I was given this thing by a friend, and I'd like to do something with it, but its completely devoid of serial numbers (I opened it up, and lifted out the battery, still nada.) and all it says on it is Visor on it.

Oh yeah, its in Japanese.

So does anyone have any idea how I could get software for this bitch? I hook it up via the USB cable, but all it does is charge.
Help?

It isn't going to detect as an external drive, if that's what you were hoping for. You'll need some sort of sync software. It's a Handspring Visor. Handspring has now merged with Palm and they're called PalmOne.

Learn japaneese - problem solved :)

Funny you should say that.
The Japanese part is actually why it was given to me, but still, sans serial number, I really didn't know where to go from there. Someone was telling me I needed some sort of number in order to use the download software.

Awesome! I found where the serial number should be, but it seems worn off. Super!

Do you actually care about synching to your computer? If not, you could just use the Springboard expansion slot on the back via a flash card adapter to just copy any .PRC files on to the card to download to the Visor.

Hell, you could just have someone with a Palm device beam you the .PRC file as well via the infra red port.

Which would require a flash card adapter, haha.
And I'll be honest, I don't know a damn thing about 'em.

Do you have another palm device? or a friend with one? The easiest way is the IR beam method.

Nah, I don't, which is bunk.
Why would they want the serial # to download the software anyway?

How about I download the damn thing for you and email it to you. What's your OS on your 'puter?

That's pretty awesome of you.
OSX

Email address will be in a PM

Good news, and bad news bud.

Bad news is that Palm desktop version they reccomend that I download is 4.2.1 and the one they reccomend for your Visor Edge is 4.0.

The good news is, if you go to their Palm download instead of Handspring, they are not requiring serial number for the download (at least for Palm 3, which is closest to your Visor as far as specs go). And I don't see any reason why it woudn't work with your Visor.

Try and download the 4.2.1 for the Palm 3 at the same site and see if that works. I'll PM you my serial number for my Pam 3 just in case they were going by the fact that I've already registered my Palm 3 at their site while back.

Installed, connected, and it says not compatible. Hmm. Well thanks anyway, I'll see if I can find a way to get the visor software somehow.

i've got Palm Desktop for Clies (Palm OS4) somewhere around here. As soon as i find the disc, i'll see if it has a Mac OS version and requires a serial number, and host the file. IIRC, it's PC only though.

Doh... somehow i missed that. But yeah, i hate the fact that you simply couldn't download Palm Desktop. i lost my installation CD once and found it out the hard way. They also made Palm OS development more difficult when MS offered a functional version of development tools, for free no less.

i'm awaiting the next version of Palm OS before i jump ship. My current PDA does quite well by me, so i've no need to upgrade, but the power of Windows Mobile PDAs these days along with more PC-compatible software is tempting.

If I didn't have to sink all my extra funds into my ultra uber super duper iPod project, I'd have had the Dell Axim X50V already.

Unless Palm comes out with a VGA screened device before the summer, my NX70 is going to be the last Palm OS device for e while me thinks....

All I got for the Vernal Equinox was this stupid tag
Weird, neither of the two PDAs I have require a serial number of any kind. Both use Palm OS5.

Well, if Palm were even remotely smart, they would have made the Palm Desktop a free download for anyone regardless of they owned a Palm OS device or not, so that people would be more inclined to getting a Palm OS PDA after they've been using this free PIM/calendar/scheduling program on their desktop.

But that's if they wer smart. Clearly, they are far from smart, judging from how they've squandered the years of marketshare lead they've held over other OS PDAs.
