I'm going home to the city by the lake to eat some pizza, visit the family, pray in the friendly confines and see some pimp bands play against one of the most beautiful skylines in the world. Anyone else gonna be there?

I'm looking forward to the Black Keys, Arcade Fire, International Noise Conspiracy, M83, the Walkmen, and the Ponys. woot woot.

edit:

Awesome, awesome show. I just got back to my laptop so I can post some pics from the show. I barely know how to use a camera so it'd be cool if the professionals here cut me some slack.

After sweating in some crazy lines to get our two-day bracelets, we entered Grant Park and the (international) noise conspiracy was already rocking the proles and scaring the old hippies.

M83 played the next set on the stage just to the right and were fooking amazing. I was a bit concerned on how they'd translate live, but the intensity of the drumming, synths and decent guitar-playing was stadium sized. I was disappointed that so much of the crowd left during the set that by the end I was almost up to the stage. fuck the imbeciles who need inane, trite "lyrics" in every song.

Next, I listened to about 15 minutes of ...Trail of Dead's set and left because I was bored and the lead singer delivered the worst stage banter in history. "I'm fucking aliivee!!! You're fucking aliiiivee!!! We're all fucking aliiivve!!!" and other references to beer, Texas and themselves being eunuchs. I've posted a picture of the other singer's ass because I thought they were shit.

The Kaiser Chiefs played a fun, little set. I left early to check out VHS or Beta because they played most of the good songs off of Employment in the first half of the set. The lead singer had great presence and offered a few hilarious one-liners (including the one about the noise bleed from Liz Phair's set). Pretty decent crowd for this one too.

VHS or Beta sounded decent live, but their songs don't really play well in a festival setting in my opinion.

My buds and I went to get some food during some bands I din't care to see and came to back to get up close for the Black Keys. During the wait we listened to Blonde Redhead who were pretty bomb.

Next, The Black Keys rocked the motherfucking Chi back to the Pullman porter days. Amazing fucking set with a good variety from Thickfreakness, Rubber Factory and even a Beatles cover. Fuck Yeah!!! Tied for the best set of the show with The Arcade Fire. The only downside was these meatheads who kept throwing down with their hands like it was a G G G GGGG-Unit show, but that was made up for by this weirdo who introduced the Keys and danced his ass off on the back of the stage.

After this I went and ate a nasty $5 smoothie and walked over to see the Walkmen while EVERYBODY else (including my friends) went to see the Pixies. The Walkmen played a rocking set that was hampered by its brevity (~40 minutes instead of an hour) and the lack of a crowd. Whatever, the Pixies are old. ....just joking.

after the short Walkmen set I walked over to the stage where Weezer was going to play and listened to half of the Pixies set. About 15 minutes before the Pixies ended Perry Farrel came out and brought out some Lolla Girls in thongs who danced to a shit version of Chicago to thank the city; it was fucked up because the stage was right next to the stage the Pixies were on and was a bit distracting.

Anyways, Weezer played, rocked the hits with 3 songs from Pinkerton, and Rivers was in a good mood. The only misstep was playing some shit ballad from the new album as the FIRST encore. Boo.

It was a good first day and the heat wasn't too bad because it was overcast and rained a bit. Heres a picture of the masses walking into the night and preview of the second day's heat.

I'm going to resurrect this thread. Who else is going to Lolla, because I know I am.

This is seriously going to be better than Coachella. I just wish The Pixies and The (International) Noise Conspiracy got longer sets.

Wow, what an incredible show!

Despite it being a scorching 105 degrees in the Windy City, I still managed to brave the entire thing with only some sunburn.

Best overall is a tie between Pixies and The Arcade Fire, with ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead as an honorable mention. Pixies played a fantastic set, placed all of their songs perfectly. They even played a Jesus & Mary Chain cover! The Arcade Fire was at the top of their game, and had such a lively performance.. and Owen fucking Pallett showed up, which just about made my summer. Trail of Dead was explosive and got piss drunk, and then one of the guys broke all the instruments. All of them. It ended with the lead singer playing an unplugged electric guitar in front of all the rubble, suddenly realizing where he was, and then waving goodbye and running off.

As for crowd participation, Kaiser Chiefs blew them all away. Ricky kept telling Liz Phair (who was playing at the same time on the main stage) to "Shut up, we're trying to work here!" He also called the bassist a jerk for breaking a few strings on the only bass guitar they had, but luckily The Bravery's bassist loaned his guitar, so they could continue. Towards the end of the set, Ricky was noticably losing his voice, so he had two fans come onstage and sing "Oh My God" so he could dance around and recuperate. And they weren't bad, really.

Primus's pit was out of control. At least 4 kids were sent packing for crowd surfing, there were countless pits, and I distinctly remember two morbidly obese people storming out from the front calling us "Young idiot fuckers." They were predictably outstanding.

Saul Williams played an outstanding set, too. He got added on at the very last minute to take the place of World Leaders Pretend. They also gave Pixies an extra 15 minutes, something I dearly wanted. Overall, a fantastic show. I plan to go next year, if they have it in Chi-town again.

If anybody wants some pictures, I was pretty up-close for Trail of Dead, (International) Noise Conspiracy, The Arcade Fire, Primus, The Dandy Warhols, Saul Williams, Los Amigos Invisibles, Pixies, and Digible Planets. I was sort of mid-range for M83, Death Cab for Cutie, Cake, Billy Idol, and Blue Merle. I got a cutaway or two of The Bravery and Ben Kweller.
