SCEF president: PS3 launch details at E3

Straight from the mouth of SCEF president, George Fornay. The following is from Figaro:

'Le dispositif de lancement sera précisé en mai, lors du Salon mondial des jeux vidéo E3, à Los Angeles. Inutile de s'exciter : la PSP avait été annoncée pour mars et elle est arrivée en septembre dernier, sans que cela affecte les ventes.'

the device of launching will be specified in May, at the time of the world Living room of the video games E3, in Los Angeles. Useless to excite itself: the PSP had been announced for March and it arrived last September, without that affecting the sales.'

Euro PS3 --> 2007 for sure.
Great ,Sony ,Great ....

The second part of the sentence was meant for you ;)

Anyway, is he talking about Europe launch, or western, or all? Western announcements at E3 would make sense, but I'd guess we should be hearing about the Japan launch sooner than that.. (?)

Probably Euro - at least judging by the second part of that sentence.

Who knows? What happened to the 'rumoured' PS3 festival in February? :lol

Man, I hope launch details are all we'll have to wait for. Im anxious to see whats brewing with the PS3. I love my 360 but I'd be lying if I wasn't anticipating the PS3 launch.

I don't get why Sony keeps saying Spring, Spring, Spring and then still release it later... They're just bashing themselves..

Hype and hysteria. Average joe hears that the PS3 is coming out in spring and gets hyped for it, maybe even skips the Xbox 360. Spring comes, no PS3 and life goes on for that average joe as he doesn't mind a delay and just keeps waiting for the godlike PS3, true savior of the next gen.

Only the internet forum gamer minority keeps daily tabs on game and console release dates & delays.

how the hell do you get march '07 from that?

we didn't even get Xbox 360 launch timings at E3 last year, and it still launched before the the end of 2005 in most places.

Rumoured? I thought it was confirmed (see: that timeline picture from a Sony meeting + Sony people talking about the event). :(

For gods sake SONY, this starvation of information is getting ridiculous.

Personally I expect that this relates to the European launch, coming from SCEF as it does.

what do you care? everyone knows the Vennt has no PS3s...

no wait, that's the wrong way round isn't it? doh.

As long as get a steady flow of news between now and May I'll be fine. He only mentioned that the launch details would be in May. That leaves some hope that we'll still seem some games and tidbits on Sonys online "plans".

let's hope he's talking for europe only.
In other news today is 27 of january and still no official word from Sony for the Februray festival.

Fast forward to E3 2006

"You might have wondered why there is no information on PS3 for a whole year."

"Today I will reveal the big secret of PS3. It had to be kept secret!"

"You see this PS3 in my hands?"

"The secret is that it's empty!"

"Thanks for the money!"

I'm sure we'll have a lot of information between now and E3. Obviously a pre-E3 Japanese launch would necessitate that, but even if it were in May itself, or June, I don't expect Sony to wait till E3 to crank things up for that launch.

They announced the release date for PS2 in Usa (and Europe too?) at E3 2000.With the console just launched in Japan.
Or people still think PS3 will arrive in USA in Spring? :D

Please god let it truly have region code shared by US & Japan PLEASE. :D

If you're basing that on the Blu-ray region coding, don't get your hopes up. That only applies to movies AFAIK.

If all this hush hush and waiting is due to a (slight) spec upgrade, then I'm all for it. If it's not, then meh...

Nintendo UK staff would "probably throttle me" if there was a DS redesign to promote, says general manager David Yarnton, who also spoke of the company's efforts to win over the trade.

This Vennt doesn't even have a PS2 anymore, small accident with my PS2, a bottle of motor oil and a house move saw to that, Xbox and PSP have been my gaming mainstays for a while. (Or were until I bust my wrist.)

I sure hope the pricing thread is as good as the 360's. I doubt it :/.

The PS3 price thread will be the biggest, most bombastic thread in GAF history. Count on it.

Good question...but I think most people are used Europe not getting the newest toy on the block until a few months after Christmas, so they figure why set themselves up for disappointment?

I think it's totally dependant on how many units they can crank out...I think Sony will try hard as hell to get it out in Europe in the fall, along with North America. But with the expected demand on both sides of the Pacific, it's going to be tough.

I think a difference between 360's lack of supply right now and PS3's potential lack of supply down the line is that the latter could drive people looking for a next gen machine right into Microsoft's arms (there's no real alternative to the 360 on the market at present). But if there's nothing at all in Europe before Christmas, they might just grab the 360 to pass the time anyway.

Anyway yeah, this E3 tidbit is clearly about Europe, and possibly the US. PS3 info in Japan will be flowing long before then, if the system itself hasn't been released by then already.

We never got a solid set of specs to begin with am I wrong? I dont think we'd know if they've been bumped up or not. Isn't the RSX still under wraps for the most part? If anything I'd like to see a bump up in RAM.

The specs given at E3, particularly regarding the GPU, are more comprehensive than people often latterly give them credit for. Whilst we didn't get a breakdown of the pipeline configuration in RSX, for example, we did get a figure for shader ops per second etc. which suggested that perhaps the spec for RSX was locked at the time. Or perhaps that was their "minimum target". Who knows.

Upgrades aren't impossible, but I would not expect it.

I'm starting to lose faith in that train of thought now. I mean every freaking day I'm losing more and more hope about the Feb event or even knowing what the flying f*ck a PS3 game looks like until E3. :(

All specs are "as is" I'd assume, but yes, the details about the inner workings of the RSX have been very vauge.

Well we've seen games (whether you're happy to accept what you've seen at face value or remain sceptical until they're closer to final is another matter, though).

Think about it, though. Even if Japan was launching in May or June, you really think Sony would stay quiet until E3? You need a greater run-in time than that.

Behold the beauty of PS3 hype. People are CERTAIN that the PS3 will blow away the competition in graphics, physics, and AI yet no one outside of the game developers themselves have played any PS3 software. I don't care about MGS 4 demos, or Killzone 'target renders' I want solid proof that the PS3 will produce higher quality graphics than the 360. Till then PS3 is vaporware.
