Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne

I'm really interested in picking up shin megami and I want to know is it worth the 49.99 admission price, and more over, is it a really solid rpg? Thanks in advance.

SMT3 is one of my top 3 games released this entire year. IF not for MGS3 this game would be unrivaled in terms of art-direction for 2k4. It is a long game but it doesn't seem as such because of the high play:watch ratio. But dont' get me wrong, the story is gripping, well paced, and suprisingly fresh. The core gameplay isn't deep as alot of other turn based RPGS, but the concepts that surround more than make up for it--SMT3 is all about strategy. A fight can seem damn near impossible initially, but a well planned approach i.e. using the right party members, haivng the needed support spells, having the most suited megatama(parasite which governs the main character's attributes) can make that same fight a breeze.

Its well worth it, and if you dig the soundtrack it comes along with the game on a CD.

I'm psyched for SMT now. I'm heading to the nearest mall to pick up a copy. I just hope it's not one of those hard to find rare games.

Logged about 20 hours into it, then came gta, halo2, mp2, mgs3 and now kotor2, im not sure i'll even remember how to play it when i'll go back, but so far i lost the interest long ago. I want to finish it though, art style and ost in that game are top notch.

i wanted to get it, but the more reviews i read, the more i realized i'd never actually finish the game...so i didnt get it.

Same here. I left off at a crossroads with the fusion system debating between one path or the other for my monster creations which I barely recall now. It was about 15 or so hrs in. My fault for putting the game down I suppose, but it's gonna be a nightmare jumping back in.

Was there ever a thread detailing what monsters people chose? I'm very interested to hear some success stories.

It's not too hard to find...yet. But Atlus games rarely stay on shelves for very long, especially as new.

I still have this, but I'm not sure if I want to play a game that requires such a tremendous amount of time put into it. I've been watching my friends play it, and it seems interesting, but I -hate- random encounters more than anything in RPG's now a days. I love the art style though, it's really hot.

How long did it take you guys to beat it?

I'm interested in this game as well. Does it have great characters and an intriguing story? Will I be hooked the first 10 minutes of gameplay? Or is it one of those games that takes 20 hrs to like it?

Great characters? No. Intriguing story? Yes. It is NOT a game you play for the plot, though. The plot is just sort of there as justification for the gameplay. It is not like a Final Fantasy-style interactive novel with battles every now and then. It is ALL about the strategizing, the demon-building and fusing, the team and skills management, and, oh yeah, the battles themselves. If kicking some demon ass and fighting lots and lots of really tough turn-based battles is your idea of a good time, then SMT is really nothing short of heaven.

Hey Infernodash. Your nick brings to mind Pokemon for some reason.

SMT Nocturne f-cking rocks. My favorite PS2 RPG this year, and 2nd favorite RPG of the year!

I'll get started on this someday. I'm still burned on Phantom Brave and Shadow Hearts Covenant though, and KOTOR II is so damn good.

i heard the storyline was pretty shitty and takes a backseat to a lot of other things. of course i like to play videogames for the gameplay, but if you are playing an RPG with a shitty storyline it kind of kills the point. any truth to the storyline sucking nuts?

SMT is a heavy strategy gameplay focused traditional RPG. This game is easily worth $99.99 since I got way more value out of it. The story doesn't suck. It's damn great and refreshing from the common JRPG fantasy save the world plot. The plot emphasis is more on philosophy and idealogy than characters as in other games.

It's a post-apocolyptic RPG, a mature-rated demon-infested, hellish version of Pokemon, for all intents and purposes.

The combat gameplay and strategy heavily involves the standard elements, and exploiting those elements when attacking foes or getting attacked by them is pretty darn crucial in succeeding at this game.

For instance, you get as many turns per round as you have characters in your party. If you have 4 party members, you'll get 4 turns that round, to be divied up amongst your party members. However, if you attack a foe with an element it is weak against, then that action you did only takes up HALF a turn (aside from increased damage, increased chance of inflicting negative status effects, etc.). Likewise, if you totally miss your attack, you lose TWO turns for it.

It's a VERY dynamic system, particularly when the enemies start exploiting elements as well. (Doesn't take too long, even on the Normal difficulty level.)

It's a VERY satisfying twist on an otherwise turn based combat system.

No, it doesn't kill the point, especially when the gameplay is excellent, and in SMT's case, it is. But SMT's story is fine anyways.

The storyline doesn't suck. It's just not the point of the game, unlike most other RPGs. It does take a back seat to the gameplay.

I know it's a bit late to post anything here, but there's news concerning a PAL release (I hope it hasn't been posted before)
Midas Interactive is bringing SMT: Nocturne to Europe though it'll be renamed to "Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call". There's no release date yet but it shouldn't be too far away since the PEGI rating's already done.
