Shadows: Mario 64 DS > Mario Sunshine

...Well, sort of.

Has anyone noticed that in Super Mario 64 DS, there are certain situations in which the shadows actually wrap somewhat realisticlaly around the character rather than simply turning the entire character a darker shade? For example, make Mario jump over a Goomba; Mario's shadow will wrap onto the Goomba's model rather than making the entire Goomba a darker shade.

Also, I've noticed that if you're Wario and get the Metal power-up and then stand under the power-up box from which the power-up came (you have to wait a few seconds for the power-up box to reappear, naturally), the shadow of the box will wrap around Wario.

But this technique seems very patchy and inconsistent...sometimes, it works, and other times it's nonexistent. Why?

From what I can see, the technique doesn't happen at all in Super Mario Sunshine. What's more is that the shadows in Super Mario 64 DS are sharp, not pixelated at all. Admittedly, it seems that the shadows in Super Mario 64 DS don't as accurately represent (in shape) the object that's casting the shadow as well as those in Super Mario Sunshine (although Super Mario Sunshine has its fair share of circle shadows, too), but these two systems are generations apart.

Any reason why this is in Super Mario 64 DS but not Sunshine?

I reckon SM64 wasn't much of a challenge for the DS so they might as well try to take advantage of some of the features that the system has to offer.

yeah, a good deal of Mario 64 DS was a good deal better looking than Mario 64... plus it lacks blur-o-vision which is allways nice.

Um, you mean texture filtering? :D
