I found this on the sega.com boards... can someone fill me in on this... does it already exist in the arcades or is this new?

"found this by typing into Google the following: Aurora PowerVR Sammy

the Sammy-SEGA AURORA is a cheap system for arcades / amusement applications, and it has less performance than the older NAOMI 2, but more performance than NAOMI or Atomiswave."

Sammy bought SI Electronics in 2001. SI Electronics was a subsidiary of Sega before that.

If that document is real, Aurora System may be this one...

Sammy to use PowerVR Based System on Chip

6 June 2002

London, UK: Imagination Technologies (LSE:IMG), the leading provider of multimedia and communication intellectual property (IP), today announced that Sammy Corporation of Japan (TSE:6426) will use SoCs with integrated PowerVR graphic and video cores, supplied by Hitachi, Ltd (TSE:6501), in an advanced graphics display system to be developed by Sammy. Sammy, a rapidly growing Japanese corporation, is a major player in the game machine industry with sales of YEN 164 billion (USD 1.3 billion) in FY2002.

Sammy plans to use the SoCs with integrated PowerVR graphics and Hitachi's SuperH™ family within the Sammy group for: -

* LCD displays of pachislot and pachinko machines

* Amusement game machines
and for other uses, achieved through collaborations with other companies, which include:-
+ Mobile devices, including PDAs

+ Industrial and consumer equipment requiring graphics display
The advanced graphics display system will enable future expansion of Sammy's NEWS (New Entertainment World of Sammy) business, which focuses on new technology sectors. This deal is core to Sammy's strategy for the development of Sammy's new technology business, not only in the current business arenas of the Sammy Group but also in other markets, through collaborations with other companies. Sammy expects to start mass production of these devices in 2004. The PowerVR graphics cores used in the system have been licensed from Imagination Technologies by Hitachi Ltd, as previously announced, and include PowerVR MBX, MPEG4, and Display Controller cores. Imagination Technologies will receive royalty revenue from the products shipped.

Mr. Seiichi Ueda, Director, System Solution Business Unit, Semiconductor & Integrated Circuits of Hitachi said: "The combination of system solution technologies from Hitachi and the leading-edge graphics and video cores of Imagination Technologies is enabling a next-generation graphics system for Sammy Corporation. It will also contribute to our expansion in the next-generation game, digital consumer, car electronics and communications sectors, and is core to our SoC technology strategy."

That system is different from this one...

SEGA Licenses High-End PowerVR Graphics Technology for Advanced Arcade Systems

Aurora is a new value line of arcade system like Atomiswave. It's existed for a few months, but the system and initial batch of games haven't been unveiled yet. It's a complete system on a chip and, interestingly, is based on affordable mobile technology, so it doesn't cost much as an arcade system and could even be used to drive a portable gaming system. A portable system that can do FSAA all the time -- makes the home consoles envious.
