Publisher Sega and developer Amplitude Studios announced historical turn-based strategy game Humankind for PC during the Gamescom 2019 Opening Night Live show. It will launch via Steam in 2020.

Here is an overview of the game, via its official website:
  • One Million Civilizations – Create your own civilization by combining 60 historical cultures from the Bronze to the Modern Age. Each culture brings its special gameplay layer, leading to near-endless outcomes. What civilization will you shape?
  • In the Eyes of Posterity – Every great deed you accomplish, every moral choice you make, every battle won will build your fame. The player with the most fame will win the game. Will you be the one to leave the deepest mark on the world?
  • More Than History, It Is Your Story – Face real historical events, lead renown figures, and make scientific breakthroughs. Discover the natural wonders of the world or build the remarkable creations of humankind. How will you change the course of Humankind?
  • A Tactical World – Show off your tactical skills by mastering terrain elevation with city-building and tactical battles. Call upon your allies to transform a battle into an eight-player world war! What strategy will you mastermind?

DJ Caveman run away from this game.

I just talked with a friend about this the other day, how Firaxis have grown complacent and release Civilization unfinished with several expansion needed for the complete experience, how *someone* should move into this space.
Never in a million years did I expect Sega to step up to the plate, even as a publisher.

Seems right up my alley. And looks like Civ gets worthy competition finally, especially after the disappointments that were Beyond Earth and Civ 6.

As I said last week: It's a new sega game about something that we didn't not ask or beg

In all fairness, this is from the Sega West stable of developers. I don't think anyone should have expected Amplitude Studios to just churn out legacy Sega IP games. These studios still work independently under the Sega umbrella.

I can't say that I am hyped for this game, as I have little interest in the 4X genre. But, it could end up being another surprise like Two Point Hospital (which was one of my top games of 2018). The Endless Space games were really well received.

I find humankind offensive cause it has the word man in it, personkind would have been better.
No, because that has son in it, but you also don't want "people" because then it sounds like you people so we'll have to go with "perbeingkind" and we better have a woperbeing protagonist option.

I think this looks neat. Always happy to see 4x staying alive, against all odds.

Add me to the 4X fan club. I haven't had enough time with Civ 6 yet to be able to say for sure, but I haven't been feeling it so far. I've loved the series ever since Civ 2 (including those Call to Power games), but they need a little competition now. I hope that they can one day convince CA to do a Total War: Civilization.

I think the problem with Sega is that they are now a mix of PC-style strategy games and traditional console games. I love both, so it's win-win for me with any game announcement, but I think they should make it a bit more clear before each announcement which category it falls into, so as to avoid disappointing people.

I can agree with the criticism about how they announced it. Maybe they should've put the same teasers on the Amplitude Studios Twitter as well, so it might've been a bit more transparent. If you had asked me what I think they might tease, I would've said "Hm. Looks a bit like an Alien game? Maybe Creative Assembly are doing another one? Cool!". In all honesty though, I legitimately expected this to be another Sonic game that tries to be edgy (I really liked Sonic Mania).

This is how Civ has been since Civ3. The best way I have found to play the Civ games is to not buy and play the current one until they release (or at least announce) the next one.

lol at people expecting a Japanese game or whatever at an European event. Use your common sense a bit more. Sega has European developers and European presence, why would they show anything else than a European project at a European event ?

It could be a good thing that, unlike say the Civ series, they are unshackled from the expectations of an existing fanbase. Although it looks very much like Civ 5 on the face of it, I'm looking forward to seeing what fundamental mechanics they change.
