It's quite strange, but for some reason when I create a character and the second I hit the OK button to save it, my computer shuts down instantly. No error messages, no nothing. I've never experienced a problem like this with any of my other games. I can even play Sims 2 using another family for a while and it won't; only when I try to save a character I've made. Here are my specs:

Mobo: Abit NF7-S
Proccessor: AMD Athlon XP 2500+
RAM: Corsair XMS 512 MB DDR PC-3200
Gfx card: Radeon 9500 Pro.

You might want to check the Maxis board or un-install and re-install. With you un-install your game save remains on your PC, IIRC.
