video_dlc-2iupv.png

Beginning on May 17, racing fans from around the world will dial up the intensity of the driver’s battle with the all-new SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED™ “Speedhunters” content pack. The digital expansion offers players a whole new career path with new game modes, cars and tracks inspired by the expansive network of automotive photographers, journalists and drivers at Speedhunters.com. With 1.7 million visits and nearly 6 million page views per month, Speedhunters, which is owned by EA, is recognized by automotive enthusiasts as one of the world’s leading car culture sites.

The SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED Speedhunters content pack contains two new branches including Drag and Standing mile. Each branch features nine new events, where players will only be able to use the manual gear change so that they can really feel what it’s like to be in the driver’s seat. This means the traction control features will be forced off and the HUD will display a new rev counter and gear indicator. The difference between the two modes is simple – Drag judges the fastest time over a quarter mile stretch, and Standing Mile judges the fastest speed achieved over a mile stretch. Both branches allows for new high-power customization options where players can create 1000 horsepower engines capable of reaching speeds of over 250 mph.

To top it off, the Speedhunters content pack features two new cars – Chris Rado’s World Racing Pro-FWD Reaper Scion tC and Koz’s Dodge Viper GTS by Twins Turbo as well as 12 specially tuned Speedhunters vehicles available to compete in all disciplines.

XBOX 360 - 83 / PC - 84 / PS3 - 81

Eurogamer - 8/10
Many will consider the game a third place to Forza and Gran Turismo's slicker, more exacting odes to motor racing, but in terms of its social features, SHIFT 2 leads the pack, even if Autolog really is a debt owed to the Need for Speed heritage it is so eager to pull away from.

OXM - 9
oxmu7af.png

GameInformer - 8.5
Shift 2 defines the franchise in a way that the first one didn’t. Although the cars can feel like they swivel on a center axis, the racing is pretty good, and the overall experience gets a boost from the graphics and the erratic nature of the AI racers. It doesn’t blow by the competition, but by improving its lap times, Shift 2 is on its way.

1UP - B+
If you found Forza or Gran Turismo to be too austere, polite, and reverent, but you still crave a bit of sim-style racing, you'll surely enjoy Shift 2 Unleashed -- as long as you're willing to deal with the consequences of its lack of manners.

VideoGamer - 9.0
There's an argument that racing games are becoming stagnant. With this generation of console, graphics and car handling are reaching a plateau, and innovation needs to come from elsewhere. To my mind, Autolog is doing more for the genre than anything else right now, and other developers are going to have to conjure up something similar to remain on equal footing with EA. Shift 2 is technically very impressive, but like Hot Pursuit, it's the social features surrounding the game that define it as an experience. If you're a serious fan of the genre, know that Shift 2 does several things better than anything else on the market right now, which makes it an essential purchase.

A bucket of road racing’s best bits. Stick your hand in and you’ll pull out something fun, if you can handle the handling.

Playstation: The Official Magazine (US) - 9/10

IGN - 8.5
Shift 2 Unleashed's a violent and immersive racer that recreates the driving experience like no other game on the market. In doing so it builds well on the first Shift's foundations, benefitting from Slightly Mad Studios' more refined touch and the inclusion of Autolog, but its handling is still too loose and its steps forward too small for it to truly beat Gran Turismo and Forza – although it does enough to ensure that it's pulled ever closer.

Shift 2 Unleashed is the follow up to NFS Shift, EA’s First collaboration with UK based developer Slightly Mad Studios. Shift was the first attempt to gather more towards the racing simulation crowd, but with EA not willing to shock their core audience to much, it ended up as something in between (& rushed). What SMS however did achieve in Shift, was a visceral racing experience, specially in cockpit view, that set it apart from other titles in the genre.

With Shift 2: Unleashed, SMS is trying to move a little more towards the sim side and with the drop of NFS in the title, with NFS Hot Pursuit delivering the arcade racing, it looks EA is more willing to lean towards sim than ever before. More cars, a, if I may say so ;) ,fantastic track list, autolog, real time telemetry, the addition of the “bouncy bouncy, can someone pass me a bucket” helmet cam, SMS goes even one step further and puts you inside the helmet of a racing driver, it at least looks promising.

Can they deliver this time and challenge other high profiled titles in the genre, or is there still too much Need for Speed, we will wait and see.

Overview: Everything in Shift 2 is build around “eXPerience” points. For everything you do, racing, winning or loosing, driving the right lines, passing cars, beating friends times, race online, etc., you will be rewarded with XP points. You can then use them either to progress through your career (unlocking events) or buy new/upgrade/tune cars. The main goal of the career mode is to beat Jamie Campbell-Walter in a FIA GT1 boss battle, how you get there is up to you, so if you do not like retro cars or for example drifting, you can pick and choose your favourites. The game is keeping track of the cars you use, tracks you race on (autolog) and is trying to make suggestions of available events in the career, based on that.

The nine main career paths are:

  • RETRO: As the title suggest, no modern cars just golden oldies and it pits you against Team Need for Speed’s Darren McNamara in his Toyota AE86, which you will unlock if you beat the final challenge.

    02-10-11_nfscom_toyota9uy7.jpg

  • MUSCLE: With the Muscle racing discipline, you'll be racing everything from time attacks to circuits (with the exception of drift# while using Muscle cars. Your main opponent in this one is Vaughn Gittin Jr. in his Ford Mustang RTR-X.

    shift2_unleashed_ford_kuu4.jpg

  • DRIFT: For those that like to go sideways, drifting makes a return in Shift 2. You will score points, based on speed, drift angle and style and the main rival is the same as in muscle, 2010 Formula Drift Champion Vaughn Gittin Jr., this time his Monster Energy/Falken Tire Ford Mustang GT is there for you to win.

    shift2_unleashed_monstmu9j.jpg

  • TIME-ATTACK It is all about shaving of tenths to beat best times in this mode. Your main rival in this mode is Chris Rado in his 1200Hp strong Team Need for Speed Scion tC

    rado_scion_firecopyanw8.jpg

  • WORKS In this mode you can take your works modified cars to the track and compete against others. Your opponent in this one is Mad Mike Whiddett, part of the NFS drift team. The car for you to unlock by beating Mad Mike, is the Team Need for Speed Mazda RX-7.

    mmdaycopyeup0.jpg

  • ENDURANCE The name sort of gives it away, it is about racing around tracks for a long time, how long is long in EA terms, no idea. Your main opponent in this one is Tommy Milner and you can win his car he drove in last season ALMS championship, the BMW M3 GT ALMS.

    shift2_unleashed_bmw_m775j.jpg

  • FIA GT3 In this class you will race on real circuits again pure-bred race cars, lets call them GT1s Little brother, well know racing brands with just a little less hp compared to its bigger brother. your main rival in this one is Patrick Soderlund, not in his real job as Senior VP at Electronic Arts, but as driver in his
Team Need for Speed BMW Z4 GT3.
    shift2_unleashed_teamnfuss.jpg

  • FIA GT1 The top level reachable in Shift 2 is the FIA GT series. In this racing discipline, you'll be driving in circuit races on a variety of international tracks. The one to beat is as mentioned earlier Jamie Campbell-Walter in the SUMO POWER Nissan GT-R GT1.

    sumo_power_nissan_gtr_qnss.jpg

AUTOLOG: Autolog was introduced in NFS Hot Pursuit and is a form of Big Brother watching and recording everything you do in game. It will dynamically track your career progress, best times and how they will stack up to your friends.
  • You can share, add text, screenshots & replays, so every time you #or your selected friends# starts up the game #or off-line, iPhone app.#, you will receive the updates, on your Wall.
  • On your profile you can follow all your racing statistics, career development , latest unlocks and photos.
  • Recommends continually serves up event suggestions based on your skill level, progression, and how you and your friends are playing SHIFT 2 Unleashed.
  • In the Gallery you will find all you shots and for those using a PC/PS3 #not on Xbox 360#, you will be able to view your in-game videos that were uploaded to YouTube.
  • The last tab in Autolog is Friends, which shows and let you compare to everything your selected friends are doing.

Multiplayer:
There is not to much info about the MP part of the game yet, but from what I could find:
  • 2-12 Players
  • Matchmaking based on progress, connection#ping# and “driving style” # in the background the Shift precision/aggression still logged and used for matching players#
  • You can create ranked/non ranked races #?#
  • Some form of cat and mouse races #old/new , low power/high power cars#
  • You cannot create races restricted on aids, but you can on view #so only helmet cam would be possible, only elite handling mode not)
  • Collision are always on, no option to turn them off.

Tuning:

  • All, non real race cars, will be upgradable to works conversions. By using your hard earned XP points, you will be able to buy new parts, body/areo/engine/suspension/tire, to increase your cars performance. Engine swaps are limited possible, only within manufactures, drive train conversions however are not possible.
  • On the visual side, you can change rims, paint your car (gloss/matt/etc.) and add decals, this time mirrored and they can also be stuck on windows. Like last time if that’s too much trouble, you can select a different livery out of the available presets.
  • You can fine tune every car, if you have the necessary upgrades, this time with the help of the real time telemetry. I believe it is still not possible to fine tune engines (ECU’s). You can (unlimited) save your set-up for each car/track combination.
  • Sharing of set-ups, paint jobs or tuning jobs is still not possible. :(

Game is like the first one, with different settings, changing feel a lot so will try to pick up some suggestions and post them here:

- ATI owner, I use no AA gives massive FPS boost and better feel responsiveness (wheel)

- People often asked what % sensitivity in the controller setting does, here's an image that explains. (2nd image < 50 , 3rd image > 50)

MAD MIKE FUCK YEAH!

Waiting for reviews, but I'll defiantly give this one a rental at the very least. The draw of Bathurst is too strong for me to resist.

Definitely going to check this out if reviews hold up. Like I said in the other thread, the PS3 demo put me right off getting Shift 1.

But Spa, Brands Hatch and Donington in the same game is a definite plus in its favour.

Not going in day 1 just because EA has held back shit tons of info, which is not good and scares me a bit. It's also based on the shift 1 engine so that again scares me even more.

I am really unsure on this, especially when they decided to release TERRIBLE comparison shots of GT5 and Forza. Dirt 3 is the only racing game I was looking forward to this year, if I can find Shift 2 on sale at some point I'm in probably.

The track list looks great!

Anyone care to speculate how long it will take modders to make the physics properly sim-ey?

I'll give it a go, why not I say. That's because I rent games though, would not put down £40 for it simply because the original and HP both dropped in price really quickly here in the UK, same will happen again for sure.

I'll wait for reviews. I expect it to be a very good game like Shift 1 was. Surprised they haven't put a demo for it on PSN or XBLA. EA usually has a demo for every game they publish.

OP is amazing. Have always been kinda sitting on the fence with this but the information (and layout) from this thread may have sold me on it. Well done.

Even if I can only get GRID-levels of fun/realism/content out of this, I think I'll be happy.

Awesome OP.

This game gets me very excited. I don't care if it's not a sim. I loved GRiD, and Shift 2 is probably more realistic than GRiD.

Not going to lie, I am massively anticipating this game. Racing is my favorite genre, and despite being burned many times in the past by blind-buying, I just don't care. I want this game to be good, because all the marketing so far has made me drool. If it is bad, then shame on me, but damn if it's good I will be in heaven. I was not impressed with GT5 in the least, bought the wheel and everything. Not to turn this into "that" kind of discussion, but I imagine others are in the same boat, and want desparately for this game to fill that void that has been left unfilled for the last several months.

fuck yeah, great job with the OP!

sooo looking forward to this - look at that track list!

The big one- On the scale of Sim vs. Arcade games, how would you rate this game?
-Andy said with the first game, it was in the middle of the scale, you’ve got Ridge Racer, PGR, then Forza and GT. Shift was right in the middle. This one is much closer to Forza and GT, the focus is on more sim and authenticity.

Sweet, the X360 version supports the Fanatec wheel. I don't have one, but it's nice to know it'll work if/when I get one.

I don't think it'll take them too long...

Does it really have that many tracks? That is pretty impressive if so. I have yet to see a racing game come out of the gate with that many different enviroments. I am pretty impressed with that aspect.

An excellent thread for this game.

I was one of those who enjoyed the first Shift a lot, but I haven't gone back to it ever since my old PS3 died and took the save game files with it to Valhalla.

What makes me a bit sad is that European release date was moved to April 1st.

2)No reviews from any game journalists
3)No Steam pre-order page

....all this with less than a week before the game is released.

*shaking my fucking head @ EA*

Great OP. Could it be that Suzuka and Willow Springs are still missing from the track list ?

After the patches, Shift 1 was my favorite racing experience ever, mainly due to its great cockpit view, so I'm certainly going to buy this.

This looks very promising but the driving itself in Shift 1 was simply awful and I bet it's the same in this so probably do not want. Also EA.

Great OP Markao!

However, it seems that Fanatec GT2/GT3 users will be very angry.

By some strange decision, Fanatec have gone missing from PS3 list of supported wheels, even on official page (that Markao used for list there too).

WT?

FAST EDIT

I have contacted Thomas Jackermeier and he responded me with this line:

It looks like just the PS3 version does not “officially” support uis but it will work

Really hope so.

Some Loyalty Bonuses have been announced (OP worthy maybe):

.. revealed, I advice BADNET's..

It's BADNED if I recall well ;)

Wow, very comprehensive OP!

I'm in for the PS3 version. Coming out the same day as Motorstorm Apocalypse in the UK too so it'll be two great racing games for me next week :)

Great OP - bonus points for a Z4 as banner :)

Extra bonus points if you have circuit maps go to with those circuits - screenshots are nice to give a flavour but I'd like to see the layouts. Slightly disappointed with so many fictional tracks, but hopefully they're fun to drive on.

Can't wait - played and enjoyed the first one on PS3, will be playing this one on my new gaming PC on a 40" HDTV along with a DFGT - how is the FFB on the PC version?

The embargo is late, kinda Crysis2-ish

I am really unsure on this, especially when they decided to release TERRIBLE comparison shots of GT5 and Forza. Dirt 3 is the only racing game I was looking forward to this year, if I can find Shift 2 on sale at some point I'm in probably.

Probably this. DIRT 3 and its hill climb mode is just more appealing to me than another sim-like racer (haven't really touched my copy of GT5 since my phat decided to go belly up right after purchase)

I was rather skeptical about this game (the first didn't do much for me), but this actually looks pretty good. Convincing OP. Especially all those tracks.

Seems strange though to have Bathurst but no Australian cars...I guess those don't really fit in the game though, they'd have to add another mode for them.

OT totally should have been entitled 'better than Forza 3 and GT5 put together'

(in reference to the video that did the rounds a few weeks ago..)

Great OP. I can't decide if I keep my preorder or not. Maybe someone is able to get the game this week and give some impressions.

Very tempted to get this. Or maybe I should wait for GRiD 2. Choices choices

If Codemasters doesn't delay it again, GRID 2 is still 1 year away so it would be a long wait.

Yes I'm pretty sure those two are in, but will add them when officially announced ;)

Good idea, will see if I can find some time to score myself some bonus points ;)

No demo is really a strange decision but whadayagonnado?

Anyway, Amar gets his copy soon so we'll have an 'in house' impression...hopefully..

I believe we'll be seeing a tonne of DLC post release judging by dev posts. 'Old school cars' were alluded to as being among the dlc( i'm a pre '85 nut!) and i'm confident we'll see even more tracks as well.

Still enjoying the first game on PC. Will definitely pick this up when my backlog isn't so crazy; I've always loved the sense speed their in car view has.

or when it has a steam sale. :p
