Scientists say NASA cutting missions to Mars

Shave off a little of the defense budget.

Just a little tiny bit.

And it would triple the NASA budget.

*sigh* why is it so hard?

In NASA's defense, if it was between the James Webb Telescope and a Mars Mission I would choose the telescope as well, but its disgusting that we can't do both.

Russia, China and others countries needs to take the ball and go for it, maybe then USA Gov. will start funding NASA and we'll get another space race, i hope in my lifetime :(

Why spend money ruining another planet when we can focus on spending all of it on means to ruin what we have right here?

Yes you can. It doesn't even cost that much relative to other spending, and has significant economic returns from the technology invented.

In practical political terms you can't because if you do actually cut other forms of spending then you have to take it out of somebody else's chunk and those people are gonna complain and talk about how important their programs are. My principled position is we should fund Nasa and not pay for it.

Humans aren't Ipads. We can do multiple things at once.

Planets aren't sentient beings. They are just compressed bits of matter that are there for harvesting.

The US got fat, bored, and lazy. I'd love to see anyone step up.

Going to the moon was an incredible achievement of mankind. Who cares if the first people on Mars end up being Chinese, I just want to see it in my life. Maybe it will get us to wave our Chinese made American flags and care about space again.

Absolutely agree. I don't care who gets to Mars/returns to the Moon first, as ultimately it's a big jump for man as a whole.

I feel like we have this whole song and dance about the woes of US budget/lack of vision on politicians/Chinese in space at least once a week. Each week the posts read as if the wound is fresh and raw.

maybe we're just coming to the tragic realization that humanity is doomed to die on this planet?

lets say we do get to mars... THEN what?

these planets in our solar system arent inhabitable. unless we all think that we should be developing new atmospheres for them also.

I agree with their decision of maintaining the Webb telescope. Ideally we could focus on both, but I guess the government doesn't think space exploration or science in general is very important.

If they can find a way to to have sustainable energy, air, food, etc. resources, there are at least a couple habitable spots in the Solar System that aren't Earth.

Building habitable colonies is a much more practical solution than terraforming. :P

This is the right choice but sucks overall it sucks. NASA needs new management for sure but the US government needs to be gutted.

A lot of people forget about the moons of our Solar System for a potential place to colonize and only focus on the planets. Jupiter's moons Europa, Ganymede and Callisto are all thought to have liquid water underneath their surface. Callisto is often called the most habitable place in the Solar System besides Earth because of its low amounts of radiation. NASA has said that they expect a manned space mission to Callisto by 2040, which is pretty cool.
