Proper writeup coming later, but I picked up the first volume of Scott Pilgrim on a whim (based mostly off the extremely positive attention the release of Volume 2 brought about in the weekly comics thread) and I absolutely love it. At first you're like, "oh, it's just a cute light-hearted love triangle story with various video game references tossed in" but as it progresses you realize it's so much more.

Look, here's how awesome it is. I bought it, read it, and my friend came over. I was doing something, so I told him just to read the first few pages. He ended up reading the entire thing. More people come over and the book is passed around, with two others reading it and thoroughly enjoying it before the night is out. And these folks don't even read comics to begin with.

Since then, three others have given the book a run-through and they all come away singing its praises. If you've got some spare cash laying around, hit up your local comic book shop and see if they've got this baby sitting on their shelves:

I'm also a Scott Pilgrim fanboy and advocate. The first volume was fan-freaking-tastic and full of fun and likeable characters, as well as some neat artwork. O'Malley hasn't done me wrong so far, and I really need to pick up Volume 2.

I recommend his first major graphic novel, Lost at Sea.

Hey Buddy, you pick up v.2 yet? It's out right? I got mine before it hit stores, when Bryan Lee O'Malley was at the MoCCA art fest in NYC a few weeks back. :)

I don't know how you managed such perfect timing, but I just yanked Volume 2 out of my mailbox this morning. Haven't had time to read it yet, but I'm hoping to start in on it after work.

In related news, based off my satisfaction with Scott Pilgrim, I started picking up some other Oni Press titles, namely Love Fights and Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things. Both have proved to be highly enjoyable thus far.

edit: a proper Scott Pilgrim writeup is still forthcoming.

I saw this not too long ago and considered picking it up. Based on your recommendations, I think I will. Thanks.

Fuckin' right! Courtney Crumrin ROCKS, as does Love Fights. There's a CC movie being made too, which is pretty sweet. And Oni Press is generally great. There are some overhyped titles/books that aren't that great (Cheat) but you're generally guaranteed quality when you see that Oni logo.

What really grabbed me about Courtney Crumrin was the cover for the first volume, which you also used for a mix CD cover a few years back. And I remembered you hyping up Love Fights way back when, so I jumped in on that too. Thanks :)

Been meaning to order these. Mal was one of the big players in the early days of internet manga artists, I did a fanart way back for his very first webcomic, and he praised my art a couple of times on OCAD.

Also need to order Sharknife; Corey Lewis/Rey/Churen/Ringo is another fellow artist from back in those days. You may have seen his art in the "Cheap Shots" one-pages at the end of the Street Fighter comics.

Man, I really need to get back into that shit. Coulda been a contenda.

On Wednesday, I picked up the first book on a whim and couldn't put it down. This book definitely lands somewhere in the top ten best independent comics I've ever read. Consider me converted.

And this is coming from a guy who won't go near manga-style (even western style manga) books. I can't wait to pick up the second book tommorrow.
