SNES RPgs that were never released in the US

What were some of the better Jap RPGs on the SNES worth playing? Other than the often mentioned Bahammut Lagoon

Seiken Densetsu 3 was a damn good game, one of my all-time favourites. Theres been a translated rom floating around for a few years.

The funny thing is...in 99% of the time where I say that a game is an X-killer I'm not honest...but I'll be lying if I didn't say that I enjoyed Terranigma much more than any other 2D Zelda game I've played other than the original Zelda way back when...or a user made quest (name escapes me at the moment) from ZeldaClassic

Another one you should try is Madara 2 by Konami...

Music is FANTASTIC....if you are a Castlevania 4 fan you should give this one a listen as it was composed by the same person and has very CV4-ish bass samples...

Hehe, I had no idea Terranigma was released in Europe but not the US. It's one of those incredibly rare occasions when it's fortunate to be a European game enthusiast. :lol

Gibbo:

Yes, there's a fansub.
As a sidenote...it has a novel concept, but didn't really grab my attention when I tried it out.

'Gdleen' made by Seta for the Super Famicom - 8 megabit - 1991.

from EGM Number 19 - February, 1991 - page 87:

Seta's first SF game is going to be a huge 8 megabit RPG. As the photo show, Gdleen is quite similar in layout to a Phantasy Star 2. That is, the quest is set in an overhead perspective with pull down windows. The battle scenes will zoom into a PS2 type head-on view with your options for battle shown below. With meg though, the enemy are highly detailed and fully animated. The mazes are, again, like PS2 set in a 3/4 overhead view and consisting of sceen after screen of intertwining corridors, all loaded with huge enemies

I remember how this was the one supposedly impossible to fan-patch translate. Is that still true?

What makes this game so special?

I always wanted to play this one, but I'm hoping for a fan translation.

I also recommend:

Dual Orb 2
Dragon Quest 6
Feda: Emblem of justice
Magna Braban
Neugier

This one's great. I play it on my PSP all the time now.
Isn't this a bannable offense? O_o

I know I was banned once for saying I was playing a rom.

everyone here is having their Super Famicom license revoked for failing to mention Marvelous, Eiji Aonuma's first RPG.

You know, the guy responsible for MODERN ZELDA.

yes, 'Gdleen' made by Seta is good

playing RPG at Super Famicom era = in heaven
even some RPGs made by small 3rd parties are very fun
I miss those old days :(

AFAIK, it had a realtime clock in the game, thanks to a specialized chip, or something like that. It made the game un-emulatable. That problem was eventually solved, but the chip still provided an extra level of hassle to fan-translators.

I would add "Dragon Quest 1&2" and "Dragon Quest 3" to the list. They've been released in English on the NES and GBC, but not in their ultimate form, which was on the Super Famicom.

I also like "Sailor Moon: Another Story". It's obviously only recommended for people who liked Sailor Moon (or people who haven't seen it, and would be open to giving it a try), but if you did like Sailor Moon, it's an RPG with a new (non-canon) story, and it's pretty much the best Sailor Moon game available. It's fully fan-translated.

BTW, there are also RPGs for other shows, like Slayers or Magic Knight Rayearth, so that opens up a whole new can of worms.

Definately Terranigma.

There was a post on the Enix forums a few years ago where someone asked if there was going to be a Terranigma remake for GBA. The Enix employee's summarized replied was something along the lines of "why would we do that failure of a game?". Pretty cold.

I know Quintet went on to make a few more games, but their web site hasnt been updated since 2002 :( The character designer is still doing work.

Actrasier is a SqEx mobile phone game, but no Terra lov'n.

highly recommend
Card Master (from HAL)
Dragon Ball Z (RPG from Bandai)
Oni (from Banpresto)
Step Stick (from Enix)
Mysteric Ark (from Enix)
Lennus 1,2

recommend
Shi Gu Ma
Hercules' Glory 3,4
Feda (Shining Force clone from Yanoman)
SD Gundam RPG
Athena (from Yanoman)

It's not an RPG though:

Neo, Lennus 1 came out here as Paladin's Quest. Well came out in the US anyway. Also, I don't really understand all the Feda recommendations, but I guess since there were slim pickin's on the SuperFami, people are bound to enjoy almost everything.

Was final fantasy 5 any good? I always wondered why it wasn't released in the US or did they release it here? I heard it was thought to be too complicated for American gamers that is why it was never released here during the SNES era.

Final Fantasy Anthology (PSX) has it

FF Extreme, as the SNES version of 5 was called, was cancelled. FF5 did arrive here on the PSOne, eventually, however.

Lennis is one of my Favourite RPGs in SFC era
I never know the title had been released outside Japan
it seems people not like Paladin's Quest and review it as a very bad RPG??

SMT lovers should give it a try...I don't understand a fuck...but the story seems pretty dark.

No, it's not complicated.

My vote would go for DQ3, FF5 (PS version isn't great compared to the cart), and whatever else. TO?

Had you ended your post there, it would've been perfect.

Was Final Fantasy 5 really complicated?
IMO the system is PRETTY good...Of course I am comparing it to just FF7 and FF10 which in my opinion have pretty stupid systems...You can make any character do ANYTHING and mix a lot of things. Actually the system is very powerful...

I am beating it for the first time and I wouldn't say it's complicated...Actually the game is fairly easy.
Graphically sometimes it's pretty poor...But the music is awesome. :) Don't forget to check Yoshitaka Amano's art...Genious.

neo, you're a man after my own heart. I was coming into this thread to suggest Lennus 2, a game which I bought at launch and STILL haven't got around to playing (yes, I was this bad back then, too).

The first Lennus came out in America as Paladin's Quest. All who mocked it for its visuals need to be lined up and shot. It's a great RPG with a very unique atmosphere and solid gameplay. It's one of my favorite games to mention whenever anybody starts up an "underrated games" thread.

EDIT: Agreed on Final Fantasy V, too. It's a shame the US localization was such shit, because it's a wonderful game. I have great memories of playing through it back in 1992...

I'm not denying it, but could you explain why? I remember renting it when I was really young, and absolutely hating it. However, I wouldn't mind revisiting it...

Holy Crap, I've just spent 3 hours with Terranigma and it bloody rocks! Thanks for the recommendation guys ! Anyway, has Paladin's quest been fan-subbed? Seems pretty interesting

Oh yeah, and I'll second neo's recommendation of the Dragonball RPG. I was a huge fan of the series at that time and I managed to complete the whole game without understanding a single word of Japanese :lol Definately one of the best if not the best DBZ liscenced games out there.

There is just so many great snes rpgs that did not make it over on this side. Here a few of top my head that have not been mentioned(much):

Arabian Nights
Aretha 2
Daikaijyuu Monogatari (Big shell monsters series)
Daikaijyuu Monogatari 2
Grand Historia
Madara 2 (competely and totally rules)
Romancing Sa-Ga's
Seiken Densetsu 3(mana)
Wozz

Man, I really wished that FFV had come out here at the time it was supposed to and with a competent translation, if only that "old school" gamers would stop riding the cocks of FFs IV and VI...
