Shadiversity - Medieval Misconceptions

Shad runs a cool youtube channel that focuses on medieval stuff. He covers combat a lot but also goes into detail on many other things about the period.

Anyways I found this video pretty interesting and informative. IMO we tend to infantilize people of the past and stereotype them as all illiterate idiots, when the truth was actually quite different (tho less flattering to us in the present).

Too many people indulge in presentism these days. They are content to let fantasy fiction "educate" them on history. We would all be much better off if we looked at this crucial period of human development for what it really was.

he makes an interesting point by noting that for a long time most of the English ruling class spoke French, even the rulers of England. so this led to situations where most of an entire country (England) spoke their own language (English) but the leaders & nobles spoke French, meaning the lower class was illiterate in the official language (French). this status quo of the ruling class speaking a different language lasted until the 17th century.
The statement that English aristocrats stopped using French in the 15th Century is incorrect; Anglo-Norman/English nobles continued to speak French as their first language until the 17th Century. To this day, the Queen opens Parliament in Norman.

using language to divide the ruling class and those who are ruled may seem like a medieval concept to us, but it really hasn't gone away. all you need to do is look at legal language, for instance a standard TOS, which is written so that the ruling class understands (the wealthy, or more accurately, their lawyers) while the rest of us are functionally illiterate.

He lost me with his videos about female fighters.

He tiptoes around the fact that women didn't fight in medievil battles because he's scared that he'll be attacked by the usual crowd.

there were women warriors throughout medieval times. they weren't plentiful but there are historic accounts. not really sure where you got the idea that in 1,000 years no woman ever fought in a battle.

Yeah Shad is going through some heavy medical stuff I believe related to sleep apnea which is no joke and can kill you. He has slowed down his content for the time being cos he is undergoing multiple surgeries.

I found out about him through his Last Jedi Throne Room analysis video.

He has some good videos on the viability of lightsaber combat in SW that take historic combat strategies into account.

He also says the idea of Rey knowing how to use a lightsaber because she fought with a staff is nonsense. Those skills do not simply transfer from a two handed to a one handed weapon.

Shad's channel is extremely entertaining, and I highly recommend it.

I've watched hours and hours of videos. Lots of informative stuff.

I also found him off that TLJ video lol. He really pointed out some flaws I didn't even notice, and they are massive flaws.
