Sam Raimi and producing partner Robert Tapert kyboshed those rumors about a proposed Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash movie, saying clearly, "That won't happen." Raimi elaborated on why he didn't feel it appropriate to bring Ash into the battle royale.

"I have great respect for those franchises," Raimi said. "I didn't want to be in a position where I was protecting Ash, the character that I want to eventually make another movie with one day, protecting him and not allowing the director to do what he felt he had to do. I didn't want to be in a weird position like that. I have a great deal or respect for Sean Cunningham. I think he's a brilliant filmmaker. He made some classics. I just didn't think it was a winning great situation for anybody."

That said, Raimi could still speculate on the winner of the proposed fight. "I don't know, can you kill Freddy or Jason? I think Bruce Campbell woulda' kicked their asses. First I think they would have had their way with him in probably 80 minutes of punishing him which I would have enjoyed."

There were early talks on the project but Variety published a report that the film was a done deal before Raimi and Tapert were ready. Pushed to decide, Raimi did not feel confident enough to lend his character. "I wanted to give the fans what they want with that. It's hard to know what the fans want with that, if that was the proper treatment. I just don't know. I don't think so. As fun as that sounded, I think they're in two different worlds, the Evil Dead and Jason/Freddy. Maybe another time, that would be a better combination."
There you have it. Ash won't be fighting Freddy or Jason any time soon.

This doesn't jive with virtually everything else that's been published and as so, I think I'll wait for a more reputable source than Latino Review to post it.

If it's true, though -- what a bummer!

Sounds like he still wants to do Evil Dead 4, though. I can live with that.

Since when was Latino Review not reputable? They get tons of exclusives and are generally very up-to-date.

They also have more from an interview with him done over this past weekend where he reveals that Sony wants Spider-Man 3 to be the last one, which I can only cheer about. Only one more of those shitfests to dominate a summer.

Great news. Ash doesn`t belong in a shitty movie with those shitty characters.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves... the Evil Dead stuff including Army of Darkness are great movies... but they aren't exactly high art either.

This is pretty disappointing.

And personally I think most movie series should stop at 3....

Maybe so, but it's a definite step up from the standard Freddy and Jason tripe of the last 10-15 years.

They're as reputable as Dark Horizon or any other site in that vein. They're definitely not Variety and they've been wrong before, so I'm hesitant about this news. You've got a New Line executive, a Variety report and a billion other more official reports that point to the contrary. If this were on AICN or Dark Horizon, I'd say the same thing.

Not that Latino Review is a bad source, but I think I'll wait for another source to corroborate this report.

Uh, no. Sony doesn't have any say if it's the last Spidey flick or not. They have the license for a limited amount of time and Marvel Entertainment has all these strings attached following their lawsuit settlement. It's Hollywood. If it does huge numbers, I'm sure Sony will make more. And if they decide not to make more, Marvel will just move the property elsewhere, like they threatened to a couple of years ago.

This will be the last one by Sam Raimi, though. I think there is some confusion on the part of that interview.

ON ANOTHER NOTE:

I'll use this thread to post news on another Bruce Campbell cult classic, Bubba Ho-Tep, and a possible sequel...

"Bubba Ho–Tep" (now showing at select cinemas across the UK) is without a doubt one of the year‘s most enjoyable movies and, according to our exclusive chat with director Don Coscarelli, fans of this tale of an aged Elvis battling an Egyptian mummy can expect to see the King of Rock n Roll taking on some more supernatural foes in a follow–up.

We asked him outright if he and leading man Bruce Campbell are set to bring the rumoured "Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She Vampires" to the silver screen anytime soon; "My sources say yes. Things are looking quite good. MGM was very happy with the results in the States, the UK‘s looking very solid, there‘s a lot of fan interest in it – and Bruce would love to play some more of the old hound dog! So there‘s a good chance we actually will make that film." However don‘t expect filming to kick off any time soon as Coscarelli has yet to come up with anything other than the title, "There is no story (yet) so we‘re gonna try and cook up something good hard to say (when), but as soon as we can."

Oh no doubt Freddy and Jason are heavily over-exposed, but there have been some standout movies in both series, I think the same goes for the ED series. Evil Dead one was a serious movie and was good, Evil Dead II dipped in to camp... and was ok, Army of Darkness is HEAVY camp but was great fun. Jason X reminds me of AoD in that neither REALLY takes itself series... unless you listen to the Jason X commentary on the DVD... that was kinda weird.... all IMO of course.

Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness are infinitely better than The Evil Dead, and very different flicks at that. Evil Dead II is widely regarded as the best of the trilogy, certainly by filmmakers, but Army of Darkness seems to be the fan favorite.

All of the series really mesh well at this point as neither New Line franchises take themselves seriously. There's a link to Evil Dead in Jason Goes to Hell, and save for one naysayin' dork in this thread, the rumor of Ash in a Freddy vs Jason sequel was met with a collective fanboy joygasm. The fact that it's the matter of so many geek reports should show Raimi that it is wanted.

I think what this really shows is that Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert have plans to keep Evil Dead exclusively within their Ghost House production company, and might not want to share rights/money with New Line. That sounds believable. Considering how both got fucked over by suits with Army of Darkness, I can't blame 'em if they want to keep the film within house.

The main problem I had with Freddy vs Jason was that it was much more a Nightmare film, rather than a Friday the 13th one. I can see how they tried to balance it, but in the end the pacing of both franchices is completely different. Adding yet another character to it, will simply make it a HUGE mess.

Not high art? Don't make me use my stuff on you baby! ;)

As for Bubba Nosferatu, Yahoo! The sooner, the better. Maybe they'll have something done in a couple of years. I just hope The King has a commentary on that DVD as well.
