Saints Row gameplay footage

yeah i was thinking if its good a gta clone at launch could be big and MS might have an ace up their sleeve with it.

:lol

One thing I don't understand is how a dual processor G5 with a modern gpu is having such a hard time running these games that don't look that far above current xbox games. Anyone play games on their mac?

It doesn't really look that bad, it's just that when you have the camera so pulled back a lot of the detail is lost or hard to perceive. The lighting does look nice.

It's not great, but remember that it's a GTA style game. It looks much better than GTA on the XBOX now. The lighting is much better from what I can see and the models aren't the choppy messes they are on current consoles. The environments are also considerably detailed for a game like this. It's not GoW but for the type of game it is it's not ugly.

Well, I assume that there is no optimization whatsoever, since its not worth doing on alpha dev kits.

Sheesh...I dunno. I mean, yeah, it sounds good and all... I love the GTA titles for their storytelling, generally fun missions and sandbox angle...but I'll just have to wait and see, I guess. The whole criminal 'simulator' bit is getting long in the tooth now for me. Maybe I'm old fashioned or something, but I want to see one of these focus on a more caper-style of design...with heists, con-games, and other ways of being a criminal...not just being a thug.

Actually I wasn't talking about this game in particular, I was talking about in general.

This game is embarassing. I watched multiple people shaking their heads in disgust during the trailer... even though it has street cred and crews and shooting and explosions!

Oh... well in that case you should watch the G4 E3 coverage. Allard was saying that basically the devs don't make the games for E3, so what people see are what they're working towards, but they're not taking more time than they really have to for a demo at a trade show. November will tell.

It actually looks pretty great for what it is. It's a large scale game, but has doom 3 like lighting, ragdoll physics, what looks like a generous amount of geometry on the characters. May end up playing like crap but we'll see. Could be good.

Couldn't they rip off anything more from GTA?

Sheesh it LOOKS like GTA, has the same animations, view perspective, GUI...

The aiming looks alot eaiser compared to GTA. Ripping off great games is not a bad thing either. If thats a launch title im sold.

Yeah looks like they ripped off GTA, but still the city looks very nice, but i think the game might end up being rather average :/ well depending on the gameplay of course. It would be really cool if you could have massive gang-fights that span the whole city.
It's a 2006 release so they still have a lot of time to make it fun.

I'm not saying this game will suck, it may be quite fun in the end but this thing just screams "we're faster than you R*".

I wonder if R* has seen it.

Yes I know you can't copyright thugs & gangs stuff but this is too close IMO. Basically GTA:SA with normalmaps and shadowing.

Even the pop-ups and fog is still there :/

Seriously, I can't see how anyone can criticize Nintendo's claim of Revolutions power when games like this are supposedly representing "next generation". I have yet to see gameplay footage of a truly jaw dropping next-gen game except for maybe Oblivion. The games are obviously better looking and more technically advanced but they are nowhere near the jump between the 32-bit generation and the current one.

I especially like the fact there's no loading at all. Switching between indoors and outdoors never looked better. My only question now is how large the city/play area is.

it looks so this gen in screens that I didn't bother downloading the movies. Is it any good?
It looks like GTA with better graphics and lighting effects. GTA definitely didnt represent the best of this gen in terms of graphics pow wow. I think we can say the same for this and next gen stuff.

Looks nice, probably plays just as good. Too bad it's so damn generic; like GTA without the character. And after three GTAs and many similar games the formula is really wearing thin, at least on me.

On the other hand, Frame City Killers looks pretty bad but the gameplay sounds far more interesting. It's like GTA meets Hitman in a more futuristic setting.

Oh no, not another GTA clone, what's happening to this industry? These damn suits are going to run it into the ground...I just read that this game was originally named "BLING"!!!

The story unfolds in many executive suites like this:

Mr. CEO: "Hey Joe, this game GTA is selling like hotcakes, why don't we have one of 'em yet?"
CEO Sidekick Joe: "We'll get right on it, boss!"

Sidekick Joe picks the phone and dials studio head Bob. "Hey Bob, boss says we need one of 'em GTA games, pronto!"

Bob: "But Sir, we're working on this great game, original concept, new gameplay, you guys greenlighted it just few months ago...Plus we don't have any experience making games like GTA?"

Sidekick Joe: "Drop everything and make me a damn GTA game or else..."

Bob: "uh...ummm, we'll see what we can do sir..."

Ubisoft coming out with 187 Ride or Die. Midway coming out with Fear and Respect. Activision put out True Crime and True Crime 2 is on the way. Vivendi is working on 50 Cent's game, Bulletproof. Even Eidos has a game coming out soon called 25 to Life. How did Narc do for Midway, wasn't it supposed to be a GTA clone? Scarface, Overdose, I know I'm missing a few...We need more cowbells!!!

I agree. that game not only looks like pure crap, but has a 10fps framerate to boot. :lol

I'm of mixed thoughts on this one... on one hand it looks... like a much cleaner GTA which we should expect it to... and I like that you can call up gang members to help you(though hope that means that you can eventually have more than one show up to help you). On the other hand I read the Game Informer preview and I don't see much in terms of the way of added new stuff yet on this one... I will say that I'm happy that this is coming because hopefully it'll be good, and push Rockstar to make sure the next GTA is THAT much better than their last product AND this product.

187 Ride or die... is a strange game it's more like auto combat from what I've seen... Fear and Respect from what I keep reading isn't an open environment. 25 to Life seems to be focused more on online multiplayer.... and Overdose seems to owe more to Max Payne than GTA....

Is it really surprising that this genre is now filling up? I mean thinkin about the fps genre... at the beginning... not many.. now? shitloads... some good, some bad... same thing'll happen in this open environment type genre.

Yeah. It'll be interesting to see how much, if anything, new the game brings to the genre.
One thing I thought was slick.

When you're in a car, you'll have the expected array of radio stations to listen to. However, once you purchase or help yourself to an MP3 player, you'll be able to listen to the tunes as you go about on foot. In a cool but subtle use of the 360's powerful sound hardware, your MP3 music tracks can drown out the noise of the world around if you turn the volume up on it. However, it's also not the smartest thing to do when you're traveling through rival gang territory, as you'll likely miss key audio clues that will tip you off to someone about to take a shot at you.
