to play with 2 days ago.
Faster than M8, and the UI at least to me is less offensive than Sense. Camera auto focus is insanely fast, and the pictures are amazing for a smartphone. Par with 5S or maybe a big better.

I was dismissing this phone before release but it's a good package.

Finger print sensor is the same technology as the One Max from last year. Not nearly as good in implementation or accuracy as Apple's solution. 10.96 gb of usable memory in our demo unit as well.

Still 9/10 phone even with all the knocks.

I played around with an S5 this afternoon. It's fucking tremendously speedy. And a 5 inch screen seems just about perfect for my hands. It looks much better than in the photos. It feels good too.

I refuse to buy plastic phones. They feel awful. HTC or iPhone seem to be my only options.

I agree. Something about grabbing the HTC One and having that cold metal feel. Just love the industrial design. But Samsung must have done something right, because the Galaxy line is a huge, huge hit. And most people just throw it in a case anyway.

I've been thinking about switching to the HTC One or something when I upgrade from my S3, but it's tough trading off Samsung's feature set, even though I like the design of the One better.

The One is like holding a bar of soap from when I tried it. If I use that as my daily driver, without a case I will 100% drop that shit.
