It's supposed to be about Forza but basically he talks about the new strategy of MGS..

Some key points :

- He grades MGS as it is a "B".
- They're going to focus on big titles which have bigger impact. The results of this strategy will be seen in 2-5 years time.
- He doesn't believe in that it is necessary to release a game in every genre. They have no problem releasing multiple FPSs.
- MGS doesn't need a platformer mascot, Master Chief could be called the xbox mascot. The days of cute platformer mascots are over.
- Rare is doing a lot of stuff he can't talk about, we'll hear about those very soon.

He can't talk about it because "a lot of stuff" is so far off in the stratosphere of the Stampers inane development cycle that it's impossible to categorize.

Very soon in Rare time = Within 3 years

Nintendo needs to think about this. Maybe making Samus's Nintendo new mascot.

What is the over/under of GAF saying, "Rare is back!", after E3 2005.

I don't know, but that makes me think we should have a pannel of people to create "Vegas Odds" for gaming events.

IE: 12:3 odds saying that rare flops at E3

Looks like after Tork, Malice, Oddworld, Psychonauts, and Grabbed by the Ghoulies they learned their lesson?

4:1 that GAF says "Rare is back!" after E3 2005

6:5 that GAF says "Rare will be back Real Soon Now!" after E3 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009

To not chase after mascot games.

You can take that one of two ways, of course -- either Microsoft was right, and the huge amount of platform action cutesy games they lined up (OMG HOW COULD I FORGET BLINX ANYWAY?) weren't that important after all... or it's just sour grapes and they're angry they spent all that stupid money chasing a genre that was DOA on the Xbox.

He is right about those mascots. Tell me what's this gen SONY mascot?

Jak? Umm, no.
Dexter? Umm, no.

Tommy Vercetti, CJ, Snake and Dante - yup. They are everything but "cyoote~".

As a first party, you're not required to create a mascot so much as you do need to cover all your bases. For all the flak Nintendo catches about their efforts to get first-party games for adults, they sure did a lot better than Microsoft this gen did getting first-party games for all ages. Sony's got that with Ratchet, Jak, and Sly Cooper. Nintendo... well. But on the Xbox?

What Kim's saying is that they're not going to spend the money/effort they did this gen in trying to nurture and develop platform cuteness. Apparently.

I would say the same thing if every attempt I made to aquire a platformer mascot failed miserably. I'm not disputing that appeal of Master Chief vs. Mario just that he is making this statement after several failed attempts to try to copy Mario.

Exactly, why try and diss something as dead when you tried to do it but never succeeded. This isn't 1998 anymore. Of course they're not going to be huge, but there is still a market for it. Why the hell would Nintendo keep pumping out Mario themed titles for.

One more thing - sure they failed miserably trying to copy Mario countless times, so what does Microsoft do now?
The same thing they do in every business they are in - if you can't beat them, eat'em (already tried) or downplay them.

Sorry, Kim, but Mario IS the gaming mascot. He was in, what, 100 different games?
Master Chief ain't (yet).

His voice is deeper than i thought it would be. And I guess they are the first party on Windows based computers. :lol Took me a few seconds to understand what he said. Can't wait for AOE3. Lot of blood in Jade Empire. :lol

What difference does it make if they tried to create a mascot before (it was Ed Fries anyway, not Shane Kim)? Does it make his statement less true now?

Shane Kim is a lot more tighter with the wallet. Honestly, if Rare were up for sale today, he probably wouldln't go for them..

Odd thing is that this guy was supposed to be temporary. Or atleast that is how I remember the announcement.

I hope they lose the cel shaded cute angle with Perfect Dark with this guy.

Still Rares Banjo Kazooie were quite good imo.

Yeah but even Mario games aren't selling anywhere close to what they used to. The rest of Nintendo platformers are doing even worse. That should tell you something about the state of platform games. Maybe he shouldn't troll the interview (:D) but he is right. I would like them to create more Jade Empires and less VooDoo Vinces (and that is their best released platformer)

he's not dissing it, listen to the interview, he just says that he doesn't think it's necessary anymore. Maybe I paraphrased it a bit too much when I posted the first message saying days of cute platformer mascots are over.

edit: and shane kim was temporary at first, but now he's permanent. MGS releases since Kim is in charge have been quite good so far. But the real fruits of his strategy we will see in around 2 years.

Concerning mascots, I think that Mario will continue to serve Nintendo well. Thing is, they have to capitalize on his retro/classic/nostalgic factor for Mario to be relevant. A game that caters to the retro Mario with a big marketing push would keep Mario from becoming obsolete.

If that doesn't work - Link - NOT Samus - would be a welcome new mascot for Nintendo.

He was the temporary replacement for Ed, but was later hired as the permanent replacement.

I'm glad he's tighter with the wallet - I think a lot of the places Ed put a lot of money weren't the right places. On the other hand, I'm kind of worried about 90% of MGS' titles being FPS and racers.

Predictable as usual. Its no wonder why Sony and Nintendo has a better advantage. The only thing that comes out of MSG happen to be the same ole same ole whereas with Sony and Nintendo there's alot of veriety.

I like Shane Kim a lot more than Ed Fries. He's a much better communicator. Ed Fries always seemed like he was nervous or drugged.

Oh and Blinx and Voodoo Vince as well.

They made more platformers than Nintendo as well.

Sounds like the soreness after their whole Japan mess, 'Japan is irrelevant' etc.

Since when does Nintendo have "lots of variety"?

How many Mario games are on the market right now? Now how many of those are new IPs?

Sony's first party offerings are a little more diverse, but not by much. They've put out a couple of platformers, a couple of action adventure games, a couple of shooters, and a racing game. The only thing I'd say that MS has been missing in it's first party portfolio is great action adventure games like GoW, HOWEVER they've got Team Ninja to fill that void. MS has put out some platformers, but they were crap. They could do better there.

hell if you like platformers PS2 is the system of choice now. There hasnt really been a great platformer on GC yet. (sms was a bad dream)

This is true. R&C >>>>>>>>>> All. Although I DID enjoy SMS, I never got around to beating it. At a certain point, I just stopped caring.
