Martin Scorsese has confirmed that he will work with Robert De Niro for a ninth time on crime drama The Irishman.

Speaking at BAFTA's A Life In Pictures Q&A, the Oscar-winning Departed director revealed that the project is currently going through financing, and shooting could begin as early as next year.

De Niro and Scorsese first teamed up for 1973's Mean Streets before further collaborations on Taxi Driver, New York, New York, Raging Bull, The King Of Comedy, Goodfellas and Casino.

The Irishman is based on Charles Brandt's novel I Heard You Paint Houses, which charts the life of union official-turned-mob hitman Frank 'The Irishman' Sheeran.

Scorsese also noted that his Gangs Of New York and Cape Fear screenwriter Steve Zallian is working on the script.

The potential Scorsese/De Niro reunion was first rumoured in September with Al Pacino and Joe Pesci also linked to the project.

Scorsese's next project Hugo Cabret, a 3D children's movie starring Chloe Moretz, Asa Butterfield and Sacha Baron Cohen, is due for release on December 9, 2011

This has been a long gestating project and obviously could join many other Scorsese films on the neverending backburner. However, with Spielberg finally making Lincoln - I'm willing to get my hopes up. The fact that the project is going through financing is a pretty fucking good sign of an impending green light though.

Way to step out of your comfort zone, Scorsese. Maybe this time he'll hire a semi-competent editor.

It's too bad his best film is a remake that's inferior to the original. I'll never understand the love that Scorsese receives.

Taxi Driver isn't a remake.

If you can't watch Taxi Driver and see why it's among the greatest films ever made, then that sucks for you, man. Like, it legitimately makes me sad.

Then you look at Mean Streets, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, and Goodfellas, and I'm just left dumbfounded as to how anybody could NOT think Scorsese was one of the all-time kings of directing.

Anyway, I'd get excited for this, but modern Scorsese doesn't do all that much for me. I think he still has 'it' in him, but he's gotten a bit lazy, artistically speaking, as has de Niro. Maybe this will be a return to form for both of them, but until I see evidence that that's the case, I'm not going to get hyped.

He is like "half-Irish" in every movie he is in...

The Goodfellas' character he played was half-Irish

If he could get Jack Nicholson too, my life would be so much better

Would rather have Silence or the Teddy Roosevelt biopic.

I know I've said this a thousand times, but I've always dreamed of the epic Academy Awards night showdown between Spielberg's Lincoln and Scorsese's Roosevelt pic. More so when Neeson was attached as it was more like fathers fighting with with their favourite kids by their side.

Yes I know Neeson isn't Tom Hanks.

I want him to do another movie that has nothing to do with cops or mobsters and doesn't involve people getting shot.

I liked shutter island and raging bull was nice. I'd like to think that he's not a one trick pony.

Maybe you should view his filmography before commenting on it. Informed opinions can be fun too.

As for your request of Scorsese, you should read up on Hugo Cabret, which comes out next year.

Yeah, those cops and Gangsters shooting everyone in The King Of Comedy really shows how Marty is one dimensional.

Let me guess you've never seen King of Comedy, New York New York, Last Temptation of Chirst, The Aviator, Age of Innocence, Kundan and Bringing out the Dead.

Yep, Scorsese only makes mobster films. :lol

Perfect.

I like it when people stumble out of nowhere and give us their shitty, uninformed opinions about directors they don't like.

"Scorsese a gansta movie har har har, he only does those". Yeah, and Spielberg only does movies about aliens and sci-fi.

Seriously, if you don't have a brain, why don't you shoot yourself in the head, no damage done.

So Hugo Cabret, The Irishman, then maybe Teddy Roosevelt or Silence. Didn't he also have a rumored Frank Sinatra project involving Leo? Is the word on Hugo Cabret good? First I've heard of it.

We get it Scorsese, there are Irish and Italian people.

We get it Spielberg, Jews are people too and everybody hurts.

We get it Malick, trees are pretty and people yearn.

We get it Tarantino, feet are sexy and cinema can save the world.

We get it Hitchcock, voyeurism is exciting.

Man, when will things guys stop trying to draw films from what that know and like? It's like their style is born out of their lives and instead of exploring themes that they are novices at, they just keep fueling their passion projects with ideas and stylistic choices important to them. Lazy assholes.

I'm intrigued based on the cast, but I've felt the same way all decade about Scorsese projects and come away disappointed.

The true mark of a Scorsese film. Sure, he had some decent films to begin his career, but his last tolerable movie came out in the mid-nineties (The Departed doesn't count).

His self-deluded fans are living in the past. I don't even think Scorsese is proud of his recent output. :lol

Except that The Aviator is one of the better movies of the last decade. And only decent films at the start of his career?

You must be trolling.

The Aviator was a bloated mess. Not sure which film you watched. Raging Bull tricked viewers into thinking it was something arty (black and white doesn't make a film creative or artistic, Scorsese), Taxi Driver was alright, but nothing particularly special. Goodfellas was competent enough, but totally forgettable if it weren't for pop culture's unwavering fascination with gangsters. All good enough movies, but can't compete with other, superior movies released around the same time. Nowadays, Scorsese's been reduced to Shutter Island. Of course his earlier films were better. I don't think that can be argued.

Yes, because when someone has differing opinions, they must be trolling. Come off your high horse.

No, no, no. It didn't trick anyone. There were a multitude of reasons to why it was shot in black and white.

And if Taxi Driver isn't particularly special in your eyes, then what is? Just out of curiosity.

Also, After Hours and The King of Comedy (especially) are two of the most underrated films ever made.

Goodfellas was merely competent and Taxi Driver was nothing special eh?

Alright, tell us what movies released at the same time are your measuring sticks for quality.
