Martin Scorsese is lining up The Invention of Hugo Cabret as his next. Based on a children's book about the titular character who lives in the walls of a Paris train station in the 1930s. It also involves a mystery surrounding Hugo's father and a robot, according to plot descriptions. The book was optioned, then written by John Logan (The Last Samurai) after The Departed did well on an Oscar night, once upon a time.

Scorsese was attached, then left to pursue his Silence project, which fell apart, bringing him back to Hugo Cabret. Now, it's time to populate his movie with familiar faces of those clamoring to work with Scorsese.

In a surprise move, Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't seem to be involved, though he's off making Viking movies with producer Graham King, who is also producing The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

We have learned that Sacha Baron Cohen has been approached by the Hugo Cabret team to play the part of the station manager in the film and Ben Kingsley - who can currently be seen under Scorsese's direction in Shutter Island - is in talks to join the cast as George Melies, the famous silent filmmaker, who has something to do in this fictional tale.

Well Kingsley can only make it better, and Coen can only make it worse. What to do...

Sacha Baron Cohen is a great actor. Whether or not you like his humor, his schtick basically requires him to be in character in a very deep way; Sweeney Todd and various other roles have proved that he can act very well.

Edit: Also, I second the call for Roosevelt. Leo as Roosevelt = awesome.

WTF? Silence fell apart? I thought it was just delayed until after this. It had the potential to be his best film in years and the cast was too good to be true.....I guess it really was then.

This movie sounds pretty interesting I guess. They cast the two child leads. The female is played by Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl!!!) and the orphan is thankfully not Leonardo DiCaprio. Instead it's some kid from Nanny McPhee.

Maybe Cohen will get some props instead of always being thought as the guy who wrestled naked with a hairy nude dude.

Scorsese confirmed to be shooting the film (that in itself it noteworthy) in 3D!

Can't wait to see what Scorsese pulls off.

Martin Scorsese is taking the plunge into 3D.
The helmer will employ the technology for his next project, "The Invention of Hugo Cabret."

Sony, which is distributing the GK Films-produced pic, has dated the film for Dec. 9, 2011.

Based on Brian Selznick's best-selling children's book, story is set in 1930s Paris and centers on a 12-year-old orphan named Hugo, who lives in a train station and must finish what his late father started by solving the mystery of a broken robot.

Project, which will begin lensing in London in June, marks Scorsese's first foray into kid lit as well as his debut 3D film.

John Logan, who wrote Scorsese's "The Aviator," adapted the screenplay.

Glad he's back with Logan as well.

This is going to be interesting as hell. A Scorsese sci-fi film shot in 3D. Hype hype hype!

Emily Mortimer and Michael Stuhlbarg (fuckin' a!) join the cast.

The folks at Heat Vision Blog just broke word that Martin Scorsese's next project now has two more stars attached to it. Scorsese and Johnny Depp, amongst others, will produce an adaptation of The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Brian Selznick's best-selling children's novel. The two stars in question are Emily Mortimer, who just worked with Scorsese in Shutter Island, and Michael Stuhlbarg, who delivered a commanding lead performance in A Serous Man.

Selznick's book follows the story of a young orphan that lives in a secret underground tunnel system in Paris. From there he goes on a series of adventures involving an ancient robot, a toy shop and George Melies, one of the most important early filmmakers and most commonly known for his silent movie A Trip to the Moon. The fact that the story leads back to Melies is, if I had to speculate, why Scorsese is interested in the project, he being such a voracious cinephile and historian.

Stuhlbarg and Mortimer join a staggering cast of voice actors that includes Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, Christopher Lee and Ray Winstone. With a little luck, someone will point Scorsese towards a cine-related superhero movie he can produce.

Martin Scorsese is ''passionate'' about using 3-D technology for 'Hugo Cabret'.

Thelma Schoonmaker - who is working with the iconic director on new movie 'Hugo Cabret' as his editor - admits Scorsese was keen to shoot the project in 3-D because it creates a different feel to a movie.

She said: "He's always been passionate about 3-D and, as a matter of fact, we've started screening older 3-D movies. We looked at 'Avatar' and 'Alice in Wonderland'# then we looked at the older ones, and we love them.

"Hitchcock's 'Dial M For Murder' in 3-D is a whole other movie. There's only one really dramatic shot that is 3-D in the sense that most people think of it - Grace Kelly's being strangled, the camera's behind her, and she reaches back for the scissors. And that's a beautiful 3-D Shot."

However, she also confirmed the decision to shoot 'Hugo Cabret' using the technique was something Scorsese thought about for a long time.

She revealed to Empire: "We'll have to screen, I think, earlier, maybe an entire scene and see whether the 3-D is working properly, because Scorsese talks a lot about the philosophy of 3-D, 'Why are you using, it, how do you use it?' Which is typical of him. He thinks very deeply about these type of things."

'Hugo Cabret' - which stars Jude Law, Sacha Baron Cohen, Chloe Moretz and Sir Ben Kingsley - is due for cinematic release in December 2011.

Fuck off with the 3d bullshit! And wasnt he really against 3D at some point? :lol I remember reading an interview with him a couple of months ago where he was blasting modern studios and how most of his movies would had been compromised by gimmicks like 3D if he had been born during this generation.

This is the most interesting part to me:

"In a surprise move, Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't seem to be involved, though he's off making Viking movies with producer Graham King"

Does this mean the Viking movie with Mel is still going forward (presumably w/o mel)?

Old story. This thread was started in March.

Erm, he's actually been a vocal 3D supporter since praising AVATAR at the Globes.

First set photos - nothing terribly exciting.

Incredibly Naive
I love Scorcese, so it's hard not to be excited for this. First pictures don't have much going on yet, but I have a lot of faith in this.

Yeah he can act, but the best part of Sweeney Todd was the end credits.

and if we're talking performances Depp was better

Strange how the shooting goes over schedule but the release date is moved forward. But I'm not complaining!

Seriously, after the Ghost Protocol trailer released today, followed by War Horse, I was wondering when Hugo Cabret was going to release to complete the trifecta of my most anticipated.

Glad to see you're in tune to that as well, Plainview.

Most definitely! We sometimes don't click, but I'm insanely anticipating those three films. What else are you going crazy for, just Tintin? You can add Dragon Tattoo and then a bunch of smaller films to that list for me.

Yep Dragon Tattoo is there, but we already have a trailer for that so I wasn't craving it as much.

As for what else I'm anticipating later in the year that we haven't mentioned here..

We Bought a Zoo, Heroes of Nanking, Melancholia and Another Earth (should Searchlight decide to release it wider). Though I wouldn't say I'm going crazy for any of these. But they're all firmly on my radar.

Yikes, that poster looks like it should be for a Zemeckis picture.

Looks like the lame name change is official.

trailer reaction from IMDb, misspellings and all:
Wasn't what I was expecting the movie to be, but reminds me of an interesting mix of Oliver Tiwst and The Polar Express. Probably will be the first Scorsese movie I wont be running out to see opening night, but look forward to it non the less. Didn't particularily like the Legends of the Guardians trailer music they used either.

Its not mocap, right?

EDIT:
Ok, total brainfart. I see those pictures now.

It's cool to see Scorcese try his hand at something completely new for him but holy crap this just feels so wholly uninteresting to me (along with War Horse). They're both from some of the best working directors but mehh.

I'll surely see both in theaters though. I'm not a fan of 3d format but I'm really interested to see what Scorcese can do with it.

Name change is awful (along with the John Carter of Mars one, are audiences scared of adventurous titles? I'm amazed they kept the full TinTin one)

They didn't really, the US title is just "The Adventures of Tintin"

oh snap, I thought audiences would be wary of the "secret of the unicorn" subtitle. But at least they didn't just rename it as "TinTin"
