So, got into the FFXI beta..

Except, the "problem" is exclusive to the beta, and doesn't plague the retail release at all.

Surely, when you have thousands of new players cramped onto this one little server, the low-level areas are going to get crowded. But in the retail release, you'll be hard pressed to find more than a dozen people in these areas, at any given time -- hell, last night, I was the only person leveling in South Gustaberg (the "noob area" outside Bastok) on Fairy. So, really, it's not an issue at all.
I had the exact same problem when FFXI first came out on PC, but whatever, since the X360 version will be linked with PC/PS2 servers it shouldn't be a problem at all.

FFXI sucks!

Just wasted 45 minutes of my time by holding the left analog stick at various directions. I did come within attacking range of a dozen or so enemies...but someone else always won that race. How stupid.

Bitch session over.

most people will say don't party untill lv.10, but if the noob area is crowded don't be afraid to make a 2-3 person party and push out farther to where there are more mobs.

Also if you don't have a magic attack to claim mobs buy some pebbles from the AH or NPC. /ra FTW

my in-game name is dubois. Doesnt matter right now because my 360 is getting sent to MS for repairs. They told me I should be back up by early next week.

>>>most people will say don't party untill lv.10, but if the noob area is crowded don't be afraid to make a 2-3 person party and push out farther to where there are more mobs.<<<

Yeah, further out there should be mobs that aren't very attractive for solo exping. Also, WAR would be a good job to get claims with, and is a very useful subjob later. (not sure how long beta is) I used WAR sub with all three of my lv50+ jobs. (75 Paladin, 70 Monk, 50 Dragoon)
Have you looked in Dangruf Wadi, though? It has a lot of the same mobs people are fighting over in Gustaberg, but most people on the beta probably don't know about it.

I actually did most of my grinding in dangruf wadi, I found it on a mission. The only problem there is I allways get lost in it. Also, the enemies there are a good deal more powerfull and their aggro is much higher. I did well in there once I hit level 4-5 though.

>>>lolBibiki'd :(<<<

Lol, yeah. There's a zone that was introduced with the second expansion called Bibiki Bay that became overly popular with the 60s to early 70s crowd because it was easy exp. (soft, highly-suicidal targets) SE tried to improve things by expanding the area the exp mobs roamed and adding a lot more spawns, but parties quickly filled it to capacity and beyond again.

i do think some of it was a little excessive ....but you make it sound like it was grabbing on to your balls and squeezing them the whole 3 hours to install it...

i mean really, you pop it in, some bars fill up ....you enter some info, you put in some passwords, and thats it ....sure it was a little more difficult to actualy start playing than some other games....but some people around here are making it sound like they had to kill there mother to play it ....

It wasn't only the install. It was the multiple installs, it was the multiple registrations that were fucking case sensitive AND when in caps lock you can't use your numbers so you have to navigate back to shift for every number/letter combination, then once everything is done try getting in the game... the was a journey in itself.

My only point is if you want someone to play your game it better be fucking easy as shit and no frustration involved when getting in the game... let alone playing the damn game. I was so frustrated with this game once I got in and saw how ugly it was I gave up and went and finished condemned.

You simply need to kill a skeleton/bone-type mob, which spawn at night in South Gustaberg (around Dangruf Wadi's entrance), to get a "bone chip" drop. It might be a bitch to get ahold of one, though, given the shortage of mobs, so you may want to check AH for one if you have trouble.

Either way, once you have that, go to Bastok Markets and talk to Degenhard (I-10). Then, simply use the "Trade" command and give him the bone chip, and he'll give you a Map of Dangruf Wadi in return.

That should help. :)

I'm installing this right now. It sucks that I can't retrieve my character from when I playing on the PS2. I get to see the exact same part of the game now. I don't know if I'm really looking forward to it at all.

Not sure what class to go with either. I think I'll play the magic side just cause I know I will be in high demand once I hit level 10 or so.

Mines installing right now, few questions:

Is a keyboard and mouse neccessary, or just a keyboard?
Does it support wireless?
Im a newb in MMOs... whats the right player and job to pick?

played last night, all it made me do was think "this is my 3rd attempt, and it's still shit compared to WoW" *runs*

anyways, the areas are packed and the number of "Gayfag" or "nigger" shouts from the retards is terrible

"don play this game, dun go and del ur gametag and ur still a gayfag"
etc etc...

Using a mouse is actually counterproductive in FFXI most of the time. Just keyboard or Keyboard + controller is a much better combination.

1)Just a keyboard.

2)Haven't heard one way or the other, but I'm leaning towards "no" as sometimes those require their own drivers (or at least drivers that may not be provided by the game or the 360). Couldn't hurt to try, though.

3)There's no real "right" one, as it will really depend on your playstyle and what type of role you'd like to play in parties. But, to help you out, here's a list of the races and starting jobs:

Races:
Hume -- Male/Female -- Humans of Vana'diel, overall a "Jack of All Trades" race, so they'll be able to perform rather well no matter the Job you choose, but won't excel in any area. If you start in Bastok with a Hume, you'll receive a ring.

Mithra -- Female Only -- Catgirl race of Vana'diel, right behind Humes as the next-up "Jack of All Trades" race, though they have a few stats (DEX & AGI, I believe) that set them apart. Still, like the Humes, no matter which Job you select, they'll perform rather well. Start in Windurst and you'll receive a ring.

Tarutaru -- Male/Female -- Race of ultra-cute runts, they'll excel at mage-type classes due to their stat-leanings, and be a little bit crippled in melee/tank roles. Still, there are many, many successful melee Tarus in the game, as you can offset any set-backs with relative ease. Start in Windurst and you'll receive a ring.

Galka -- Male Only -- Big, brute race, they almost look like a cross between a gorilla and an armadillo... or something equally weird. They'll excel at melee/tank roles, but have a bitch of a time performing up to par with the other races in mage-type Jobs, due to their stat leanings. While it's not impossible to be a successful Galkan mage, they'll never really match up to the other classes, and look severely gimped (especially in MP) in comparison. Start in Bastok and you'll receive a ring.

Elvaan -- Male/Female -- Elf race of Vana'diel, they're right behind Humes & Mithra as the third-most "Jack of All Trades" race. Their biggest downsides are low INT & AGI stats, but it's slightly offset by their increased MND & STR stats. Overall, they'll be able to perform relatively well no matter which Job you choose. Start in San d'Oria and you'll receive a ring.

On the ring bit, you don't need it, but it'll be helpful when starting out, or leveling other low-level Jobs in the future. You need to pick the nation I suggested to start out in for each race, to receive the ring, but after which you can travel to another nation of your choosing and change your allegiance at any time (though there'll be a substantial fee, most of the time).

Jobs:
You'll have 6 Jobs to choose from when you first begin:

White Mage
Black Mage
Red Mage
Thief
Monk
Warrior

Whichever you choose, you'll receive the starting weapon for that Job (ie: an "Onion Rod" if you choose a White Mage), and a starting spell if you're a mage. At any time during play, you can enter your Mog House and select the option to change your Job... If you choose to do so, all of your progress for the previous Job will be saved, so you can switch back at any time without any loss taken to your Levels, Skills, Spells, etc.

So really, even if you dislike your choice of starting Job, you can simply run into your Mog House (located in the "Residential Areas" in each portion of your starting town) and change to something else. Just experiment throughout the low levels until you find a Job you enjoy playing. :)

Yeah, that was necessary. :|

Not surprised about the Xbox Live kiddies, though... In a way, I'd like for more people to give the game an actual shot, as some people end up really enjoying it; but on the flipside, if it means people like you just mentioned, I'd rather they stay away -- far, far away.

...I never heard any comments like that in all my time in FFXI. I heard a lot of retarded squabbles after the post ps2 04 xmas flood, but they never resorted to biggotry. I fear the XBL kids. -_-

PS: Bastok Elvaan > *

;b

Mithra excel in AGI and DEX but take a hit in STR, CHR, VIT, and a little bit in both INT and MND IIRC.

Tarus excel in MP, INT, and with lower rankings in VIT, STR, HP, and a few more melee stats.

Elvaans excel in STR and MND but lack in DEX and INT. MP is weaker than Humes but they also have higher HP.

Galkas have high melee stats all the way around but lack the MP of the other races but have high HP to compensate.

Humes are all encompassing.

Any race can do any job, it's a matter of Skill followed by equipment. You're never gimped in any job, you just don't have advantages. I've seen Taru Tanks taking on the big boy mobs of FFXI while seeing Galka Mages destroy Taru mages in effectiveness in a party or adventure setting.

yup, i played the PS2 version a bit when the JPN version was out - no issues at all.

then played the PC version when the US players joined, there were squabbles (usually about whether calling someone a "jap" is offensive or not)

but this - this was just shocking - every so often there would just be more offensive cackle from the Xbox kids.

Seriously, it's like MMORPG torrets.

they may let stuff like this slide in the beta... but if you where to shout shit like that on the public server you would get a nice tour of FF jail.

Elvaan dex is fine. Everyone is about even on dex except mithra. It's their agi that suffers.

DC: that's the XBLive demographic at work...when the game comes out...they'll have to get used to getting temp bans for that shit...at least if they shout or say that

all those biggots are fucking brokeback's anyway

Oh yeah, it was AGI that suffers more. It's usually Elvaan DEX that gets ragged on most of the time (which is still low actually).

A well-known Taru-Taru once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Vanadiel orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called a galaxy.

At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant Crab."

The Taru-Taru gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the Crab standing on?"

"You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's crabs all the way down."

And up.

I am so increadibly addicted to this game... got like 50 hrs in already, and only had the beta since last tuesday... Usually I just fish though, I enjoy making money and hooking up with other people to trade with... I love the Bazaar idea, and the Auction House... It def has a fun economy to it...

I picked up the beta, set everything up... try to play, I need to update. Ok.

Well, at different points in the download of the update (everytime I try) I get an error message about the content server error.

WHY!?!

It DOES support wireless keyboards, not sure if it supports every single one, but i'd guess the majority of newer logitech and microsoft brand ones... I got a cheap-o logitech wireless keyboard/mouse for $60 canadian and it works well, except i notice quite a bit of "key echo"... not sure why that is, but my sentences usually come out "Railgun: annyone ehave a fiishing grod for saleles..."

Yea that's very true. Crafting is immensly fun too but it can end up costing a fortune.

About races and stuff:

I can safely say that no matter what race you pick you will be able to play any job you like. Skill goes quite a long way in this game, and equipment just caps it off. But to be safe I will list some race/job combinations that I strongly advise against, especially for beginner players as they will unlikely have the skill or the equipment needed to warrant such a combination. And you must also remember that some people are Nazis when it comes to picking members. They have no way of assessing how skilled you are until they actually see you in action, and some won't be willing to take that risk. They will choose you only if they are satisfied with your Level, Job and Race (there is more to it than that but these are the only things to worry about early on... say Lv10-30). What I mean is, just for your own benefit, especially if you're a total newcomer, try and avoid these combos:

Galka:
White Mage, Black Mage and Summoner.

Taru Taru:
Paladin.

I'm not saying you cannot do it but it will certainly make it a lot harder meaning less fun overall.

I had a blast with taru paladin. The most amusing thing was being in a party with an elvaan white mage and having more MP than they did (this was in the early 20s). :lol Actually, if you're going to play galka I recommend bard...only because their harps are twice as big as a taru. :)

First off, this game is not ugly... it just looks like a ps2 game... but from what ive seen of other MMOs thats good.

I played for 30 mins maybe, it was laggy... and I go disconnected 2 times... is that normal?

I don't think it's normal, its never happend to me.

Getting gil early on can be a real pain.

It's why I reccomend having a spare character, usually a warrior. Have it in Bastok, and hunt Quads. The more difficult the quad, the more often I get a Quadav shell. I've gone into the area near and into Palborough, come out 4 hours later with a silly amount of them, and shell shields. Great way to make money. Or you could (if you're a mage type) simply switch to WAR and do the same.

Just something I have to do, as a white mage it's incredibly hard for me to keep up with even alot of decent challenge mobs solo, whereas a well prepared WAR can usually take even matchs, or sometimes a tough with careful use of their job ability. Being a white mage is a harsh calling, but a vital part of the community. So we grin and bear it. Besides, who else is gonna revive your party members who got killed when the tank of the party pulls one of those "I'm not going to provoke! if I do, he'll hit me!" moments? (REAL QUOTE...>.> )

BTW, any and all X360 beta users can "purchase" an extra free content ID to make spares with. I enjoy the game, and am glad to be back after a long hiatus, but the fact my character will probaly be wiped winds me and keeps me from going all out. I know, they're saying "We are currently working on a method to get beta characters transferred". But DigitalBackSpin from the xbox.com FF11 forum was in both the PC and PS2 NA beta as well as this one, and they said the same thing in both of those up to the day all the characters were wiped out.

If you have a PC don't get this version please :( It just makes me sick ;(

Huh?

Sometimes I don't feel like sitting in front of my computer to play a game for a long period of time.

If I can sit back on my couch and play FFXI, it's perfect. That's what I liked about the PS2 one. With the X360 looking just like the high-res PC version, I'll definitely be buying it on day one.

Tarus do Paladin fine. The only time you have to worry about a Taru Paladin is when you're fighting mobs like Spiders or Pugils that have one damage single hit attacks. Even then, you can just make sure the Tank has full HP as often as possible. Galka mages would be the combo I would avoid for new players.

The performance is pretty embarrassing so far.. The framerate is unstable and often gets pretty low. This shouldn't be happening with a ps2 port...

Perhaps you're unfamiliar with the game. It's never had what could be called a consistently smooth framerate, and PS2 ports to a more powerful system aren't garunteed to be much better. (MGS2 performed worse on Xbox than PS2) FF11 is going to be played on three platforms, their is only so many improvemnets or changes they could have made to the visuals and keep the experience consistent for all three fanbases. Obviously, if looks are your main concern in a MMO, run away from FF11, it's a port of an aging MMORPG. It isn't going to impress you.
