Seems to early for nextgen consoles...

Every generation, consoles get more and more powerful, though it seems to me (maybe I'm wrong) that the lifespan of each generation is more or less the same. Don't be quick to point out that the PlayStation and SNES had games coming out for them even though the next generation consoles were already released though, no smartasses :P

My point is, the more powerful your console, the greater its potential. And with the GameCube, PS2, and Xbox, it seems to me that there is still lots of time to go for them to be better/fully realised in terms of their capabilities. Though with Xenon launching at the end of this year (supposedly), and the PS3/Revolution launching a year after, I feel that it seems sort of early for a new generation.

I dunno, but frankly I'm quite happy with the current consoles, and I wouldn't mind waiting even another 3 years for the next generation. Xenon's launch this year however will definitely make us just want Sony and Nintendo's latest offerings that much sooner. Just saying that if nextgen consoles weren't expected for another 3 years, I wouldn't really care. Games like RE4 look great, so who cares :P

Of course, PC games which look better and better from month to month will make the waiting that much harder, so perhaps the next generation's arrival is actually on schedule.

Still, I'd love to see the current generation last a little a longer.

we're done. Need next gen. Funny thing is before say November last year; I didn't feel this way. RE4 + FFX2 (played it late) changed everything. Maybe XBox can last another 1-2 years but I think a generational leap forward is about right soon.

I agree with miyuru, I'm no rush for next gen consoles, my backlog of great games that I still need to play is crazy.

/me too

because many next gen games will be probably the same only with slightly better graphics. there are many developers that can push the current generation in terms of graphics and gameplay -> last year for example was one of the best years in ps2 gaming imo -> and this year will be even greater (in europe: mgs 3, gt 4, ffx12, burnout 4...)

^ I agree with the last two posts.

I will buy my next console most likely in 2007. I don't know yet if it it's PS3, Revolution, or both, but this generation of consoles will easily last till then.

If you have a huge backlog, isn't that a good thing? By the time you're finished with your backlog, you can jump right into the next gen. ;)

For me personally, it's not a problem. New releases don't dictate when I buy, that I do myself. There are several titles this gen I've planned to buy but haven't yet. I won't buy any next-gen console at launch, no real point in that.

the PS2 have not lot of room to get better. It was a rushed system launched to kill dreamcast life early. The GC will soon run out of space on is mini CD as soon as less "nintendo looking" game will be needed.

The Xbox could continue a bit more as it's anyway less old, but not much.

Thing is, sega was just in time with the DC, the N64 was launched far too late so it got a far too long life and the PS2 should have replaced the PSX lot before.

You know what i want in a next gen console? a freakin remote where i can turn it on and off. Nothing fancy just a way to turn off or on teh console without going to it.

I could live with a next gen console this fall/spring. Especially since the PS3 is backwards-compatible. I could get all the PS2 games I missed for cheap.

I agree completely. I have alot of games that i havn't played yet, and now with the new systems coming out, i will be forced to throw them all away. I hate the fact that the minute i buy my next gen system, that i have to throw all my other "last gen systems" in the garbage. I really wanted to play those, but now i'll never know how MGS3 ended.

So what, if games like GTA:SA is pushing my PS2 to the point that i can actually hear the "emotion engine" cry out in agony as it struggles its best to pop up a tree 10 feet in front of me, before i crash in to it. I know if programers had another year or 2 they could probably get it to pop up maybe even 20 feet next time. With less detail of course, but who needs leaves really? It is in the desert after all.

And i know, 2 years from now, almost every single game that would have come out on the Xbox would have had atleast a little bit of bump-mapping... Did you hear me? almost every single game.

I truly believe that all this and more could have been possible, if it were not for this desperate rush for "next gen systems" the kids seem to be into these days.

hahahahaha excellent post

I can't wait for this fall. roll on, next gen, led off by MS :p

Not everybody wants to shell out the money for a next gen console this soon after purchasing a current gen one.
Not only that, but people want to still be able to play the latest titles.

You're crazy if you think that the systems have been pushed to their max graphically, too. The N64 was still being pushed when the GameCube released. The GameCube, XBOX, and PS2 are all still being pushed. Games coming out look much better than games released last year, even.

I just want to see each console reach its full potential before jumping to a new machine.

Get used to it, lifespans will continue to decrease i would expect. I would imagine that Nintendo would be the happiest with this since the Cube is all but dead, there's practically nothing coming out for the system this year (though some of the titles coming out will be amazing). Microsoft must also be happy since they've lost so much money this gen.

2005 is a solid year for Nintendo. No weaker than 2004 and stronger than 2003.

Well no one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to buy them ;)

I mainly want the next gen to start for sports games, they've done about all they can do with them this gen.But I don't see any games getting any better looking than RE4/Ninja Gaiden for their respective consoles and the PS2 aside from a few titles is really showing its age.

You're right, but I wont get support for current gen consoles once next gen consoles release. THAT is the hang up.

Quantity wise, not quality. RE4 and Zelda make it better than any other year so far, save maybe 2002, but the amount of titles coming out is just pathetic.

pass me that magic thingamig you're using to judge game quality on 2005 GCN titles. With regards to Quantity.. 3rd party aside, Nintendo's 1st/2nd party stuff should be mostly good.

OT... but on the PS2 front. I fucking can't wait for Okami. That's it I think...

This generation started with Dreamcast...and PS2 launched a heck of a long time ago in Japan. End of story. It's been long enough, wait till you play games like Half Life 2 on consoles and you will never look back.

And Miyamoto said he wanted the 'Cube to last 8 years or something, and it's totally possible.

I guess the main reason I want the next generation to launch later is my huge backlog of games. Just when new consoles come out, they look SO much better that it kills a lot of motivation to play last gen's games.

Across all three major consoles, there's just too many great games to play, gimme a couple more years or so ^_^

Very true, but I'm going to make the somewhat moot point that I like buying things at launch, to experience them as they happen, because then games are that much more special IMO. Especially system launches, but game launches are fun too. Playing GE when it was released was awesome, because everyone was talking about it, the community was hot. It wouldn't have been half as fun playing it a year later though.

I had a dreamcast at launch, wich is more than a good while ago. I've since reluctantly liquidated it and my launch week-bought Xbox, with only a PS2 in my care, wich i've had for ... about 2 years i'd think, I'm ready for next gen.

I said this in another thread, but if you were here since the beginning of this gen (1998-1999), you'd realize it's been a very long time. Of course, if you jumped in during the GC/Xbox launches, then it's been a pretty short ride. I'm set for another year of current gen systems, but I'll be ready in 2006 for a whole new batch.

DC forever.

AniHawk, get on AIM please.

If you've waited long enough to buy a current gen console recently, surely you can wait a few damn years until picking up the next-gen ones?

I'll never understand late-adopters moaning about next-gen consoles coming too 'soon', when they know they'll wait a few extra years to get the damn things anyway... By the time Xenon launches later this year, it'll be ~7 years since the DC launched in Japan, which is plenty of time IMO.

Of course, the xbox itself is being cut somewhat short, but then if i'd designed a console that ugly, clunky, and thrown-together, i'd want to get a replacement out ASAP anyway... The xbox has some fantastic games, but as a hardware design, it was somewhat... shortsighted. Powerful, but shortsighted (especially the deals they made with the component suppliers). Damn good for how long they had to put it together, mind. Not to mention the aesthetic err... 'values' of the thing...

I am not eager for it, but I am SURE the moment the demos start showing up for Xenon, I won't want to wait any longer. :p

I agree. I think Tetsuya Mizuguchi best expresses my feelings in the following quote:

"Well, I don't think polygons are everything. Using more doesn't necessarily make a better game. I mean, the fun doesn't increase proportionately with the number of polygons!"

Wise words...

Well, I like my Xbox and PlayStation2 a lot. And the games for these consoles are getting better every time. The only problem is that my PlayStation2 is feeling like an old lady, the differance in graphics with the Xbox is getting bigger and bigger. Graphics aren't the most important thing in a game, but I would lie if I said it didn't matter. I don't mind turning on my Sega Saturn or Dreamcast once in a while for fab gameplay, but eye candy ain't bad as well.

With regard to the next generation consoles, how much of a advancement can we expect? I know the demos will soon be out, but just looking at the specs doesn’t really make me believe there will be a huge improvement.

What does everyone else think?

After seeing those leaked next gen Fight Night pics, I can't wait for PS3 and XBOX 2. I'm ready to buy as soon as they are available.

I definitely don't agree with that guy.

Graphics and gameplay go hand in hand -- the gaming experience is all about the imagery onscreen and how it reacts to your input. I'd certainly say that enjoyment is directly proportional to the quality and "ambitious-ness" of the graphics.

this generation started for me in late 1998, when i imported my dreamcast. so a new one seems almost overdue. i'm excited about xenon and ps3 as general prospects, though we hardly know enough to warrant excitement. but that said, consoles see some of their best titles in late life, and i think this generation has plenty left to give.

Well I am ready. I would like to see 720p become the stardand display resolution and I would like to see improvements in frame rate. Also I would like to see improvements in online play as well.

the only reason why we're seeing better titles late in the current console life is because the PS2 was a POS designed console that neccessitated a steep learning curve for developers.

On PS2/GC
I woudl definitely say the best titles are coming still. Plenty of Great names/titles on both consoles. FF/LOZ/Okami//FEGC These will tide us to next gen. I guess it matters cause it's not hitting til post Xenon launch

On XBOX
the best titles are over I reckon. Halo 2 was the coupe de grace. we're doing the wrapup party on a handful of games which I honestly think won't be AAA (conker/Kameo/generic 3rd party racer + fps)

Bring it on. Its ok to upgrade a PC every two years, so its ok to do the same with consoles.

No one says you cant play the old ones, besides most of the people who replied in this thread dont even own an xbox :lol

EDIT:

Thats funny. Jade empire and Conker have little chance of not being AAA. :lol

Hell, I still have a backlog of N64 games. PSX games. A lot of GC and Xbox I have yet to play and/or finish. Yet, I still demand the next-gen. Graphics are my thing. It's shallow, but oh, is it ever tasty.

$300 every two years for a new console, given that they are backwards compatible, is far greater than $1000-2000 every two years to upgrade your PC. As a mostly PC gamer, I would rather consoles came out sooner. It would push technology ahead faster, and it would be cheaper.
