The first real-time strategy for Nintendo DS.

NAMCO ANNOUNCES "SHOGUN WARRIOR: THE LOST ARMY" FOR NINTENDO DS(TM)

Real-Time Strategy Game to Utilize Unique Capabilities of Dual-Screen Handheld Through Touch Screen Battle Plans, Wireless Multiplayer

SANTA CLARA, Calif., (April 5, 2005) - Leading video games publisher and developer Namco Hometek Inc. today announced "Shogun Warrior: The Lost Army" for the Nintendo Dual-Screen(TM). Taking advantage of the unique capabilities of the DS, "Shogun Warrior" allows players to plot complex battle plans using the system's touch screen and engage in massive wireless multiplayer skirmishes for up to 8 players. Developed by Box Clever Interactive, "Shogun Warrior" is planned for release in October 2005.

In "Shogun Warrior", players assume the role of one of two brothers who are locked in bloody combat in feudal Japan. Conquering neighboring territories and amassing formidable armies, only one warrior will be able to survive the deadly endgame to realize his ambitions and claim the title of Shogun.

In their quest to become Shogun, players will utilize the Nintendo DS's touch screen to plot complex battle plans while watching the action play out through detailed 3D graphics on the top screen. Touch screen mini-games such as duels, castle sieges and sea battles enhance the battle experience and give "Shogun Warrior" impressive gameplay variety and replay value. In between encounters, gamers will be able to use diplomacy and military strategy to manage their forces. For the ultimate in feudal warfare, up to 8 players can engage in enormous clashes through the wireless multiplayer capabilities of the Nintendo DS.

"With its touch screen and wireless multiplayer capabilities, the Nintendo DS is uniquely suited to excel at real-time strategy games," said Jeff Lujan, Business Director at Namco Hometek. "'Shogun Warrior' fully embraces these features to deliver an all new and innovative gameplay experience to handheld gamers, while offering a rich and vibrant interpretation of feudal Japan."

I hold out very little hope for Pikmin DS. :(

I'm sure a Pikmin game could be done on the DS. Pikmin models are very simple, the ones in the Total War series are different beast altogether.

I'm sure the Pikmin models are made up of at least the same number of polygons as Mario in Mario64. Could N64-level hardware handle 100 of those on screen? No way!

What the hell is the problem here? Looks great to me, and seemingly good use of the second screen. Stop the damn hate.

Hell yes, thats one of the main reasons I bought mine. (not just real time strategy....love for Adv wars too)

While i realise there is a certain amount of hyperbole in "engage in enormous clashes" it still looks very cool to me.

a Strategy game! OH LORD!

I may have to buy a DS now =] If EA's C&C game for DS is any good, I'll definately be getting one now.

Looks pretty good to me. Bring on the strategy games. Nintendo needs to push those and first person shooters (and get them online stat)

Not bad no reason to blaim the dev team on the over-exagerrated PR on enormous battles. I'm starting to think that grand strategy games just won't be possible on DS.

Grand in scale? Maybe not, but one of the best real time strategy games ever (IMHO) was released on a system far less powerful than the NDS, so i'm sure we'll get more than a few gems on the system.

(Herzog Zwei for the Genny if you were wondering. Now that is a game I would love to see on the DS.)

yeah I guess if they went with command and conquer quality 2d sprites they could make something really grand in scale. In fact a 3D RTS on the DS almost seems silly to even attempt.

The DS can push a shitload of sprites though. Strategy games like Warcraft, Z, Age of Empires and Starcraft Will be easy. These shots show no variety in enviroments, so it looks a bit crap now :\

Starcraft 64 had all the troops modeled, how did that fare?

Totally. You just end up with generic looking low poly models. I'd rather have a great looking 2D RTS than a bland 3D one (which is one of my complaints for this Namco game)
Still, I am digging what this game is promising, so I'll take the bland with the good. Next time they should go 2D, though.

Actually the footsoldiers are really well modeled. You can sea tiny details like their hats, the shape of their spears etc.

I'm just a bit of a strategy nut and I'd like ot have some decent strategy games on the go. I'm interested and depending on how AoE from THQ and C&C from EA turn out, I might be buying a DS soon.

Was C&C confirmed? If so, that is a definite buy right there.

Yeah, the footsoldiers don't look bad, actually. The only things that really look kinda bland are the field maps, and the larger characters in the group renders. They're a tad too clinical.

WTF haterz ? That looks awesome for DS, the soldiers have many details...and the controls look interesting too.

Sure, but advance wars could be done just as well on a standard GBA, as could animal crossing (well, maybe 3D is helpful).

I was talking about this with a friend. DS is needlessly complicated, and although I have one, all the games I am looking forward to could be done on the GBA. Its just the fact they'll be DS exclusive that means I have to own one.
