Samus aran being a complete mute and essentially a robot in metroid prime 4 is dumb.

I've been watching walk-throughs of prime 4 on YouTube and it's utterly ridiculous that retro studios and nintendo decided to make samus aran an emotionless and devoid of life character with no personality. You have samus traveling with multiple characters throughout the game and they're talking to her directly, and yet she says nothing and dosen't even acknowledge them essentially. It makes 0 sense to write samus this way and it comes off as extremely lazy because you're not developing her at all.

Another problem with this is that there's no dialog options from what I can tell meaning you're essentially playing as one of the most boring protagonist you could possibly think of. They have no voice, they don't speak in terms of dialog, and they wear a suit meaning they can't express anything. It makes them a boring character and it's crap writing to do this to a character who is a person beneath the suit that should be developed. They should've developed samus the woman/person by giving her a voice, giving her expressions, giving her a background, and GIVING HER SOME GOOD WRITING!!!!!!! As a gamer it's impossible to relate to a character who is essentially blank with nothing going on because the game gives you 0 to latch onto and sink your teeth into. Retro studios/Nintendo should've done better with this character period.

From Samus's view, why bother speaking?
She's been through the ringer, enough times to know what needs to be done.
Just point the way and off she goes.
Better she saves her breath.

The problem is that they're trying to have their cake and eat it too in this game. You have characters in prime 4 that are talking to samus and asking her stuff and she says nothing. It dosen't work when you have characters talking to her and they act like she's an a.i robot when in previous games it's clear she can talk. It's lazy and bad writing to write her this way and to not develop her character.

I'm just over mute protagonists especially as an already established character. It's adds nothing to the game while being incredibly distracting in the times there's other conversations going on around them. Talking sparingly? Ok. Never talking? Fuck that.

I feel like they're trying to tell a cinematic story in a way but when you choose to make her completely mute in terms of no voice acting and no dialog then it simply dosen't work. You can't have characters talking to her and make her mute when in previous games you've established she can talk. If samus was a mute protagonist since the first game in the metroid series then it'd make sense, but she hasn't been you know.

and if she spoke, ya'll bitches would be complaining about how non-Metroid-y it is.

dumb fucks

I don't like mute protagonists either tbh. The only way it can possibly work is in persona or something when you get a boatload of dialog to choose from.

This is part of the problem with having NPC's in the first place. The developers clearly have a vision for Samus as a silent, stoic protagonist, but this becomes awkward when there are other characters addressing her and she's not allowed to respond.

she is a badass woman, an one woman "army" thats is supposedly to work in isolation and not with a bunch of retards from the Federation and thats why she been silent works great, what i do its imagine that everytime someone speaks with her she is rolling her eyes wanting to shoot them in the face, it helps a lot.

Also if these are the guys of Federation i wonder how much of a threat space pirates really are.

I wouldn't blame her for shooting them in the face cause the dialog for them is horrific haha.

There should be a lore reason as to why she doesn't speak or this just looks dumb, indeed.

It wouldn't hurt she has some kind of personality. She's a woman only by name. This is not "stoicism", it is literal dumbness.

don't you have enough interactive movies with out ruining Metroid as well?

Very bad argument. HORNET is a stoic character, with recognizable traits, personal goals, motivations and a dramatic arc.

It's a question of having good writers. Feels like sorcery nowadays, huh?

I'm not sure it's trolling but he was talking about this in another thread.
The problem is that nintendo fans keep defending games like this with shit stories and shit writing and so Nintendo puts 0 effort into having good characters anymore and making interesting stories. Games like metroid, zelda, fire emblem, etc deserve much better writing than what they're given.
I was never drawn to the franchises he talks about because of good stories or characters. It was the gameplay. The story and characters were incidental to my enjoyment of the game.

I don't need to connect to Samus or Link. Metroid Prime 4 wouldn't be better if the companions were better written— they shouldn't be there regardless. The game don't need to be God of Warified.

The silent protagonist only works if youre active in cutscenes, ie half life style of story telling

Otherwise watching fully animated cutscenes with marvel giggle humor and the main character saying nothing does look rather silly

Its also not a train smash though, if the writing is shit like most games then its probably better they keep their traps shut

I played fire emblem path of radiance on gamecube and breaking dawn on wii and I loved both of them alot 'path of radiance more tbh' and too me Nintendo's writing has gone downhill it feels like as the generations have gone on. I feel like franchises like metroid, zelda, and the newer fire emblems 'haven't played them but the sub reddit seemed mixed' should get more developed writing. You're trying to tell an epic tale with link but the writing surrounding him barebones and subpar. You're trying to tell a story in metroid prime 4 with companions, and characters chatting with samus and she dosen't speak even though in prior entries she's shown she can 'why'. It's just frustrating.

Nice! Another "Let's Shit On The New Metroid" thread!

Keep it up boys. I wanna see at least another two by tomorrow night.

Christ get some new material 🙄

Edit: Try and make the thread titles as retardedly long as this one too please

She's a loner and a hardass. She doesn't want nor need to speak. She knows what she has to do and gets it done.

It works incredibly well in a series that is all about isolation and solo exploration. Dread actually gave her just one breif speaking moment. One line. And it carried so much more weight and gavitas because of her usual stoic silence.

I'd much rather have a protagonist who is silent and conveys their character through actions than the Joss Whedon inspired quippy Marvel trademarked snark and "banter" that 99% of protagonists have these days.

Besides Other M isn't she generally a silent protagonist? I distinctly remember people being peeved when they made her talk and express her own feelings in that game.

They gave her dialog in metroid fusion as well and had her express herself through text. But in terms of voice acting it's been few and far between besides other M.

Best decision they made, tbh. Listen to the rest of the cast and then realize how stupid she would sound. Nintendo is just the latest victim of the "modern audience" voice acting and dialogue.

You're saying that, but I think this is the first Metroid thread aside from the recent review and OT ones

Then again, maybe I'm just blind

It's a cycle.
Why is she talking?
Why does she not talk?

I do agree they could have found a medium though. She has one line in Dread and it's such a badass moment, they should have done that there here where she occasionally says something badass. It's a little weird to introduce NPCs who are talking to her, ask her questions and she's just completely silent.

That being said, I am still enjoying the game quite a bit, it's just nice to have a Metroid game again because there's really not a whole of games quite like it.

That's mainly an issue for people watching playthroughs.

As someone who is actually playing the game, I think this was the right choice.

Really hate posts/threads from folks who are basing everything they say about a game off of watching other people play. Youtube/twitch is not a substitute for actually playing games.

I put LakeofBoredom's mojo bullshit thread and the "what do you wanna see outta 'troid" threads there too since they just became new houses to bitch about the new one.

That's me though. I know you aren't a fan. I can't fully judge yet since I'm still early, BUT I do see where the dislike comes from.
