Sen. Booker Cosponsors Sen. Sanders' Medicare for All

From The Hill

Sen. Cory Booker is throwing his support behind a "Medicare for all" bill being introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), becoming the latest Democrat floated as a 2020 contender to back the legislation.

"This is something that’s got to happen. ObamaCare was a first step in advancing this country, but I won’t rest until every American has a basic security that comes with having access to affordable health care," Booker told the New Jersey outlet.

Despite growing support from the party's 2020 presidential crowd, Sanders's push for a single-payer system doesn't have unanimous support from the Senate Democratic caucus.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said earlier this year that it should be one of the options on the table.

This is very awesome. Kamala Harris just came out for the bill last week as well. Remember, Harris and Booker are strongly rumored to be running in 2020. Also of note, these two are not very popular among the Bernie Base. But also with Booker's legislation on Pot, and now this, I dont want to hear as much complaining from the Bernie Camp.

Here's the running list of cosponsors for the bill: HR 676

Good on them for reading the writing on the wall. This is an important basic moral commitment for Democrats to be making and it's a battle they can win after 2020. Politics isn't just about seeing what's currently possible, it's about changing what's possible.

If Single Payer is the forefront of healthcare discussions in the campaigns and debates, and EXPLAINED PROPERLY. (as to why your taxes are going to go up, mainly), We will win that goddamn election with that mentality.

It would be nice if this is something we don't really have to fight about in primary season...

Something tells me that a majority of Democrats running in 2020 will support UHC of some kind, both single payer and multi-payer. Either way, that's a good thing. It's a step up from Obamacare. Who knows, if we can get majority in both houses (not likely), we can pass it before 2020.

The explaining part is really the challenge of it all. Lots of Americans can't see long term and see taxes going up without instant results.

Now is the time to do it. They'll be going up against one of the least popular Presidents ever or someone else from a greatly damaged party.

Health care is my number one issue for 2020. If any Dem wants my primary vote, there needs to be a plan from him/her to get UHC.

Nice to see all the big players jumping on this and supporting it.

Explanation is how they will lose. Nobody wants to hear explanation. Keep it short, to the point, and highlight the benefit.

This will not happen if we have to get America to reassess how they see taxes.

The debates will basically be like this scene:

W6cVsc

The majority of "undecided" voters will be utterly confused and ultimately will make their choice on arbitrary attributes, which is why the Democratic candidate will probably need to be a charming, handsome man (white is safer but not necessary) .

yes, 100% do not try to go for a 'policy-focused' candidate like Hillary

give them bombast, charm and a wish list

being good at policy-making is meaningless, probably a negative at this point

it’s almost like leftist criticism of booker and harris was not only not ill-timed three years before the election, it was actually completely called for, and WORKED

I fully disagree. Especially since Republicans are going to go with their usual "Raised Taxes!!!! And "SOCIALISM!" talking points.

You need to sell the BENEFITS. Sell the savings, not the increase. Sell the elimination of medical bankruptcy. Sell the peace of mind. Sell the better economy. Sell the fact that the top ten happiest nations in the world use some kind of UHC/SP.

Especially since more people are aware of what Single Payer is, including a lot of conservative voters. Bows the time to strike with it when the healthcare debate is fresh, and we're under a stalemate government that has to live with Obamacare or better.

.

Or maybe people should shut the fuck up and not ask for what they want because that's what the centrist establishment wants.

I am glad that the Democratic Party has decided to whole-heartedly endorse ponies.

Well I guess Medicare for All is now a corporate, neoliberal policy now.

Welp, we tried. GGs. :p

In sorry, I don't follow...
It's going to be hilarious if Trump backs it! Lol
Trump backed it before the election. And several times in the decades leading up to now. Multiple times on his campaign. If Schumer and Pelosi can back this bill and get their tentacles into Trump like they did last week, is it really impossible?

Good thing too. We might actually have a fucking platform and identity in 2018/2020.

The GOP's anti-tax and anti-minorities getting benefits messaging has been very, very effective on these issues for 4+ decades. If you think we haven't been trying this approach and are merely failing because we're "doing it wrong"... I think you're about to get learn the same lesson the rest of us learned a long time ago.

Single Payer would be incredible. I feel like, even if the Democrats were able to take by the house and senate, they still wouldn't pass this. It feels like 20 years away...at all times.

It's very possible. That's why I think it will be hilarious. Republicans will be very confused:)

Your intuition is correct, it's highly unlikely that they have enough votes to pass it in the house and senate. (Public Option and universal coverage they can do.)

All that is up against a strategy that has worked for four decades.

Socialism
Unworthy benefactors *aka fuck minorities*
Raised taxes
Too much government

That shit just won an election, and you expect it to fail via explanations.

This is the shit I'm fearing. Utter blindness to the psyche of the folks that will be the reason the bill lives or dies.

There's a difference between smart leftist criticism and dumb leftist criticism.

We saw in the 2016 primary that Clinton moving left was received with indifference at best and outright scorn and derision by certain factions of the left. Most of the people dumping on Harris and Booker now aren't going to be convinced by this move, they'll just focus on something else or ask why they didn't support it to begin with or some other mental leap.

Like I don't particularly trust Booker to follow through on progressive policy outside of some red meat for the base, but he also doesn't need to do much to win my vote if he's the nominee.

Gotta continue to stand up for something from now on. It'll be reassuring if all the big names are for a public option at the very least come 2020.

I'm hoping that this is part of that, his voice is gonna be a powerful one so he's gotta use it wisely.

He campaigned strong for Hillary. Didn't stop us from losing his strongholds like Wisconsin. Having an appealing candidate is way more important than whether or not Bernie is out on the trail advocating for them. In that regard I think Harris and Booker are much better choices than Hillary.

Or maybe some are finding out that there's no harm in endorsing something they won't really have to worry about during their current term in congress or even the 2020 presidential term.

Why the fuck are democrats infighting now? Literally the Janitor of the DNC would be better than whoever comes in 2018 from the R side.

Good luck. You'll need Republicans for this to pass, and they aren't going to be voting for this. They want to cut Medicare, or even better, get rid of it.

And I hope Booker is not a 2020 contender. You do know he donated to Kushner and Ivanka before right?

Yeah. I know it's cynical, but it's easy to show support to a bill that you know is doomed for popularity purposes. He knows any major donors that are anti-universal healthcare are going to be plugged in enough to not feel threatened by this.

Hell, let's make this a 2018 issue.

It will be a 2018 issue. With Trump/Ryan/ Mcconnel's attack on Healthcare with zero action, admitting defeat against Obamacare, it'll be a hot topic. Not only that, the 2018 primaries are going to be rough with the left's tea-party like Justice Democrats, Our Revolution, Brand New Congress, etc looking to primary anyone that doesn't support getting money out of politics, and Medicare for All will be a litmus test.

So yeah, 2018 will be the year of Medicare for All policy wise. Support it, or get mud slung at you.

Why the fuck are democrats infighting now? Literally the Janitor of the DNC would be better than whoever comes in 2018 from the R side.

This thread is the opposite of infighting. There's a lot of cynicism here, sure. And honestly, I cant say I'm not cynical about it either. But I want to be optimistic. If you would have asked me if either Cory Booker or Kamala Harris, much less BOTH of them would come out for this bill, I would have told you no.

If you thought 2016 was a year of purity tests, 2018 and 2020 will be doubly so. Especially if the Bernie wing is involved. If you take somebody like Pelosi, who already has a Primary challenger, and watch them take as much as she has in donations from the medical donors, and then deny Medicare for All, it'll be a bad time for her.
