Ubisoft is apparently going ham on everything Assassin's Creed, and one of the most reported/leaked is a remake of Black Flag that may well launch later this year.

With the success Microsoft has had shadow dropping Oblivion Remastered, is this the ideal way to release remasters now? Should Ubisoft follow suit? Do you think they will?
Ubisoft will do anything except what people want

They'll market the shit for a year. Drop it in an unplayable state. Patch it. Paywall it and micro transaction it.

The fact there's a black flag remake and the Sands of Time remake had to be rebooted in development is damn hilarious to me

Who knows, different strokes for different folks.

If they feel randomly shadow dropping it really, really helped Oblivion, I think they should. I think long marketing windows should only be for new entries that have a lot to explain or show regarding their world etc, but a remake, remaster, can have a much, much shorter marketing window as its an established thing.

I'm fine with either way. I'm ok with a 6 month window to market, I'm ok with a shadow drop.

JaxarGT JaxarGT oh yea, that is a 100% happening thing. Ubisoft has confirmed they are working on remakes and some hiring page revealed it was Black Flag.

So that is a deep, deep happening type thing and not a "maybe" type rumor

Yes. Hyping up a game before release just sets the expectations too high. If it's good then it'll do fine just like Oblivion.

Part of why Bethesda can do a shadow drop is because they're owned by Microsoft. Had that not been the case, the general promotional cycle would have been the same as any other game.

I think so, will limit any news and backlash if they've fucked with anything.

Prefer more games to go this route.

The big reason people remember Black Flag fondly is because of the setting. Mechanically the game is a big mess at points, like AC 3 and AC Rogue.

It's saving grace is it's ambiance and world.

This fascination with the meaningless marketing stunt that is a shadow drop is strange to me.

The game needs to be goddamn amazing to warrant an actual shadowdrop, and considering it's Ubisoft we're talking about...

Realistically, the only thing I can see being shadowdropped is Half-Life 3. Where the Steam page will just appear at some point on some random day.

Oblivion was a remaster not a remake? Hence the €55 launch price. If it's indeed a remaster shadow drop it and charge 50. If it's a remake they can justify more.

I think Obliviion was an exception. Elder Scrolls became so huge with Skyrim and its SP fans had nothing since Skyrim, so it was going to sell. And by doing a shadowdrop did work well an strategy to hide that the remake/remaster runs like shit.
