SCEF president: PS3 launch details at E3

I'm no insider, but I DO have several friends at IBM. We were talking about the PS3, and one who worked on the design of Cell told me that Sony is going to make certain they don't repeat MS supply problems. It will be available a little later than expected but supply will be a lot more plentiful than the 360 was. Now, whether this is BS or not I have no idea. I personally expect a June Japan launch, with North America in the early Fall and Europe near X-Mas. I guess we'll find out at E3.

I do think that it will be out by the end of the year in all territories because the BRD player penetration is extremely important to Sony.

it should also be noted to Blu-Ray RECORDERS made by samsung are selling for $500.

Sony's will not have writing capabilities, thus making it cheaper, and other components of the system will control video playback and misc. tasks that are traditionally taken care of in a drive's own chipset. It won't be as expensive as everyone thinks.

I'd like for you to be right, but I have no faith in the idea that Sony will not screw over European gamers once again. I concur with the other people in this thread who think the Euro PS3 launch will be 2007 for sure. If I'm wrong, I'll be happily surprised (but even if I am wrong, I still bet there'll be a hefty delay between US and European launch dates).

Have any of you lot pre-ordered the PS3 yet.

I'm expected low yields, mental hype and total ebay madness. I would suggest if you want one to pre-order well early.

Pre-order and get shafted by the retailers who still may not deliver until 1-2 months after launch?

No f'ing way.

I'll buy one off-the-shelf, when they're available on the shelf.

Anything can happen in chip manufacturing, but Cell's built in redundancy (if 1 of 8 SPEs goes bad the chip is still good to go) could give it a significant yield advantage compared to the problems MS is likely dealing with Xenon at the moment. RSX is also said to have some aspect of redundancy in its design, although its unclear to what extent as of yet.

Did anyone who preorder early get shafted though? I thought it was just those that didn't preorder early enough.

I don't think any UK stores have even started taking preorders yet (I just checked GAME.net and Amazon.co.uk and neither of them have listings for it).

I seem to remember hearing about some guy who preordered a 360 in August from Amazon only to be told later that he wouldn't be getting it till February, so yeah, there definitely were people getting shafted.

IF this is true then all is forgiven to Sony. Hell they can miss the spring date for Japan and I wouldn't care as long as their supply issues don't suck as bad as MS's!!!

I do know the Cell chips have already gone into production and yields are great. It's rumored through my MS friends (of all the places to find information), that Sony is going to start mass PS3 production in late February - early March, and that yields of the RSX have been surprisingly good. No idea though, because Sony isn't telling anyone. The NDA's on the software side of the house should start expiring soon so we should get a better idea of where the software is at.

Sure are a LOT less leaks about the PS3 than there were about the 360 - I'm expecting Sony to come out and dominate E3 again this year, just like they blindsided MS last year. And E3 is only a little more than three months away. I'm just wondering if we will hear anything prior to E3 (I doubt it, unless the machine launches in Japan prior)

All my "sources" are on the networking and manufacturing side of the house, because I have a lot of contacts from work in Cisco, Juniper, MS, Intel, etc. I know NOTHING about gaming development or software (sucks)

I preordered my 360 the same week it was announced. I got mine on launch and I plan to do the same with the PS3. The exact day its announced I'll call/go to gamestop to preorder.

My local GS isn't taking preorders until an announcement is made.

Same here. I guess I'm holding on to this money till May

Well, this is only the drive, not a standalone recorder/player. Quite a big difference. That said, it is a reasonable price.
