I've been looking for that game for the past 2 weeks now. I cant find it locally at all, and its seriously pissing me off. What the fuck is going on? I hate those limited pressing of niche games. Even when it came out I couldnt find it locally.

No, I wont buy it on ebay. EbWorld has it for 49$, but they dont ship to Canada. I tried every local shop.

I also agree, you do need some Shin Megami Tensei Nocturn action.

And you need it fast and cheap? My my aren't we picky.

The whole cyberpunk theme of the game really got my attention. I like the whole hundreds of different demons that can join you thingy.

I WANT IT NOOWWWWW!!!

A co-worker of mine is playing this and everyday with talk about it for like 15 mins. He seems to love it.

It sure is pretty, it sure has more atmosphere than most other games, it sure has a cool story, it sure is a cool RPG .... and it sure is tedious having to level up to beat the next boss/be able to splice demons that can beat the next boss.

:( Aside from one early boss who is a doozy, you shouldn't really need to level-up. Are you playing on Normal or Hard?

so i read this thread really late last night and bought the game for like 30 bux on ebay. reading this bored while sleepy is sorta dangerous

Yeah, Greenpanda's right. I've never needed to level up to progress, and I'm nearly done with the game. There are plenty of tough bosses that I've died on repeatedly, but instead of leveling up I'd just go and try a different approach and eventually I'll beat them. Don't wanna say you're playin' it wrong...but yeah. You're playing it wrong.

This thread reminded me to get this game now.

Gamestop has it on backorder but I just ordered it a new copy from ebgames a minute ago... not as rare as I thought. :p

I don't play console RPGs...but, boy howdy, am I ever loving SMT:Nocturne. I generally play 8 hour adventure games and I've already put 20 hours into this game. So far, I've only had to sit around and level for
Matador, who would be the goofiest hell-demon ever if he wasn't so effective at kicking ass
, so that's rather nice. Shuri, the style and demon collecting/mixing/ass-kicking aspects are fantastic. I mean, you have to love any game that allows you to have
Metatron
as part of your party. Also, the Double Jump strategy guide is totally worth the twenty bucks. It's sorely lacking an index, mind you, but still well worth laying down the double sawbuck. Hell, it's practically mandatory unless you are a) very obsessive or b) ready to get rather intimate with GameFAQs.

Finally beat this game after three whole weeks of play. For those starting out with the game I have found the following magics to be very useful in the later parts of the game. Dante is a decent character for certain bosses but his lack of magic is what really makes him ineffective.

1. Warcry
2. Rakunda
3. Mediarahan
4. Fruikegel (you get this in the last dungeon)
5. Magma Axis
6. Penetrate

I didn't put Mediarahan on my hero since I had other characters healing, but I certainly second the War Cry and Magma Axis recommendations. You can get War Cry really early on in the game, too, and it's brutal. Two of them reduce even bosses' special/unique attacks to almost insignificant damage (unless the boss has De-kunda to dispel it ... but most don't).

edit: I'd also highly recommend Mana Drain (or is it "Mana Absorb?" something like that). It sucks up a decent chunk MP from the enemy to you, and works on basically any enemy, even bosses. With it, you can use magic as much as you want, since you can easily refill your MP. I've also used it a couple times to drain all of a boss's MP and render it completely helpless ;). I forget which Magatama you get it from it, though.

Is this game a fun experience if you go for power-levelling? I'm looking for a fun RPG that lets me power up my characters to obscene levels within the confines of the existing narrative structure of said game, i.e., not after the game has been beaten or something, but during the normal course of gameplay.

I haven't played an RPG since Skies of Arcadia on Dreamcast and I'm jonesing for a fix.

this game is pretty much tailor-made for that. you can fight tough demons as much as you want, fuse better ones, and constantly keep raising the bar for yourself.

Oh, cool. I've always been intrigued by the art style of this series as well. I'll have to see about picking up a copy of this, then.

Hard is the only way to go for this game.

Taunt + Warcry = omg destruction.

Ha, that sounds like a good combo - I hadn't thought of that. Aside from Taunt, there isn't any super-powered spell to lower defense, is there? There's War Cry for lowering attack power and Fog Breath for lowering agility, but just Tarunda for defense?

I've been playing on Normal :/ It's been fairly smooth sailing, though, and I think I'm kind of over-leveled ... maybe I should have gone with Hard.

Taunt raises attack and lowers defense greatly. Combined with Warcry, you can reduce your opponent's defense to near nil and keep his damage down to a minimum.

My character layout is pretty damn destructive right now. I have Lunge, Focus, Warcry, Taunt, Fog Breath, Mana Drain, Tornado, and The Force Up trait. I totally debuff opponents with my main character, mana drain and unload for crazy damage.

This sort of things is a MUST for Hard mode. Simplying having a higher level doesn't cut it. =x

This is almost exactly what my character is cruising around with right now, sans Taunt and Lunge. It's all pretty fantastic, particularly Focus. Oh, how I love Focus.
