These guys definitely don't deserve the stuff they have. I find it fascinating that as human, we're the most intelligent species on this planet, yet many of us choose to not use it and choose nonsensical dogma to the point of killing others over it instead.

Shit like this makes me want to abandon any respect and courtesy I have for religion.
Fuck these people and their backwards medieval ways.

God doesn't really NEED anything. The personal zen is for our own benefit. But that never prevented people from trying to sacrifice lambs and children to gods to curry favor. They want to be all "holy" and shit.

So you may want to attack the people doing the crazy shit, instead of attacking the concept of God. Maybe attack their concept of God, or interpretation of propriety and devotion.

Religion? There's absolutely nothing in Islam that tells you to behead someone for witchcraft or sorcery.

Saudi is just backwards as fuck, and has a lot of cultural bullshit. I've lived in Muslim countries for years, this kind of thing is just as shocking to people there as people here.
The burka is another example of something taken to the extreme, when the religion never once demanded it.

It's the way of thinking, and I realize that a big portion of it is cultural as well - The complete decoupling of one's moral system from pragmatism and empathy. When peoples' concept of right and wrong is totally arbitrary and based on religious dogma or ancient cultural concepts, they're capable of doing some pretty disgusting things to their fellow human beings without batting an eyelash. It's a failure of reason and natural human emotion.

Oh dear Lord....

What was it that Matt Damon said in Syriana about the Middle Eastern people?

Woah. When was the last time the Catholic Church, Christians, or sane Muslims, beheaded someone for witchcraft? Don't lump us all in with these wackos (Saudi theocracy) who actually are cutting people's heads off.

We have a topic a day on Saudi and their various issues...I'm surprised people can still be stunned by any news coming from the country...

Again someone dies because it is so difficult for people to comprehend that there is no magic, no sorcery, no angels, no djinns, no ghosts, no supernatural nonsense whatsoever.

When will the world drop all the silly nonsense they believe in like religion and just accept science.

Religion is the opiate of the masses.

Some of the replies in here are retarded. How can some of you think this incident is representative of the entire country? That's like a woman getting beheaded in Florida and people abroad ask "Why the fuck do we associate with Americans?"

I'm not excusing this stupid incident, but please STFU with the generalizations.

Yeah right, because we're more superstitious than our neighbours...
The difference is in the rulers, not the people

If Americans lived under a system of government that beheaded people for witchcraft, without any GIGANTIC SUSTAINED public outcry it would be TOTALLY apt to call someone out for that shit.

This isn't a criminal incident, but an execution resulting from a government policy based on superstition and irrational beliefs. It's insane, immoral, and I do not feel obliged to STFU.

Is the woman in Florida being beheaded by the US government? For being a witch? Because that's what is happening here.

It wouldn't be an international news story if she was murdered by some random person.

You're right. If it were in America, she'd be electrocuted for a crime she probably didn't commit. But she'd probably be a minority instead.

So your point is..? This is still fucked up and wrong, and not in the same way as the situation you're describing.

You must be new around here. I suggest you check your ignorance and prejudices at the door, they can get you banned here real fast.

I'm not focusing on the incident as much as I am on the generalisations about the country it happened in. Terrible, disturbing, and often irrational shit happens in every country every day. That isn't to say the whole damn country is fucked up.

If there's a lynching in Georgia, there will be public outcry for about a week then the media will move on to something else. That doesn't mean all of America is fucked up and ass backwards.

^ Again, do you not realize that "a lynching in Georgia" would be an extrajudicial killing and is not something that would be done by the US government, according to US laws in the year 2011? So totally different and not at all in any reasonable way comparable to the Saudi government beheading people for witchcraft?

You're right. If it were in America, she'd be electrocuted for a crime she probably didn't commit. But she'd probably be a minority instead.

Okay, except in America people don't get the death penalty for reading palms and horoscopes and shit like that, capital punishment is only for those convicted of murder.

If the US executes a disproportionate number of minorities or some people who may be innocent, no one here is defending that, so it seems strange to bring it up in a thread about the Saudi Arabian government beheading people for witchcraft.

As for minorities, note that most of the getting death sentences for witchcraft are not Saudis but foreigners (not that minorities who are Saudi are treated great, see what is currently happening to the Shi'a minority along the gulf) who are either working there or on pilgrimage.
As for innocent people being put to death, note that the Saudi police got one of the supposed witches to make a confession by telling him he could go back to Lebanon if he did.

Yeah but all of Saudi Arabia IS fucked up and backwards, please show me where this is NOT the case. AS A SINGLE EXAMPLE among dozens, women have the same authority as a child, cannot be alone in public without a male guardian, and cannot make ANY decisions for themselves whatsoever. That is NOT an isolated incident, that is WHAT IT'S LIKE TO LIVE IN SAUDI ARABIA, a kingdom with fucked up backwards laws and practices that are absolutely unacceptable under any circumstance, and this incident is merely another indicator that such is the case.

Alright then, where in Saudi Arabia can one legally practice sorcery?

Wow...you're kidding... The country hasn't gotten over lynchings that happened decades ago. Plus there was that guy that got run over by a redneck a few months ago, don't think we've forgotten that.

The point I'm making is that capital punishment, much like beheading in Saudi Arabia, is still irrational and inhumane. The reasons behind it are moot.

Moreover, you list two cases. One of which was about a Saudi woman. How can most of the people getting death sentences be foreigners? Do you have more data?

Also, how is coercion conducive to your argument? It happens everywhere any law is upheld.

Degrees exist. What goes on in Saudi Arabia is much worse than in the US.

Why would you have respect for religion? Courtesy, sure, people should be able to practice whatever belief they want in the event that it's not hurting other people--but respect? I don't have respect for the beliefs of random dude at the insane asylum who babbles nonsense, I ain't gonna respect the beliefs of ignorant religious people either.

There are four witchcraft cases mentioned in the article, out of the four, only one is a Saudi:
A Sudanese man was executed in September on similar charges, despite calls led by Amnesty for his release.

In 2007, an Egyptian national was beheaded for allegedly casting spells to try to separate a married couple.
Ali Sabat was the host of a popular Lebanese TV show in which he predicted the future and gave advice.
He was arrested by religious police on sorcery charges while on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia in 2008.

It sucks to think how many once cool, unique, or mighty civilizations suck these days because of Islam. Persia, Egypt, Arabia, Malaya, and Mesopotamia, just to name a few.

a lynching would be prosecuted and those responsible would be jailed or executed if a jury of their peers deems it so. the Saudi government executed a woman for FUCKING SORCERY, SORCERY!!!!! show me the videos or articles of the Saudi populace protesting this or showing outrage.

Irrational, inhuman actions deliberately carried out as punishment by the government of a (mostly) civlized nation are even worse than the same actions if they were done by vigilantes or criminals. It means someone in a position of power, someone who should know better, made it happen.

Personally, I think our culture of not chopping off people's heads for imaginary crimes should respect that woman's culture of chopping off people's heads for imaginary crimes. That dead person is probably fine with being dead if it's in line with the values she was taught growing up.

I must have missed that. I still don't know if four cases are enough to state a majority being foreigners.

EDIT: I have just researched. It seems there were more beheadings of both Saudis and migrant workers from Asia.

Yeah but all of Saudi Arabia IS fucked up and backwards, please show me where this is NOT the case. What you are doing is using your society as a template for what is and isn't fucked up. That's ignorant. I will provide places in Saudi Arabia that aren't fucked up if you can show me places in America or Mexico that aren't fucked up. Weird fucked up shit has happened and probably will continue to happen in most countries. Regardless of their social and political structure.

Again, this is making an argument by completely and totally ignoring that there are degrees of something can exist.

Also, there's nothing wrong with using more successful, advanced, and better run societies as templates.
