I've got a friend who is doing a thesis on game development and I've been looking around for some information for him on how many titles get released each year for each of the major platforms (ps2, xbox, gamecube) so he can use that to attempt to track the expansion of the industry etc with very little luck.. does anyone know where i can get hold of this information? or do you have it to hand?

edit: obviously i could pay to get hold of it.. but he doesnt really have deep enough pockets for that

You can search IGN's game database by release date and platform. I wouldn't take the results as gospel, but it might be useful to get a rough idea.
