Scrapped Princess: Yay or Nay?

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Been ages since I watched a show involving capes and swords and sorcery. Looks interesting, so long as it doesn't recycle any teeny breast jokes. I need opinions before I take the plunge.

Also what is Samurai 7? The print ads are attractive, but I know nothing about it, is it an animated rendition of the Kurosawa movie?

Yes, it is an animated rendition of Seven Samurai.................with giant robots (I shit you not).

Ok, I'll be sure to give SP a look now. Just had to make sure I wasn't being lured into some anime crap trap.

Oh and Samurai Champloo is teh awesome right? I've seen a couple random episodes on Adult Swim and haven't made up my mind on whether I like it yet. Haven't felt the instant hook like Bebop, but I feel obligated to give it a further chance just because. Those action bits are great looking.

Yeah, Champloo definitely qualifies as "teh awesome."

Scrapped Princess is Tier 3.5 material...

if you take Cowboy Bebop to be Tier 1 Champloo to be 1.5

Naruto is around 3.5 as well.

Scrapped Princess is pretty entertaining, but it does have many anime cliches that make lower quality anime embarassing and difficult to watch.

Such as big big titties on everyone of their female characters, regardless of age. Some people might see that as a pro... but the heroine is badly dressed 16 year old with DD tits... it's a bit wrong and distracting.

Is it like Cardcaptor Sakura? I'm always looking for more shows like that.

No, it's not like CCS.

If you view CCS and NGE as polar opposites, SC would lie twice as far away from CCS as from NGE.

If you want to check out Samurai 7, a cheap way to do it would be to buy the August '05 Newtype USA (s'got Fafner on the cover). It's got the first episode on it, along with Otogi Zoushi and Gatchaman.

The trailer for Samurai 7 on FMA volume 4 impressed me so much that I went out and ordered the first volume. I'm not a big of samurai anime, but a big fan of Kurosawa's work. I'm sure the addition of robots (and they made Mifune's character a robot) will be hard to swallow at first, but still looking forward to it.

BIG yay to the first half. Second half just gets a "yes".

Can anyone recommend anything that's like Scrapped Princess? Is Twelve Kingdoms the same kind of thing? I don't mean just the medieval setting, but also how it's actually good and doesn't assault you with names of warlords and details of 2000 years of politics.

P.S. Please don't say Grenadier.

speaking as a fantasy medievil warfare and politics fan, scrapped princess starts out good but starts sucking pretty quickly and only continuous to suck more.

no, twelve kingdoms is very much NOT like scrapped princess. It is pretty much exactly the assault of names thing and terms thing.

I like lots of characters and complicated country interactions and what have you but even I got overwhelmed at times from the terms it was throwing at me. At least the subs I watched would have like 4 different japanese words to mean the exact same thing (or close enough) that were only translated to an "english" phoenetic word.

I didn't really like either, but I dislike them for entirely different reasons and they are nowhere near the same thing. I would say they are not even remotely similar except for the medievilish thing.

12 Kingdoms is AWESOME. Definitely one of my Top 5 anime. It starts slow and boring, but after episode 7 it's incredible how the story and the whole world starts making sense and you just can't stop watching.

The second story tries hard to amend that, though. I dunno, I kinda liked the third story overall, but I've always been conflicted with the show. It's like Harry Potter with no redeeming charm.

The cheap way? NT costs $13! You may as well shell out the extra $7 or so and get the full first DVD.

I haven't bought an issue of NT in over a year, did they raise the price? I swear it was only $9 (still way too much for a magazine).

Volume one of S7 is $17.99 at DeepDiscountDVD.

Yeah, they had a bit where they took out the DVD, then when they brought it back they jacked the mag's price up to $12.99. Wotta rip.

Just finished episode 1, and I like it.

Pacifica isn't some loud pompous heroine that plugs someone in the jaw for glancing at her chest, nor is she a meek useless avatar that requires constant surveilance from her own boobery...actually the jury is still out on both, but so far I dig.

Fights are neat, and I am half intrigued by why this busty blonde babe is labeled the destroyer of the world, as silly as it is.

Glad you liked it, it's one of my personal favorites from the last few years. I marathoned the series on my laptop during my Christmas break in 2003, but then found out I had left the last episode on my desktop computer at my apartment 200 miles from my parents house. Whoops.

Pay close attention to things, it may help clue you in on what's going on. Aside from the last episode, I absolutely loved everything about the show. Don't worry, the ending is well done, the last episode is more of an epilogue.

But you get a magazine and episodes of two other anime while you're at it. :P

What other 'fantasy' anime is classified as very good?

Vision of Escaflowne (my second favorite anime series of all time behind Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam). Yes, it has mechs, but it's still fantasy, dammit.

Scrapped Princess spoiler warning
If we're going to count SutePri as fantasy with the mecha at the end, then Escaflowne counts too.

i have been wanting to check out Rune SOldier for a while now. I didnt think much of orphen tho (other than the hilarious english dub) you guys think rune soldier is worthwhile?

Yea, I should mention I've seen Escaflowne(great!); Berserk(meh...except first and last episodes), Slayers TV(meh...but I loved the OVA/movies!); and Rayearth(I was young and apparently full of estrogen).

Rune Soldier eh?

I think the animation is rather nice, it's a comedy so it doesn't get too serious very often. Very cool characters, good series all around, IMO.

Record of Lodoss Wars OVA(13 episodes) and Records of Lodoss Wars: Chronicle of the Heroic Knights(26 episodes) are pretty good.

Also forgot to mention Bastard!!!

Record of Lodoss Wars TV's intro is one of the best I have ever seen.

The show good too, I'd even throw in the Legend of Crystania stuff since it deals with the same characters.
