San Francisco Gaming Landmarks

I'm heading to San Francisco for a couple days next week and was wondering if there are any good import/used game shops, arcades, or just places I should check out. I know there used to be a Sega place of some sort, but I can't remember exactly what it was.

So anyway, can anyone recommend good places to go for games?

Angel Island, Tommy's Joint, and stay away from pier 39!

I'm not big on arcades anymore, so I only know of one in the city (on Pier 39 I think). The import game shop I visit is in Burlingame, about five miles south of San Francisco and right off the 101. Called Network Video.

Yeah...that's great and all...but I was looking for arcades, game shops, etc.

You're going to the greatest city on earth and want to visit a game shop? Booo! If you goto Tommy's Joint, I'll tell you the good import shops and stuff like that. If you're going to come to my city at least visit it. :)

There's a decent arcade near Broadway. And there are nudie bars there too. So. There's that.

San Francisco is pretty dismal from an Arcade / Import Game shop standpoint nowadays.

There are only about 2 locations for arcades left worth visiting.
1. There are a couple of Namco run arcades in Pier 39. This used to be worth visiting in the mid 90's as they would get a lot of the deluxe versions straight from japan (i.e. the full size ridge racer where you sat in a real miata, tokyo wars, 6 player galaxian 3 theatre, etc). I never see anything like that there anymore though, and for me its not worth wading through all the tourists to bother visiting.

2. There are two arcades in the Metreon. One full size arcade, and another small batch of games outside the theatre. This is a pretty typical run of the mill arcade, with the typical favorites (initial d, tekken, ddr, etc). Dont expect to find any oddities like Beatmania / Guitar Freaks / Shooter games etc. Last time I went they did have a classic game section though.

All the import game shops in SF are gone now. The only 2 left to my knowledge in the vicinity are Network Video in Burlingame (about 20 minutes south of SF) and Users Side in San Jose (45 minutes south)

Also Chinatown and Japantown are worthless from a gaming standpoint, dont bother. If you want to go for toys and anime they do a good job, just dont go looking for games, as you wont find anything.

I thought the broadway arcade went out of business? It was definitely gone last time I checked. Unless you are talking about Bonkers which is that strange hole in the wall on the 2nd floor full of broken shit.

Relax, I'm seeing the other stuff too. It's just that where I live (Minneapolis) is so completely devoid of anything resembling a good game shop, that I was hoping San Francisco - which is in the heart of the gaming industry - might have something worth checking out.

Metreon: corner of 4th and Mission

Riptide: Pier 39

Bonkers: 483 Pine st

Wasn't there a Namcoland and a Sega place at Pier 39 too...?

The Metreon has the Walk of Game. :lol

Network Video is just like shopping online (everything in glass cases), except at 150% of the price and with the extra bonus of cigarette-smell.

Arcades suck. Why are you considering spending your time in the most beautiful city on the west coast in darkened rooms? Doesn't it get dark enough in Minnesota? Go to the pier and watch the seals. Eat some overpriced crabcakes. Watch a Giants game if you can. The game industry may be based in San Francisco, but they shop at EB just like all the other schlubs.

Golfland in Sunnyvale (45 mins south ofSF) is where it used to be at. Capcom and Namco both used to put their arcade games on test there.

Broadway arcade is closed. RIP

Don't diss Bonkers. It's a lunch-time saving grace for anyone stuck working downtown.

Museo de Mechanque (sp?) is a must see. Features vintage arcade and novelty machines from a hundred years ago, as well as um Aerosmith's Revolution X machine. It was housed in the Cliff House, but moved to Fisherman's Wharf, by Tarantino's and the new Boudin bread place. There's EB Games nearby too.

Hey, I just got back. I ate lunch at Tommy's Joint, but didn't feel like screaming "GAF REPRESENT!" ;) Great place, with very interesting atmosphere. I was there on Sunday the 18th.

I did all the other typical touristy stuff while in SF: Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, Sausilito, etc. What a great city!

I actually found some cool game shops near the University while I was in Seattle the other day (last part of my trip). I picked up some old Turbografx games and a Wonderswan.

Is the Musee Mecanique still open? That place was awesome when I last visited. It's on the becah (Cliff House, I think) and houses a bunch of antique coin-operated "arcade" games and nickelodeons from the turn of the century. It's really cool to check out, even if it's not specifically videogame related.

Note: This thread is old and was bumped AFTER he completed his trip. No point in recommending anything further.

I believe this news!

User's Side in SJ is a fantastic store though. Their prices are pretty good for an import store, although they don't have quite the amount of selection as far as older titles
