Simpsons Arcade Apprecation Thread

That hot summer day back in '93, I remember walking into the local pizza shop to cool off...and lo and behold, right beside the old and busted pinball machine was the SIMPSONS!

My romance with playing as Homer was well-known, and I jammed quarter after quarter into the machine.

One day, I even beat it.

And now, I want to hear all of you appreciate the hell out of this, one of the best games ever to hit the Beat 'Em Up circuit.

Some more insight, this video game was based on the JAMMA arcade board. Similar JAMMA? TMNT1. TMNT2.

FYI, a used in perfect condition 4 player TMNT2 arcade cabinet/jamma board/TV (basically the real arcade) sold for $500 in my local city.

You could MAME it, of course, but it's just not the same.

In other news, I used to be MallowJr99/Mallow8x/ELMalloc on this board (can't remember which username) and had thousands of posts, but was banned because I argued with PS2 ranters (even though I had a PS2). I am now back, about 2 years later.

I loved that game, and still do when I play it every once in a while on Mame. It's especially cool due to the enemy characters and the team up moves you can perform with the 4 different family members. I always got a hoot out of Bart & Lisa's running around sounding like ducks.

I actually hated the Konami cookie cutter beat em ups. The first Turtles was amazing for when it was released and because of its four player action. X-Men was atrocious, and Simpsons was very much more of the same. The Konami beat em ups were so shallow and designed to suck quarters like crazy. There was very little strategy and loads of cheap hits. Compared to the Capcom ones of the time the Konami games were awful.

I just noticed that Konami made an Asterix beat em up in 92. I never saw that in the arcade.

Aha. Ban evasion. Got you!

I'd love to play this without paying. I want to make it through the entire things. I've gotten pretty damnded far, but I always run out of money.

They have this at my local DoubleDaves pizza place.

Well...prepare to be raped. BATTLE RAPED. Especially if you intend on signing all your posts with that stupid signature and a picture of your car.

I used to tap that arcade ass every year at the county fair. Was a console port ever made?

My friends and I also used to play one of the Dungeons and Dragons arcade games at the same fair. I think it was Tower of Doom. . . man that game rocked.

JAMMA's just a wiring standard, not a "game board."

I have a TMNT 1 and Simpsons boardset and they are each running on different hardware (not radically different, but not a simple software swap either).

Fun game, I prefer the Capcom beat em ups myself (AvP is the pinnacle for me) but the Konami ones were fun for what they were. Good sound, if nothing else :)

I'm pretty sure ive played this every time ive seen it.
One time, it was one of those days..those rare days, where it was unlimited credits..Oh..oh..OH YES.
I remember playing it with my friend, thinking "how can anyone beat this game with their own money?"

This was a great game. I remember the insane FULL SCREEN SCALING effects. Holy crap!!! I think I eventually beat it with five bucks' worth of quarters.

i remember me and my brother waiting FOREVER for this game to be ported to home consoles, but it never came. WTF was the holdup with Konami? There was a PC version but our PC was a piece of shit.

I was like 10 when I saw that and my parents wouldn't give me an quarters. All I could do is watch other kids play.

The most memorable sequence has to be the beginning, because, well, i ATLEAST got there if i only had 1 quarter.
That wras'lin dude was nuts with the INSANE LIGHTING EFFECTS.

325 or 330?

I remember going to Chuck E Cheese about 13 years ago and someone ran out of tokens fighting Mr. Burns. So I put in a token, and ended up beating the game. :)

They used to have this at Knott's Berry Farm, but removed it this year. :( Still at a somewhat local pizza place though.

I've never beaten SAG.. I never had enough quarters when I felt like playing.. I tried to beat it at the local Drive-In late last year, got almost to the end but nope...

The gf and I came across a machine while at the Jersey shore recently, and trust me, its aged like fine wine.

I might be inclined to agree if I hadn't played it recently and marveled at how I used to actually enjoy this rubbish.

Ah memories. I had the PC version which used to randomly crash on level 5. I was addicted to this for a long time back in the day. Great game.

Ah, we used to play this on free play at friend's birthday parties at an arcade hall called "OUR PLACE II."

We also got this for PC... but I think we got the Amiga version. (was there one?) If not, it was for our 486, rented from a PC place, but I'm pretty sure we got it for our old Amiga...

Loved the game, but it was a major money funnel. So many clever touches and secrets, though. Like if you wait around too long, the hand pointing you on would start beating you up. I think you could even fight back and temporarily kill it, though.

I remember the last level got crazy with "flash the screen so you can't see anything" tricks. Very cheap, but effective.

I think I spent $5.00 in quarters on Mr. Burns alone, and that was with 4 players whooping on him simultaneously. I'd hate to imagine how bad it would be going it alone.

Yeah I used to play this and TMNT all the time at the local Showbiz back before it became Chuck E. Cheese's. It still stands as the best Simpsons game ever made. There were also X-Men and Avengers games that followed a similar formula and were both really fun as well.

Is it possible to even beat this game without spending more than two quarters? Like there are some video game Gods that can do this on other arcade games, but I think it's impossible to do with this one.
