I saw this gem of a flick at a friends house the other night & was pleasantly surprised & totally shocked. What starts out as a quirky sci-fi romp, quickly dissolves into a horrid, gut wretching psychological-thriller, with a twisted black sense of humour & eccentric, yet totally loveable characters at its heart.
This movie defies any sort of categorization, it's a smorgasbord of genres, its like the X-Files meets Oldboy, meets Se7en, meets Signs, meets Bad Taste, directed all by. Miike Takashi, Chan-wook Park, Michael Mann, Jean-Pierre Jeunet & Peter Jackson.
The film is beautifully shot, with a dingy subterranean, green & blue tint as the focus throughout the film, aided by some very imaginative & slick visual effects.
The acting is equally as impressive, with the actors effortlessly accounting for the films continously fluctuating shifts between tones. You might recognize the superb Shin Ha-Kyun as the films lead, from JSA, Sympathy for Mr.Vengeance & other Korean films.
This is the third completely mind blowing & totally mesmerizing Korean flick, that I've seen in the last 6 months. I don't know what's going on over there, but I want more and I strongly urge to see this film, you will not be dissapointed.
