For those looking for one of the best horror manga authors to ever exist, look no further than Junji Ito.

You may have heard of him from such classic manga's as Tomie, Gyo, and Uzumaki. All of which can be purchased in a digital format, which is great if you aren't looking to take up a lot space in your book cabinet.

I'll post a brief description from Amazon of what Shiver has to offer. A lot of these stories are found translated online by dedicated fans of his work.

A best-of story selection by the master of horror manga.

This volume includes nine of Junji Ito’s best short stories, as selected by the author himself and presented with accompanying notes and commentary. An arm peppered with tiny holes dangles from a sick girl’s window… After an idol hangs herself, balloons bearing faces appear in the sky, some even featuring your own face… An amateur film crew hires an extremely individualistic fashion model and faces a real bloody ending… An offering of nine fresh nightmares for the delectation of horror fans.

My copy arrived today and the hardcover is alright. I picked up Dissolving Classroom and the softcover isn't the greatest. I've read a few of these stories elsewhere. It's nice to have a collection of his outside the hard to find Museum of Terror (Dark Horse comics). Shiver was released by Viz, so thanks a lot Viz.

Thanks for the heads up. I pledge to buy this so hard or risk some random kids goldfish sprouting mechanical legs and stuffing me in a man shaped hole in a nearby mountain.

I think I remember the balloon story. it's pretty dark if it's the same one I have in mind. thou since it's Junji Ito we're talking about, is there any other way?

the long worm thing on the cover, if it's the story I have in mind, is
about some girl finding out her boyfriend's ancestors are basically living on through their descendants via detaching the top of they skull and reattaching to the next generation, one after another, until the latest descendant has like an earthworm for a head. is this the one?

I wasn't sure about making a new thread, but the latest story collection (translated) from Junji Ito released today. "Smashed" is the name of collective. It includes 13 different stories. I'm looking forward to reading it.

I only own a few of his books, but Junji Ito is great. I feel so bad that they completely failed at the anime.
I was tempted to get the episodes. Why were they so bad? Souichi is a very creepy kid and I'm aware that his tale was an episode aired as an anime. I'm also curious about the numerous Tomie films that aired in Japan. The book is so good. I'd hate to see a film that couldn't do it justice.

He has his own interpretation of Frankenstein, which also includes more short stories. This came out before "Smashed" did. I bought it for Kindle. I kinda feel like I lost out by not getting them all in their physical format. I own a lot his work through Amazon and Kindle. His take on Frankenstein is very good. He also has a take on Snow White too.

I love his works, bit of some Hitchcock and a lot of HP Lovecraft all wrapped up into Ito's own original warped mind. Uzumaki is his probably his best work, but I really loved Gyo, my favorite is the short story Enigma of Amigara Fault.

That's an excellent story. Especially since you get it with your purchase of Gyo if I remember correctly. Human Chair and The Woman Next Door are also very good short stories of his. With so many translations online and the books being published in North America. I wonder where the legal status sits on all those scans. Junji Ito is a very talented individual. At one time Kojima had him on the team for Silent Hills. I wonder what we will see his work inspire in the future.
